Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) is inviting applications for a part-time consultant to aid in ongoing research about digital rights. We are looking for applicants with a strong background in litigation and legal advocacy around digital rights, to join as a short-term consultant starting February 2023.

The deadline for applications is 31 January, 2023.

Applications are strongly encouraged from individuals belonging to historically marginalised communities, including caste-oppressed communities, women, LGBTQIA+ people, and people with a disability/disabilities.

Scope of work

The consultant will be collaborating with researchers at CIS towards the completion of ongoing guidebooks on issues of digital rights, including internet shutdowns, content takedown and surveillance. They are expected to provide legal and practical knowledge on  laws and procedures that apply to these issues, and write in an accessible manner about related legal and constitutional questions.

The selected consultant will be expected to incorporate their pre-existing knowledge and  litigation experience (preferably around these issues) in the guidebooks. They will be appropriately attributed for their contribution to this research, both for providing their expertise, as well as for their authorship.

This is a part-time research position (20 hours per week), requiring about a month’s commitment.

We seek applicants who are available to start immediately.


  1. Minimum 2-3 years of experience as a litigating lawyer in courts in India.
  2. Familiarity with aforementioned issues of digital rights.
  3. Strong writing skills, and ability to produce accessible research for a variety of audiences.

Remote Work

CIS has transitioned into a ‘remote-first’ workplace. While we are flexible about the consultant’s location, they are expected to be available over calls for regular check-ins and discussions. The option to work out of CIS’ Bengaluru office is available to them as well.


A gross figure of INR 25,000-30,000 is available for the position.

Please note that we are able to make payments to the consultant’s Indian bank account only.

A payment schedule will be finalised with the consultant after their selection.
