Program Associate (Technical Outreach)
The Center for Internet and Society (CIS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the intersections of technology, policy, and society. Our Access to Knowledge (A2K) program focuses on enhancing access to free knowledge and open content, particularly within the Wikimedia Movement in India. We collaborate with communities, Wikimedians, and organizations to promote knowledge sharing and accessibility.

Position Overview
We are seeking a proactive and technically adept Program Associate (Technical Outreach) to join our A2K team. The Program Associate will play a pivotal role in facilitating technical engagement, providing support, and advancing technological initiatives within the Wikimedia community.
Key Responsibilities
Capacity Building:
- Conduct events to improve the basic technical understanding of Wikimedians and work towards improving the collaboration of Wikimedians contributing to tech and communities working on content.
- Organize workshops, webinars, and training sessions focused on technical skills, tools, and best practices.
- Support the technical skill development of community members, especially those from diverse backgrounds.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with Wikimedians and community members to understand their technical requirements and challenges.
- Facilitate discussions and initiatives that improve technical collaboration and efficiency.
- Identify and promote the use of relevant tools, software, and technologies that enhance Wikimedia contributions.
Reporting and Analytics:
- Monitor and analyze technical trends, data, and metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Provide regular updates on technical outreach initiatives and their impact on the A2K team and stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, etc.).
- Working knowledge of at least one programming language (preferably Python) and technical know-how of how things work. Basic knowledge of SQL is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in Wikimedia projects, tools, and platforms, including but not limited to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. Practical understanding of various aspects of Wikimedia technical spaces and types of tools like user scripts, gadgets, bots, etc.
- 1-2 years of experience with technical training, capacity building, and community engagement is advantageous.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Information:
- This is a full-time remote position.
- Travel will be required for events, workshops, and technical collaboration.
