Centre for Internet & Society

The Board of the Centre for Internet and Society is looking for a new Executive Director to lead the organisation in its mission to generate cutting-edge policy and academic research on digital transitions and their multivalent impact on individuals, society and governance institutions.

The Board has constituted a search committee for this purpose. As a part of this process, the search committee is issuing this open call for applications for this post. The search committee may also identify suitable persons who may not have formally responded to this call. The decision of the Board will be final in this regard.

About the role

The Executive Director reports to the CIS Board and works under its oversight. The candidate will lead a team of about 70 professionals, and will be responsible for the overall functioning of the organisation, including administration, regulatory compliances, enabling and diversifying research output, and maintaining institutional communication with all stakeholders.

The role includes (but is not limited to):

  • Domestic and international fundraising and managing grant life cycles
  • Facilitating research delivery and strategically identifying emerging areas
  • Strengthening team capabilities in all aspects of the organisation’s mission and collaboratively developing the necessary organisational policies and culture
  • Overseeing statutory compliances and building institutional capacity for this
  • Developing effective strategies to creatively disseminate CIS’s research
  • Participating in Board functions and collaboratively strengthening CIS Society

What we are looking for

  • Applicants must have a post graduate degree or its equivalent in areas central to CIS's research portfolio
  • At least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role in the domain of Internet policy, regulation, and governance
  • Evidence of fundraising, strategic planning, and program delivery in non-profit, academic, trade body, or donor settings
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a plurality of stakeholders including government, grassroots actors, academic institutions, industry associations, etc.
  • Strong grasp of values and governance typifying the non-profit sector in India
  • Commitment to transparent, accountable, and participatory institutional processes
  • Demonstrable evidence of alignment with CIS’s mission and social justice agendas
  • Effective communication skills including strong public speaking and writing abilities in English


  • Strong research and publication competence, and public outreach history
  • Familiarity with and prior experience in CIS's research areas or allied streams
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (as and when it is safe to travel again)



While CIS has been functioning in recent years as a remote-first organisation, the Executive Director is required to be based in India, preferably in Delhi NCR or Bangalore.
