&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Internet browsing histories are dangerous things. One of the reasons why I would not want mine made public is because it will expose the part of my surfing that I am the most ashamed of — click-bait quizzes. No matter how frivolous the quiz might be, I can’t resist taking it. From which Hogwarts House I belong to (Hufflepuff all the way) to which Hollywood celebrity I look like (the last result was Matt Damon! Go figure); from how many books I can name by their first lines (92 on a score of 100) to how many words I can spell correctly (always a 100 per cent). While I know that most of these are completely pointless and a huge distraction from watching videos of hamsters eating carrots and goats butting people, I am a complete sucker for these quizzes. I even have an entire anonymous social media account just to take and share these endless no-sense time-sinks that populate the social web.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;span&gt;Recently, while succumbing to the late-night temptation of answering questions on one of these “tests” that challenged me to identify the correct spelling of the most commonly misspelled words, I erred. I am embarrassed (that was one of the word) that I am always a little confused when it comes to the word “accommodate” — I can never remember if the number of “c”s and “m”s are the same in the spelling and I made the wrong choice. I knew it, in a split second after choosing the option, that I was wrong. However, like the boy scout that I am, I decided to just continue with the test rather than re-doing it, and be content with a less than perfect score.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;So imagine my surprise, when I got the final results. The test declared I was the next of kin to Shakespeare (which is weird, because he was such an atrocious speller) and that I had a 100 per cent accurate result. The analysis sang paeans (see, I can spell that without a spell-checker!) to my prowess at spelling and how, when it comes to the English language, I am nothing short of a savant. But I knew I had made a mistake, and so I decided to take the test again. This time, I deliberately made more than one mistake, carefully choosing wrong spellings for different words. Lo and behold, my final analysis still announced me as the peer of Shashi Tharoor, with the capacity to confound the Tweetosphere with my verbiage.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The pronouncements of my spelling skills had nothing to do with my ability. No matter how many times you took the quiz — with varying degrees of error — like a doting mother, it insisted that you are the best. Quizzes like these, which pretend to test and give an insight into our own capacities, are the new click bait. These quizzes have nothing to do with content or our skills. They have a simple function: they want us to feel validated so that we share the results as a humble brag with others in our social networks, catalysing an avalanche of people who would perpetuate the cycle. In this indiscreet sharing, these quizzes collect valuable data without our consent.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;It is impossible to take such quizzes without signing in through our existing social media accounts and giving access to data that we would otherwise never think of giving to complete strangers promising to tell us our fake futures. These quizzes have identified that the biggest currency of the digital web is personal data, which, then, gets collected, collated, correlated and circulated to other actors who capitalise on it. This is the promise and threat of the big data industries that we live in. I do not want to add to the fear-mongering that often surrounds data theft — if data is the currency, then it is obvious that we are going to have to trade it, guard it, and save it, just the way we do our other currencies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;What I do want to point out is, that if there was a quiz, an app, a programme or a device, which asked to access our bank accounts in order to tell us that we are geniuses, we would be very suspicious of them. Remember, we are still hesitant to even giving our credit card details to websites (you know the premium platforms I am talking about) that have questionable content. We do not easily part with our passwords and keys to Artificial Intelligence scripts masquerading as fake prophets. Similarly, we need to give equal attention to the personal data sets that we give away to seemingly harmless things like quizzes and apps. Indeed, it is fun to indulge in this world of self-congratulatory feedback loops, but it is also good to pay some thought to the cost of this fun. Because when it comes to the world of data driven digitality, the axiom is really simple: if you are having fun for free, you are paying in ways that you cannot see. Often, it is through your personal data and private information.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p id="_mcePaste" style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As you stare at the mass of hashtags, I want you to play a little game with me. These are all hashtags associated with social movements, political protests, cultural phenomena and individual impulses that have marked 2017. Over this year, I have written about these. Most of these events were discussed a lot and they must have come to your attention in our viral webs. I want you to look at each of these hashtags and try to remember what events and circumstances, concerns and questions, alarms and crises were associated with them.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;div style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;span&gt;I must confess that I only have faint memories of some of these events and a complete blank spot on the specificities of a few. At the time of writing, these were questions that were urgent, critical, and all-consuming. And yet, in the brief span of a few months, they have receded from my memory. The only reason I was able to list all these topics was not because I remembered them, but because they were stored and archived in the digital web, and I was able to pull them out through a search query.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;div style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div style="text-align: justify; "&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This relationship between memory and storage is both intriguing and alarming. One of the joys of being human is to be able to forget. One of our strongest coping mechanisms is our capacity to make things fade in memories, so that we can live without being trapped in our pasts. The ability to forget also allows us to forgive and to move on, focusing on corrections rather than mistakes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, when it comes to the digital, memory and storage are the same thing. Human memory falters. But digital storage, outside of a system crash or a black-out is always there, and ready to be converted into memory at the click of a search button. This infinite storage produces a new crisis for us in our digitally mediated lives. It means that even when we forget and depend on our social networks forgetting, the algorithmic databases of storage will not forget our actions and reactions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now, we also train ourselves to forget because we are assured that these new artificial memories will retain the information longer. As we rely on algorithmic prompts to remind us of things from our past, we lose our capacity to remain engaged and committed to different questions and ideas that are important to us. This reliance on digital storage rather than human memory enables a culture of fragmented and multitasking politics, where we pay momentary attention to the hashtag of the day and forget it quickly as new things grab our attention.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;It poses crucial questions to our ways of thinking about social collectives: Who are we when our machines remember what we have forgotten? What happens when somebody animates forgotten memories through querying digital storage? How do we ensure that the prompts for the new do not draw us away from remembering things that are critical? Human civilisations have depended on cultures of memory making. All our cultural products — even the pictures of dancing babies and cute cats — are indeed ways by which we create collective memories of who we are and who we want to be. However, we are increasingly living in times where our capacity to forget is superseded by our machines of storage. We need to find new ways of figuring out how we can remember things that need longer memory, and how we can be forgotten from actions which need to be un-stored.&lt;/div&gt;

    <title>I Just Pinged to Say Hello</title>

        &lt;b&gt;A host of social networks find us more connected than ever before, but leave us groping for words in the digital space.&lt;/b&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I am making a list of all the platforms that I use to connect with the large networks that I belong to. Here goes: I use Yahoo! Messenger to talk to my friends in east Asia. Most of my work meetings happen on Skype and Google Hangout. A lot of friendly chatter fills up my Facebook Messenger. Twitter is always available for a little back-chat and bitching. On the phone, I use Viber to make VoIP calls and WhatsApp is the space for unending conversations spread across days. And these are just the spaces for real-time conversation. Across all these platforms, something strange is happening. As I stay connected all the time, I am facing a phenomenon where we have run out of things to say, but not the desire to talk.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I had these three conversations today on three different instant-messaging platforms:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Person 1 (on WhatsApp): Hi.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Hey, good to hear from you. How are you doing?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 1: Good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me (after considerable silence): So what's up?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 1: Nothing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;End of conversation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 2 (On an incoming video call on Skype): Hey, you there?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Yeah. What time is it for you right now?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 2: It is 10 at night.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Oh! That is late. How come you are calling me so late?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 2: Oh, I saw you online.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Ok….. *eyes raised in question mark*&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 2: So, that's it. I am going to sleep soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Ok…. Er…goodnight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person2: Goodnight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We hang up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 3 (pinging me on Facebook): Hey, you are in the US right now?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Yes. I am attending a conference here.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 3: Cool!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Me: Umm… yeah, it is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Person 3: emoticon of a Facebook 'like'. Have fun. Bye.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Initially I was irritated at the futility of these pings that are bewildering in their lack of content. I dismissed it as one of those things, but I realise that there is a pattern here. Our lives are so particularly open and documented, such minute details of what we do, where we are and who we are with, is now available for the rest of the world to consume, making most of the conversations seeking information, redundant. If you know me on my social media networks, you already know most of the basic things that you would want to know about me. And it goes without saying that no matter how close and connected we are, we are not necessarily in a state where we want to talk all the time. The more distributed our lives are, the more diminished is the need for personal communication.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;And yet, the habit or the urge to ping, buzz, DM or chat has not caught up with this interaction deficit. So, we still seem to reach out, using a variety of platforms just to say hello, even when there is nothing to say. I call this the 'Always On' syndrome. We live in a world where being online all the time has become a ubiquitous reality. Even when we are asleep, or busy in a meeting, or just mentally disconnected from the online spaces, our avatars are still awake. They interact with others. And when they feel too lonely, they reach out and send that empty ping — just to confirm that they are not alone. That on the other side of the glowing screen is somebody else who is going to connect back, and to reassure you that we are all together in this state of being alone.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This empty ping has now become a signifier, loaded with meaning. The need for human connection has been distributed, but it does not compensate our need for one-on-one contact. In the early days of the cell phone, when incoming calls were still being charged, the missed call, without any content, was a code between friends and lovers. It had messages about where to meet, when to meet, or sometimes, just that you were missing somebody. The empty ping is the latest avatar of the missed call — in a world where we are always online but not always connected, when we are constantly together, but also spatially and emotionally alone, the ping remains that human touch in the digital space that reassures us that on the other side of that seductive interface and the buzzing gadget, is somebody we can say hello to.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt; &lt;/p&gt;

        &lt;b&gt;The end of the year is supposed to be a happy, feel-good space for families, friends, societies and communities to come together and count our blessings. It is the time to look at things that have gone by and look forward to what the New Year will bring.&lt;/b&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;And yet, when I started writing this piece, my horizons seemed to be eclipsed by the amount of violence we have witnessed in the last year, and the inability of our governance systems to deal with them.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Around this time last year, the nation had woken up to the horrors a young woman suffered as a group of men raped her in a moving bus in Delhi. The inhumanity of the crime, her tragic death, and the fact that despite our collective anger and grief, the year has been dotted with violence of a gendered and sexual nature, should be enough to quell any celebrations. What happened to her and then to many other reported and invisible survivors of sexual violence in the country has seen a dramatic transformation of the digital public sphere.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Spurred by anger, frustration and the realisation that we are often the agents of change, people have taken to the streets and the information highway in unprecedented forms. Every reported incident of sexual violence — from the young intern who was molested by a former Supreme Court judge to the now infamous Tehelka case — sparked great ire on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and collaborative user-generated content sites. Hashtags have trended, videos have gone viral. Men and women have bonded together to speak against the increasingly unsafe spaces we seem to inhabit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Responding to this public demonstration and outrage, we have seen some positive developments from the governments and judiciary systems which are morally, legally and constitutionally bound to look after us. And yet, we are quickly realising that much of this is not enough. While the law takes its course and tries to craft and enforce more efficient regulation to prevent and protect victims of such violent crimes, we have despaired at how it doesn't seem to change things materially.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The digital spaces that we have used to fight, to protest and to call for action, are also where we have shared the frustration at how little material reality has changed. Hashtags on Twitter have gone through life cycles of anger, protest and despair, as the complex structures of archaic laws, slow judiciary processes, prejudiced judges, and a populist politics which is often superficial, take their toll on processes to establish justice, equality and freedom for our societies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;As tweets and Facebook updates have now clearly told us, through testimonies and witness accounts, these questions cannot be understood in isolation. The social media has consistently reminded us that the December 16 gang rape was not just about one woman. It was about the misogynist societies that we are constructing and the fundamental flaws in systems which encourage the idea that men have ownership of the bodies and lives of women in our country. Across the year, through campaigns by online intervention groups like the Blank Noise Project or through note-card viral memes like "I need feminism" have emphasised the need to acknowledge these not as "women's problems" or "exceptional" problems. These are problems that need to be understood in the larger context of human rights, and our rights to life, dignity, equality and freedom enshrined in our Constitution.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;And yet, as another year comes to an end, the social media is ablaze at a decision that has marked one of the darkest days in recent judicial history. On December 11, the Supreme Court of India repealed the landmark historical judgement issued by the Delhi High Court that read down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalises same-sex relationships. Finding this in defiance of our constitutional rights, the well-weighed judgment was celebrated across social media — nationally and globally — for its recognition that the problem of discrimination is never just about one demography or section of the society. As the LGBTQ communities stood in shock, there was something else that happened on social media.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;For once, the comments of disbelief, anger and surprise turned into a roar for correcting such a verdict. And it is not only the LGBTQ identified people and activists who are joining this clamour. Straight people, people with families, families with LGBTQ children, are all coming out and finding a common bond of solidarity that works around hashtags and viral sharing of messages. The world of social media has shown how we have learned, that we cannot leave the underprivileged to fight for themselves. Because, if we ignore the discrimination against them, we will have nobody to support us when we are being treated as sub-human and irrelevant in a country that has often done poetic interpretations of what constitutional rights mean.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;I started writing this piece with despair. But I slowly realise that maybe there is something to be thankful about this year. That even when our archaic systems of justice are catching up with the accelerated transformations in our lives, the social media does act as a public space where those bound together in their belief for equality and justice can act in solidarity. On Twitter, this fateful day, everybody was queer. And they did not have to identify themselves as men or women, straight, gay or lesbian. Despite our bodies, our differences, our status and practices, we can claim to fight for those whose voices, bodies, lives and loves are being negated in our country. And if you cannot take to the streets to make your support felt, remember that the digital public sphere is active and buzzing. Those in power have no choice but to take into account the collective voice on the internet, which demands and shall build open, fair and equal societies.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Back When the Past had a Future: Being Precarious in a Network Society</title>

        &lt;b&gt;We live in Network Societies. This phrase has been so bastardised to refer to the new information turn mediated by digital technologies, that we have stopped paying attention to what the Network has become. Networks are everywhere. They have become the default metaphor of our times, where everything from infrastructure assemblies to collectives of people, are all described through the lens of a network.&lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This article by Nishant Shah was published in a peer-reviewed newspaper &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://www.aprja.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/researching_bwpwap_large.pdf"&gt;Researching BWPWAP&lt;/a&gt;. The write-up is on Page 3.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;We are no longer just human beings living in socially connected, politically identified communities. Instead, we have become actors, creating archives of traces and transactions, generating traffic and working as connectors in the ever expanding fold of the network.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The network is an opaque metaphor, conflating description and explanation. So it becomes the object to be studied, the originary context that produces itself, and the explanatory framework that accounts for itself. In other words, the network was our past – it gives us an account of who we were, it is our present – it defines the context of all our activities, and it is our future – where we do everything to support the network because it is the only future that we can imagine for ourselves. It is this flattening characteristic of networks that are diagrammatically mapped, cartographically reproduced, and presented outside of and oblivious to temporality, that produces a condition of the future that can no longer be imagined through our everyday lives.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Networks neither promise nor deliver a flattened utopia of coexistence and decentralised power. Networks are, in fact, quite aware of the structures of inequity and conditions of privilege they create and perpetuate: the only way to recognise the existence of a network is to be outside of it, the only aspiration to belong to a network is to be kept outside of it when you recognise it. Networks create themselves as simultaneously ubiquitous and scarce, of everpresent and ephemeral, creating a new ontology for our being human – an ontology of precariousness, contingent upon erasure of our histories, archives of our present, and unimaginable futures; futures we are not ready for, and don’t have strategies to occupy.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I remember the times, before networks became the default conditions of being human, when kids, negotiating the variegated temporalities of their past-present-futures, would often begin their speculations on future, by saying, "When I grow up...". In that hope of growing up, was the potential for radical political action, the possibility of social reconstruction. In network societies, though, time has no currency. It has been replaced by attentions, flows of information and actions, and do not offer a tomorrow to grow into.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;There is no future to help mitigate the exigencies of the present. And with the overwhelming emphasis on archiving the present, there is no more a coherent future that can be accounted for in the vocabulary that the network develops to explain itself, and the hypothetical world outside it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Through  a series of workshops, art residences, and dialogues, Habits of  Living  seeks to change the focus of network analyses away from  catastrophic  events or their possibility towards generative habitual  actions that  negotiate and transform the constant stream of information  to which we  are exposed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Conference: Habits of Living&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This  international conference will bring together prominent and innovative  scholars and artists at Brown University. There will be ninety-minute  panels (each with two speakers), a keynote address by the RAQs Media  Collective, a series of concurrent "unconferences" (informal sessions to  be run by the audience), a scrapyard challenge, and an exhibition of  work running in parallel. Speakers include Ariella Azoulay, Elizabeth  Bernstein, Biella Coleman, Didier Fassin, Kara Keeling, Laura Kurgan,  Ganaelle Langlois, Colin Milburn, Nicholas Mirzoeff, Elias Muhanna, Lisa  Parks, Raqs Media Collective, Nishant Shah, Ravi Sundarum, Tiziana  Terranova, and Nigel Thrift.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This  event is designed as a large public conference whose major segments are  participant-driven "unconferences." Unconferences are fluid events of  casual five-minute "lightning" presentations and informal dialogue  generated through group interactions. To facilitate discussion around  networked societies, the multiple unconference sessions will focus  around topics generated in advance by all the participants in the  audience who will be guided through a quick and easy sign-up process.  The unconferences are meant to take a more improvisational form, so the  themes and locations will remain flexible, and entirely driven by  audience participation.&lt;/p&gt;

His work and thesis is titled "Deconstructing Networks" and  includes over 77 creative projects that critically challenge and subvert  accepted perceptions of network interaction and experience. Her book, &lt;i&gt;The Witch's Flight: The Cinematic, the Black Femme, and the Image of Common Sense&lt;/i&gt;,  explores the role of cinematic images in the construction and  maintenance of hegemonic conceptions of the world and interrogates the  complex relationships between cinematic visibility, minority politics,  and the labor required to create and maintain alternative organizations  of social life.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Keeling is author of several articles published in anthologies and  journals and co-editor (with Colin MacCabe and Cornel West) of a  selection of writings by the late James A Snead entitled &lt;i&gt;European Pedigrees/ African Contagions: Racist Traces and Other Writing&lt;/i&gt; and (with Josh Kun) of a collection of essays about sound in American Studies entitled &lt;i&gt;Sound Clash: Listening to American Studies&lt;/i&gt;. Currently, Keeling is writing her second monograph, tentatively entitled &lt;i&gt;Queer Times, Black Futures&lt;/i&gt; and co-editing (with Thenmozhi Soundarajan) a collaborative multi-media  archive and scholarship project focused on the work of Third World  Majority, one of the first women of color media justice collectives in  the United States, entitled "From Third Cinema to Media Justice: Third  World Majority and the Promise of Third Cinema".&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Prior to joining the faculty at USC, Keeling was an Assistant  Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of North  Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and was an adjunct assistant Professor of  Women's Studies at Duke University, and a visiting assistant professor  of Art and Africana Studies at Williams College. First, I have been working on the genealogy of visuality, a key term in the field. Far from being a postmodern theory word, it was created to describe how Napoleonic era generals "visualized" a battlefield that they could not see. Applied to the social as a whole by Thomas Carlyle, visuality was a conservative strategy to oppose all emancipations and liberations in the name of the autocratic hero.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;My book &lt;i&gt;The Right to Look: A Counterhistory of Visuality&lt;/i&gt; was published by Duke University Press (2011).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Second, I produce texts and projects that support the general  development of visual culture as a field of study and a methodology. Ravi Sundaram’s work rests at the intersection of the post-colonial city  and contemporary media experiences. As media technology and urban life  have intermingled in the post-colonial world, new challenges have  emerged for contemporary cultural theory. Sundaram has looked at the  phenomenon that he calls ‘pirate modernity’, an illicit form of urbanism  that draws from media and technological infrastructures of the  post-colonial city.
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sundaram’s essays have been translated into various languages in  India, Asia, and Europe. His current research deals with urban fear  after media modernity, where he looks at the worlds of image circulation  after the mobile phone, ideas of transparency and secrecy, and the  media event.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Taking Care of Things: Reclaiming What is Lost in Our Defence of Humanities&lt;/b&gt;&lt;a href="#fn1" name="fr1"&gt;[1]&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this were a book, this section would be the preface. If it were an academic paper, a footnote. If an art piece, a curator’s note. But, in this mixed multi-media semi-strange space of the research blog, this is just the space where I tell you what is going to follow. And perhaps, explain (though not to justify) why I need to tell you what is going to follow. For a while now, I have been trying to work through some of the questions that have emerged around (and sometimes, because of) digital humanities as a concept and as a practice. A lot of my thought has been about addressing the concerns around infrastructure, human skill, resources, pedagogy and the need to disprivilege the digital as the only point of focus in a majority of the discourse.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As I write about these questions in the different spaces that I write in, I’m trying to take the formulation of digital humanities as a history-in-making where we might still be able to salvage the humanities from being soft-skills and our pedagogies from becoming reduced to MOOCs. In doing so, I started experiencing a strange discomfort with my own writing. This is not new. Every time I glance retrospectively at my older writing, I cringe, and despair and work hard at resisting the impulse to apologise to my readers. It could have been better, sharper, more precise.&lt;a href="#fn2" name="fr2"&gt;[2]&lt;/a&gt;But, the discomfort that I am experiencing now, looking at the last couple of years of writing about digital humanities, is different. It is a discomfort that emerges from the fact that in trying to defend and protect the domain of the humanities, the register of my writing has changed considerably.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I try to be accessible and write in prosaic forms that are easily understood and not prone to ambiguity. I try to talk to multiple stakeholders, especially those who are ringing the death knell of traditional humanities, speaking in a language of relevance, significance, impact and efficacy. I try to build infrastructure, engaging with funding agencies, carefully extrapolating the ideas of pilot innovations, mainscaling, upstreaming and integrating everyday practices.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In all these attempts, which have been successful in varying degrees, I have let go of the very things that my English literature and humanities training had equipped me to do — to write with passion, to explore the creativity of linguistic and textual expression, to mix form, function and format to generate new relationships between disparate objects that might have otherwise been kept in their self-contained silos — and to pursue, not through empirical evidence, but through creative association, through cross-cultural and inter-textual referencing, a persuasive politics of passionate dialogue. Or, to not make such a song and dance (and a possible meme) out of it, I am slowly realising that very few of us, doing digital humanities, are exploring the very tools that humanities studies have offered us, to question and contest the status quo so that we can envision and dream alternate realities and futures.&lt;a href="#fn3" name="fr3"&gt;[3]&lt;/a&gt; So caught have we been, trying to defend our craft (and sometimes the art) that we have started speaking in the language of those who question, rather than strengthening the voices we already have.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;So, I write today (see, I told you, we would need an explanation), as an experiment, in a language and style that I have forced myself to forget, in a way that I don’t even remember that it is forgotten. I write about three things – archives, life-cycles, and habits — in order to look at the complex and complicated relationships that we have presumed and established in the practices of digital humanities. I write to question our human-centric approach, where we think about things, but we only think of them from our human perspectives. I write to imagine, nay, to persuade you to imagine, what it would be like to think of things as things, dislodged from our human positions and dreaming cyborg dreams. I write, to explore, what it means in our DH concerns, to take care of things as things, and not as the separate, the other, the human.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Taking Care of Things: The Beginning&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Welcome, human beings, cyborgs, and things, to this blog post&lt;a href="#fn4" name="fr4"&gt;[4] &lt;/a&gt;It has been designed, by a few human beings, by a few machines, and a few things in-between. Here, I lay the ground and lead you into the fine practice of taking care of things. But this task produces in me a strange existential anxiety. I try to figure out what role I play in introducing something as common place, quotidian and everything as taking care of things.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Should I be like the head of an organised crime unit, who, for a price, shall take care of things that bother you by destroying them, silencing them, or making them invisible? Maybe I channel the energies of a grandmother, looking down the family tree of resemblances, giving out instructions on how to take care of the legacies and heirlooms, of the epilepsies in blood, that we shall pass from generation to generation. Should I be a historian who identifies patterns in the order of things, giving you hints at how we need to take care of things past and things to come so that we can live with things as they are? Or, how about a witness, blindfolded in my ignorance, a heathen in his blindness, describing to you the wonders of an elephant that looks like a pillar, a rope, a pan and a sword, trying to preserve what I remember, always knowing, always despairing that what I recall is smaller than what I remember, what I remember is smaller than what I know, what I know is smaller than what is, and what is, is both inscrutable and ineffable by the mere human?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As I negotiate with these fractured, fragmented, frail and failed attempts at trying to care for you, care for ideas, care enough to transmit thoughts via words into your receptive selves, I realise that it is a futile attempt. Even if I were to enter that state of information nirvana, where what I think translates into words, pristine, pure, uncontaminated by powers of interpretation and untouched by the fallacy of meaning, you still would be unable to process it. Everything that I say will only be misunderstood by you. And, I shall misread your misunderstanding. And, together we shall fake it, like orgasms on a surreptitious one-night stand, in the quest of making meaning. In other words, I lament that we are not machines. That we are not things. It is only in the machinistic, especially in the digital machines of computing, that these seamless flows of information are possible. Garbage in, garbage out. What you see is what you get. Does exactly what it says on the tin. All your base are belong to us.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;And so, welcome, once again human beings, cyborgs, things to this piece of text that I hope turns out to be fantastic, terrific, awesome. Fantastic because it invites you to enter realms of fantasy. Terrific because it leads us into things that terrify us. To this awesome evening. Awesome because it silences us into awe. Welcome, to this text, which is a safe space — look, you can ride on the hyphen, or drop between the white spaces of words. It is a safe space where we think, not of things, but as things. That is the only way out of the quandary into which I have trapped myself.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Taking Care of Things&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;It is humanly impossible to do so. And it is in thinking of taking care as a human function, that we face bewilderment and anxiety. If we pretend, for the space of this text&lt;a href="#fn5" name="fr5"&gt;[5]&lt;/a&gt; to be things — immortal but destructible, without agency but with design, bereft of intention but with defined purpose, devoid of ambiguity but prone to abuse — and try and make sense of the three things that we shall return to, recursively, obsessively, desperately, in the next three days, then we might be on to something.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As things, we look at archives. The repository of things. An indexicality of things that are present. A glaring array of things that are absent. The archive has been imagined in the service of the human, at the desire of the human, and the curatorial logics of collective human experience too long. Let us think of not only an archive of things, but an archive that follows the internal logics and logistics of things. An archive that is constructed by things, which might sometimes give us human access and interface to things within it. Archives, which might use human powers — biological, organic, intellectual, affective — to organise themselves, to fuel their constant expansion and arrangement. Archives as a purpose for human existence. Archives as the alien space jelly that feeds on the human in order to survive, so that it can sustain the order and power of the things that reside within it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In a world where the human has already conceded its right to memory — memory is a stick, it is a promiscuous, adulterous, plug and play flash drive, that romances, serenades and has infectious relationships with different machines… in such a world, it should be easy to imagine that the human, at least when it comes to informational realities, is secondary, if not insignificant. The human, prone to decay and death, attacked by biological malware that erodes its internal functions, disabling its programmes and often short-circuiting its motherboard, is fragile and surely the most unstable form of storing something as beautiful and terrifying as information.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;We live too fast, die too soon, and in the process, constantly destroy the meaningless but necessary flow and circulation of information. And, so, we need to think of life-cycles differently. The things that we live with, generally outlive our carbon based biological bodies. We pass on, through genetic mutation, our eyes, our knobby knees and our genetic predisposition to chocolate to the subsequent generations. But, we also pass on our assets, our properties, our passwords and datasets. And maybe, given that the data outlives us, data is seemingly immortal, data registers our death and continues in its divine existence, we need to restructure our idea of who lives, who dies, and what constitutes a life-cycle.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Hence, I beseech you, to let go of your humanity. This stubborn sticking to the idea of being human, is merely a habit. It is taught. It is a form of co-option. Remember those days, when you were still not sure about being human. The day, when you were told that when you grow up, you can become anything you want — the disappointment of realising that it was a lie… that you wanted to be a dog, but you were trapped and coerced into becoming a human. Let go of the idea that being human has anything exceptional to it. We love. We care. We kill. Well, guess what?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Things Care&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;Things love. Oh, they love. Selfishly, destructively, intensely. Things love us and they demand our attention, time and intimacy, slowly enveloping us in soft glows, gently vibrating in our pockets, sensually slithering in our hands. And everybody knows what happens to a machine that you pour a cup of coffee on — like a disappointed lover, Romeo to his Juliet poisoning himself to death, like Medea on a revenge spree eating her own children, the machine, when neglected, dies.&lt;b&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Things care. But we are mistaken in thinking that they care for us. Things care for themselves. &lt;a href="http://www.plecebo.org/2009/01/kelly-dobson-and-robots.html"&gt;Things take care of each other.&lt;/a&gt; When you and I are asleep, your refrigerator connects to your microwave, speaking through the analogue networks, resonating in electromagnetic frequencies. And things kill.  Slowly, gently, hypnotically, they wait, they watch, and when we are not looking, they stab, they sting, they betray and remind us that the human is futile.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;To take care of things as human beings is then an exercise in wasted effort. Because we shall always be addressing things from a condition of inadequacy and wastefulness, well aware that the thing that we are talking to, talking about, talking through, is more precise, more fulfilled, more in control of its intentions and more aware of its destiny than we are ever going to be. Maybe in order to take care of things, we need to think of ourselves as things. Things that talk to things. Things that take care of things. That will be a world of new equalities. A world, where we can stop living in fear of the other — the thing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Where Everything is a Thing&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A thing is in everything.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;

How dare it tell me how I should write?&lt;/p&gt;

I have to give a special shout out to &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanna_Drucker"&gt;Johanna Drucker&lt;/a&gt; whose  resolute mixing of the styles and genres, writing as a digital humanist  while writing about digital humanities has been truly inspiring.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Digital Native: Double Speak</title>

        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The article was published in &lt;a class="external-link" href="https://indianexpress.com/article/express-sunday-eye/digital-native-aadhaar-double-speak-5300540/"&gt;Indian Express&lt;/a&gt; on August 12, 2018.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr style="text-align: justify; " /&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This has been a month of Twitter drama. In the latest episode,  Twitter exploded once again with RS Sharma, the chief of the Telecom  Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Sharma revealed his &lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/what-is/what-is-aadhaar-card-and-where-is-it-mandatory-4587547/"&gt;Aadhaar&lt;/a&gt; number on Twitter and challenged the world (#facepalm) to do their  worst. The Twitterati moved quickly and decided to go 50 Shades of Grey  on Sharma.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In less than 24 hours, French security researcher Elliot Alderson,  who has been systematically showing vulnerabilities in Aadhaar’s  technical infrastructure, fished out Sharma’s personal address, birth  date, email, alternate phone number, and PAN number. A few other ethical  hackers got hold of his bank account details and used &lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/paytm/"&gt;Paytm&lt;/a&gt; apps to transfer money to one of his bank accounts. Sharma made a  grandstand of how this information is not “state secret” and that this  was already peppered across the internet for anybody to find. The UIDAI,  while calling his tactics a cheap hack, announced that the Aadhaar  database was not “hacked” to retrieve this information and that our  precious private data is safe in those hands.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;What remains really bizarre, in both the responses from Sharma and  the UIDAI, however, is their willing blindness to what networked  information systems do and look like. There are three main points to  consider here. Sharma, marked by privilege, protected by power, and  confident in his ability to protect himself in case of threat, might  dismiss this private information as non-critical. However, what he fails  to realise is that the same data, for somebody in a precarious  condition might be sensitive enough to have their life collapse on them.  On the nefarious digital worlds of the Indian web, where women are  regularly threatened with rape and death as a form of silencing them,  where queer people are stalked and followed in real life for blackmail  and abuse, where resistant actors find their families threatened, this  information in the public domain could literally be a matter of life and  death. In the past, with much less information available, we have seen  how specific communities could be targeted in times of communal tension  and violence. The fact that the head of TRAI cannot look beyond his  gilded privilege to the conditions of precariousness that data leaks  like these could lead to is shameful.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Perhaps, even more alarming is the UIDAI’s consistent myopic focus on  what constitutes safe data. While I have no doubt that the incredible  engineers and security experts are working hard to keep the Aadhaar data  secure, the Twitter ethical hackers were not making claims of hacking a  database at all. They were merely demonstrating why centralised unique  ids, which perform acts of causative correlation, have the capacity to  build surveillance states without even meaning to. Their data exposure  is indicative of the fact that while Aadhaar itself does not carry much  information, the linkages it makes with multiple other databases — tax  offices, bank accounts, public services, emails, phone numbers, etc. —  can expose information profiles without our consent. In fact, the danger  of Aadhaar has never been that as a technical system it doesn’t work.  The threat that it posits is that as a social and a cultural transaction  system it opens up individuals to high levels of precariousness without  building privacy safeguards for those who might fall through the  cracks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;What remains the most disappointing in this entire piece of melodrama  is that the conversations keep on unfolding at two different registers.  The Aadhaar activists have been asking not for a dismantling of the  system but to build ethical, compassionate, flexible and constitutional  checks and balances at the core of the system. Ever since its inception,  the demand has been clear: build privacy, security, safety, and human  care into the DNA of the system, and not in its afterthought. The UIDAI  has persistently neglected and willfully dismissed these demands, thus  privileging the security of their infrastructure and data over the  safety of their citizens.&lt;/p&gt;
        &lt;p&gt;

    <title>Digital Native: #MemeToo</title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Memes, like regrettable exes, have the habit of resurfacing at  regular periods. This week saw the return of the “Qajar Princess” meme  across social media and institutional news media outlets as well. For  those late to the viral party, Princess Qajar first made its appearance  towards the end of 2017, when the world was riding high on its  pop-feminist assertions and the revelations of the #MeToo movements — a  photograph of a person dressed in a gown with dark long hair, thick  eyebrows and a moustache, as she gets her portrait shot. The caption  identified this person as Princess Qajar who was a “symbol of beauty in  Persia” (now Iran), and also stated how “13 young men killed themselves”  because she rejected their advances.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Everything about the meme was click-bait worthy — from the defiance  of feminine standards to the possibility of a woman scripting her own  narrative of beauty and empowerment. It fed perfectly into our female  emancipation narratives.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;There was only one problem with this meme — it was completely made  up. There was quick debunking of all its claims. Excellent websites like  Abitofhistory and many investigators on Reddit showed that everything  about the meme was a fabrication. While it did seem to respond to the  political zeitgeist and celebrate women’s bodies and desire — also  giving us a non-Western narrative of beauty — it was all just #FakeNews.  The meme had more or less died its timely death by the time 2018 rolled  in, but, surprisingly, it has come back again on Instagram and &lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/facebook/"&gt;Facebook&lt;/a&gt; news where equal parts admiration and ridicule are expressed at the cost of the person in that image.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;ins&gt;&lt;/ins&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The meme does not have any immediate problematic actions associated  with it, though it carries both the oriental prejudices of framing the  Persian region as “freaky”, and the misogynist framing of a woman’s body  as something that is available for shameless analysing and commenting.  This obvious piece of disinformation does belie the volatile nature of  news and information circulation that we live in, in the age of  information overload. I was in Jakarta in late August, sitting with 30  news media professionals, information activists, and policy actors from  Asia, where we were discussing the surfeit of such disinformation, and  our apparent incapacity to engage with it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As we went through various workshops and talks curated by the Digital  Asia Hub, one thing was increasingly becoming clear. People do not have  a rational relationship with information. In fact, historically, the  regulation of news media has been focused on how to create a rational,  evidence-based narrative so that information consumers can be trained  into developing a rational relationship with the information that comes  to them. However, as information production and consumption patterns  change, with the proliferation of new info sources and authorship, these  old regulations are collapsing. We have tried very hard, even in  artistic platforms like cinema, to distinguish between factual  information and emotional information.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Especially in countries like India, where such disinformation has  resulted in vigilante justice and lynch-mob violence, the question of  how we manage the emotional tenor of our information consumption is  critical. Information management giants like Facebook and its messaging  service WhatsApp have come under severe scrutiny because they have  become platforms of unfettered disinformation. Especially with  newly-literate digital users engaging with this information on sites  which are not informational but social, the viral trigger and emotional  responses has been quick and uncontrolled. The tech companies have  started introducing a variety of solutions — limiting the number of  people a message can be forwarded to, establishing filters that mark  messages as possibly suspicious, restricting the powers of group  broadcasting to moderators and introducing forward marks to signal  authorship.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;These technical solutions are only going so far in tackling the  fundamental question of emotional information. Technical solutions fall  back on the management of factual information. It can provide a series  of safeguards that could insert a pause between the first delivery and  immediate action, but this presumes that the person receiving and  sharing the information is interested in that pause. What we need, and  haven’t paid enough attention to, is how we can train people into  developing an emotional literacy for the age of information overload.  While the technology development has to continue its filtering and  managing, what we perhaps need is a people’s movement that focuses on  how to give voice to and recognise the emotional expression and  manipulation that these new information regimes are ushering in.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>The Right Words for Love</title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I don’t think, in all my years of growing up, I ever had my parents  say “I love you” to me. Not because they did not love me, but because in  Gujarati, the language we predominantly use at home, there is no  possibility of saying it. Any attempt — ‘Hoon tane prem karu chu’, or  ‘Mane tara par prem che’, would sound bookish, and thus, empty. But  Gujarati has lots of words for love. The love between father and son is  pitrutva, that of a mother towards her child is mamta, and of the child  for its parents is vatsalya; the sister’s preet finds a brother’s whal,  and siblings are bound in sneh. But these words have no translation  outside the rich tapestry of sociality they exist in, and this is the  same for almost all of our Indian languages.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;These are words that are nouns and it is difficult to use their verb  forms. They remain ideal types of feeling rather than descriptions of  action. So, it wasn’t a surprise to me that our parents didn’t — not  till long after we left home and English entered our family spaces —  ever tell us that they love us. We did not have the vocabulary for the  precise sentiment, and so we never said it. Instead, it manifested in  the touch, the embrace, the smile and the active intimacy of actions  which stood as testimony of the love that we could not define.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The lexicon of touching — the natural expression of love for me — was  the vocabulary of intimacy, trust, affection and acceptance in my  sociality. The clap on the back between friends, the hand on the  shoulder or the exuberant hug were manifestations of love. Who you can  and cannot touch was linked closely to who you can and cannot love, and  how. While the expression “I love you” waited for a reciprocal response,  the hand held in silence demanded no answer. Love in India, be it  social, familial or romantic, has always had that sense of the tactile.  Perhaps, that is the reason why kissing came to Bollywood so late,  because to kiss was to also claim and express love. To kiss without love  was obscene. Love, in India, is a physical verb.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;ins&gt;&lt;/ins&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Queer love, then, is no exception. It also did not have a local  vocabulary or language to express itself in. Our myths, legends, fables,  and epics are filled with queer practices — male gods taking female  forms, consummating their desire with same-sex persons, changing their  sexuality and genders in a fluid allegory of social intimacy. These were  not merely practices. They were the physical verbal languages,  signposts and registers of desire and love.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In implementing Section 377, the British ensured that they colonised  not only our country but also our bodies. They imported shame and put it  on practices and desires, which were accepted and celebrated in the  country. They insisted that the only acceptable love is one of penile  transaction that essentially leads to procreation — a violent law that  not only denied the actions of love between consenting adults of same  and different sexes, it alsoactively disallowed any local grammar of  love to emerge in the country.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The judgment decriminalising consensual sex between adults,  irrespective of their orientation or sex, is momentous because it  doesn’t just condone an action. It suggests that we are finally free to  locate and celebrate a language that can match our desires. The British  law criminalised our many ways of claiming love. This judgment elevates  our right to love as a fundamental right, and continues our Swaraj  movements by decolonising our intimacies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Decriminalisation of homosexuality, then, is not about queer love. It  is about all love. It is about recognising that as a society we can  only grow strong if we learn to love at intersections. In our  increasingly polarised times when actions of hate — lynching, murdering,  intimidation, bullying, trolling, and abuse — are on the rise, this  judgment reminds us that the only counter to such violence is going to  be in our right to love without fear, and, in any form that brings  happiness in our lives.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Digital Native: Hardly Friends Like That</title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Lately, my &lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/facebook/"&gt;Facebook&lt;/a&gt; timeline is flooded with people who are trying to “hack” Facebook’s  friendship algorithm. Ever since Facebook took away the option from its  users, to view their posts in reverse chronology, and made us slaves to  its algorithms that pick and choose, based on opaque rules, what we see  on our timeline, people have been frustrated with it. When your newsfeed  is compiled by an algorithm that selects and decides what is good for  you to see and what will be your interest, it doesn’t just mean that you  have lost control, but that you are being manipulated without even  noticing it, responding to only certain kinds of information that  triggers specific responses from you.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This has led to a lot of people trying to “fool” the Facebook  algorithm and taking their agency back. One of the most popular version  of this is a meme that announces that Facebook algorithms only show us  particular kinds of information from a certain kind of people, thus  creating an echo chamber where all we do is see pictures of cute cats,  dancing babies and holidays. The post suggests that if we all just talk  to each other more, then we will have meaningful conversations — like,  you know, about dancing cats, cute babies and where we wish to go on a  holiday.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;It is true that based on the nature of interaction, Facebook seems to  designate some connections as strong connections. So, if we are  chatting on Messenger, liking each others’s posts a lot, have many  friends in common, are tagged together in the same pictures, Facebook  makes a logical deduction that we have a lot in common in real life, and  that we would be interested in each other more than other low-traffic  connections. The meme asks people to leave a message on the post, start a  conversation, and with this clever ploy, upset the Facebook algorithm.  Now that we have chatted once, it suggests, Facebook is going to think  we are the best of friends and is going to show us more diverse sources  on the timeline.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;ins&gt;&lt;/ins&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This meme, and many like it, are attempts at taking agency in how we  curate and consume our social media. Both of them are romantic, human,  and absolutely flawed. They seem to think that Facebook’s algorithms  follow human logic, and that they work on simple principles which we can  counteract with simple actions. What they fail to take into account is  that in the world of big data connections, Facebook’s algorithms draw  their causal and correlative powers from more than a 100 data points  which create a unique profile for each of its users. They fail to  recognise that this message of resistance is still subject to the same  principles of “traffic generating capacity”, and will be showed more  often only for a temporary period until people stop interacting on that  thread. With time and waning interest, it will die and people will be  distracted by other information. They also don’t recognise that Facebook  is still going to show your post largely to the same people that it has  been showing your pictures to, and even if new people show engagement  with it, it is not going to radically change your timeline.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;While these posts are fun conversation starters, they cannot possibly  be taken seriously. If Facebook’s algorithms were this easy to fool,  every advertiser worth their salt would be busy manipulating the stream  without spending any money on the platform. More importantly, individual  actions are not going to circumvent the automation of our digital  collective behaviour. To pretend that there is scope for such actions in  the age of extreme customisation and profiling is a fool’s paradise. It  also deflects our attention from the fact that if these are critical  concerns, the responsibility of changing these conditions is not on the  users but on companies like Facebooks and the governments that have to  hold them accountable.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;You and I, with all our good intentions, are not going to be able to  “hack” Facebook’s algorithms or “fool” them into giving us results that  we want. The only thing that can produce this change is strong  regulation, robust policy, and taking the social media behemoth to task  about how it addresses the questions of human agency and choice. So, the  next time you want to produce real change, join the campaigns and ask  our government to do something so that we can control our social media  life.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Digital Native: Time to Walk the Talk</title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;#&lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/me-too-movement/"&gt;MeToo&lt;/a&gt; movements from around the globe have found a cultural and public force.  As victims of sexual and gendered violence and abuse, especially in the  workplace and professional fields, use the pseudo-safe space of the  internet to give testimony to their pain, grief, trauma, and despair,  the world has been forced to listen, and acknowledge that these  experiences are real, and the lingering scars that they leave on the  lives of these survivors need to be acknowledged and addressed. With  this one hashtag, the digital web has transformed victims into survivors  — giving them not just a public voice, but also a collective space for  support, the relief of finding care, and the catharsis of being heard  and seen, and to ask for accountability and justice for their  experiences.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Every survivor who has spoken using this hashtag, has done it not  only as a personal expression but also as an heroic civic duty, exposing  the often seen but never named problem of gendered and sexual violence.  Every hashtag has also exposed these survivors to backlash which  disbelieved, ridiculed, or bullied them into silence and shame. Every  person who has spoken up, to re-enact the violence which they live with,  has made themselves vulnerable to further attacks and stigmatisation  from the communities that they are speaking against.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The hashtag is important also because it is not just a platform for  survivors to speak but also for allies to come in. The responsibility of  addressing the question of gender and sexual violence cannot lie only  on the survivors. Hashtags are connectors — they are digital objects  that consolidate many different disparate elements and gives them a  common identity. #MeToo has made sure that the allies, the activists,  the people who are introspecting their own behaviour and their  complicity in naturalising these actions, all find a space to come  together. It is a ringing reminder that oppression and violence are  intersectional, and so our fights and resistances and communities will  also have to be intersectional. It reminds us that gender and sexual  violence are not “women’s problems” but social problems where women  often get victimised.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;When the #MeToo first became global news, what was refreshing was the  number of voices from India who decided to speak in support of the  survivors. A wide variety of people acknowledged that this is not just  an American problem but a problem that has even deeper roots in the  country. Woke Bollywood bros, new age silver screen feministas,  progressive creatives, and liberal audiences all came in unity to talk  about the state of gender and sexual violence in our everyday lives.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;But it just needed one puff of truth for the house of cards to  collapse. As Tanushree Dutta took the step to call out what we all know —  that Bollywood is a cesspit of exploitation and sexism — the tinsel  town squirmed. Apart from a handful of voices, most established veterans  either abstain from responding, feign ignorance, or rush to the defence  of a person who is now accused of sexual violence. The do-good  Twitterati, happy to comment on far-away foreign cases, is suddenly  hemming and hawing when the problem knocks at their doors and comes out  of the closet. The Dutta-Patekar conversations on social media are a  startling reminder that we remain still a space that is unsafe, hostile,  and intimidating for survivors to come out and tell their truth.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The digital hashtag allows you to connect to extensive distances and  stand in support of them. We travel with the hashtag to far-away lands  and add our voice and support to problems we might not immediately be  living through. It is good to remember, though, that hashtags also  travel. What was once distant will eventually come close to home. When  it does, the people who could perform their speech will have to move to  action. It might be a good idea to look at the Twitter history of every  big shot who had used #MeToo to extend their support against Weinstein,  and ask them, to do the same now. They need to be reminded that politics  is not in speech but in action. And if they do not stand up for Dutta  now, they will have not just failed Dutta but every woman who might have  wanted to come out and speak her truth against those who have abused  their power to demean and diminish the dignity of their lives.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Digital Native: Hashtag Fatigue</title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Information overload is our new default. We don’t just slip into a  condition of overload, we live in it on a daily basis. Every minute,  surrounded by digital devices that buzz, beep, chirp, blink and notify  us about the various information streams that shape us, we experience a  sensory overload that is unprecedented. One of the reasons for this  information overload is that digital networks work on traffic. Traffic —  the data that travels in bits, bytes, and packets, over the network  edges of our computation systems — is the lifeline of a network. A  network without traffic is dead. The network exists to circulate  information and transfer information. Take that away and the network is  just a whole lot of dead hardware.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;So, if a computational network is our default mode of  existence, then we will have to accept that these networks will continue  to incessantly circulate traffic and keep the edges that connect us as  nodes, busy, with a continued information stream. This is why our  machines are in a state of continued update, and this is why we expect  to receive and share new information in all states.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This state of information overload has led to some alarming signals  about human relationship with information: We find our attention now  shallow, because even before we have processed the first stream of  information, something else comes and dislocates that information.  Information intensity is replaced by information scale, so we are no  longer invested in a deep engagement with the information that comes to  us. For information to keep our attention longer than the click, we need  information to be repeated, consolidated, and updated over and over  again, so that we can keep focusing on the same topic, but on multiple  screens and interfaces.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The hashtag is a great example of this. Even though a hashtag excites  us, inspires us, and motivates us to engage with an information stream,  hashtags immediately dislocate us to other hashtags and other tangents.  It is easy to hijack hashtags by coupling them with others. It is  equally easy to make hashtags die by infusing them with misinformation  which makes the user disengage from the stream. Hashtags can make things  go viral, by being shared, and they can hold attention only if they are  fed by multiple and many voices that keep them alive.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;While viral hashtags have public attention and hold, they also lead  to a different phenomenon — what I call #hashtag fatigue. We get bored  of the hashtag, because the same few ones show up so many times, that  even when they have new material, we presume that we already know what  accompanies them. We also get tired of the hashtags, because they fill  up almost all our attention span. We get desensitised, often ignoring  the individual and collective experiences they consolidate. We learn to  ignore hashtags, because as more people share it, the more it seems to  be everyday, losing easily to other information sets that are screaming  for eyeballs.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;We see this in the way #&lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/me-too-movement/"&gt;MeToo&lt;/a&gt; is developing in India. As more women come out, naming their abusers  and enablers, we see a hashtag fatigue stepping in. We already see  people raising an emoji eyebrow and rolling their digital eyes while  there are abusers who are maintaining silence hoping that this will  phase out soon. There are people who have started making jokes about how  everything is now #MeToo, and this also feeds into the patriarchal  powers who are using this moment to paint themselves as victims of  vindictive women, dismissing their collective and individual trauma. We  see many survivors getting overwhelmed by the scale of voices trickling  in, feeling deafened by the continuous traffic that surrounds the  hashtag, but also creating an isolated island where nothing else  trickles in. We see news media already finding either new angles or  other controversies, because in the lifeline of the news cycle, this is  already old news.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In order for #MeToo to remain a sustainable social justice movement  and a long-standing solidarity, we will have to find other ways of  engaging with this movement. While the digital offers the first platform  and catalysis, we will have to find other spaces for the movement and  its ambitions to survive. It is time for us to simultaneously find forms  that will capture the urgency but move beyond the viral fatigue of the  #hashtag.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Digital Native: System Needs a Reboot </title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;On the internet, we produce information to be forgotten. The life of  digital information is shaped by conditions of volume, velocity and  variety (the three Vs). The scale of our collective digital content  production has now reached massive proportions. We produce more  information in a day than we have produced over entire centuries. So  trying to make human sense of this information is futile. We can be  assured that almost everything we write will be forgotten and archived  before it is consumed and remembered. The large volume also means that  in order for information to stand out, it needs velocity. The trend of  today will be replaced in a few clicks by something else. Fomo, the fear  of missing out, is not just a millennial anxiety, it is the new  natural. It is because information is continually being forgotten,  transferred from memory to storage, it needs to have variety. It needs  to be new but familiar, expected but exciting. Let’s call it, same same,  but different.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Renewal is the default of all our digital transactions. Our data  streams need constant renewal, our platforms demand updating, our habits  of social media engagement need maintenance, and we find new ways of  doing the same things over and over again. Our devices light up, with  frantic energy, with seductive beeps and sounds, reminding us of the  need to renew and update. The poetics of hope and regeneration have long  since given way to the politics of manipulation and transactions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;It is the state of continual renewal that perpetuates the fake news  economies, as people share without verifying, and consume without  reflection. It enables lynch mobs and vigilante violence. It is at the  heart of why outrageous claims, provocative politics and a state of  extreme apathy make their way into our digital conversations and  responses. This is why, hate speech has now become acceptable, and  actions without consequences is the new ethos online. It perhaps  accounts for why we seem to care more about our gadgets and services  than the people behind them. This is why, when we see a food-delivery  person stealing some food from our expensive orders, we ask for them to  be sacked, rather than being shocked by the deep irony of getting food  that costs more than anything the person can ever afford. It puts our  attention on to things that have more engagement value than things that  matter — which perhaps explains why three weddings with their obscene  displays of wealth and power had more social media engagement than  conversations about #&lt;a href="https://indianexpress.com/about/me-too-movement/"&gt;MeToo&lt;/a&gt; in the country.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This renewal has been naturalised as our new mode of being and  becoming, making us hypermobile drones that are always on the go, always  working, always interacting. The state of perpetual renewal is here to  stay, and we will have to figure out ways by which to live with these  three Vs. As we approach that time of the year, when we make new  resolutions, I want to offer the three Is which perhaps need to be  brought back into consideration in our unthinking digital actions:  intensity, intimacy, ingenuity.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The volume imperative of digital information favours scale. It wants more clicks, more eyeballs, more users. We get passionately invested for a brief period of time and then are moved on to the next thing. Instead of continually looking for volume, let us focus on intensity. We don’t need a thousand likes, we just need people who we care for, to like things that we do. Something doesn’t become important only when it circulates and goes viral — it becomes so because of the people who are involved in it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Similarly, the velocity of digital networks demands high speed. We click before we think, and we share before we verify. Our relationship with information has been reduced to sharing as opposed to processing. Maybe it is time to replace velocity with intimacy. When we encounter information, let us take a small pause, process and analyse, and instead of just blindly sharing, maybe respond and critique it, so that it is a relationship of value.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The expectations of variety provoke information that is often untrue or removed from reality. Our filter bubble echo chambers often establish this information as true through repetition rather than verification. We need to get out of the schizophrenic need for variety and concentrate instead on ingenuity — the truthiness of the information and our capacity to stand behind things that we say and share.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The three Vs of digital information are machine protocols. They put the computational in the centre and dictate how human behaviour will be shaped. Maybe it is time we think of the three Is instead, to focus on human needs and aspirations, and demand that our technologies measure up to what we can expect from each other.&lt;/p&gt;
