On November 14, the CIS-A2K team is organizing a one day orientation workshop on 'Documentation and Wikipedia Contribution' at the Kalinga Institute of Social Studies (KISS), Bhubaneswar from 10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

As Odia Wikipedia turns 13, what happens next?

Odia Wikipedia, one of several Indian-language Wikipedia projects, celebrated thirteen years of free knowledge contribution on June 3.

Launched in 2002—just a year after the English Wikipedia was launched—Odia Wikipedia has grown to be the largest content repository in the Odia language available in Unicode on the Internet. With over 8,900 articles and about 17 active editors (also known as “uikiali”) spread across various parts of India and abroad, the project has become more than just an encyclopedia. The voluntary editor community has put its efforts into acquiring valuable content, re-licensing them under Creative Commons (CC) licenses, and building tools for acquiring more encyclopedic content from various sources.

The community has also engaged over 2,500 people through various outreach programs, such as the Wikipedia Education Program. For its thirteenth anniversary, the community released a character-encoding converter that promises to unlock massive amounts of content—from government portals to journals, newspapers and magazines that have their content in various legacy encoding systems other than Unicode. This has been a major roadblock in the search for and reuse of digital content in the Odia language. During our thirteenth anniversary celebrations, the community spent a day assessing community needs, addressing issues, and identifying priority areas to focus on in the future. This was arguably the first time almost the entire community gathered in a physical space. This allowed Odia Wikipedia administrator, and the most active Odia Wikimedian, Mrutyunjaya Kar and I to design a needs assessment survey. Participating Wikimedians were asked to brainstorm various problems they face in two major areas: editing and outreach.

More than a third instead blamed the lack of good quality content on Wikipedia and the Internet as a whole in the Odia language, in English related to Odia language, and in Odisha on the Internet. Aditya Mahar, the second-most active editor on the Odia Wikipedia, feels that the biggest setback for the Odia Wikipedia is a lack of interest in contributing in Odia language. He says many Odia speakers feel that Odia is not needed to acquire and share knowledge.

“Like many others, I have been very eager to learn and share more about my home state and culture,” he says. “That’s why I started to contribute to the Odia Wikipedia, to tell my people about our rich cultural heritage in my language.”

He adds that he is concerned by the way many have been alienating Odia with the excuse of learning English to connect to the rest of the world. “I want my future generation to find everything they want to learn in Odia—from the history of Odisha, our art, architecture, Odia language and people, and our cultural extravaganza,” he says.

Mrutyunjaya Kar, an administrator on the Odia Wikipedia and the most active contributor, feels that Wikipedia is like a marathon and there is a great need for fresh blood in the community. Asked if the community will ever die out, Mrutyunjaya feels that even with a small community, the Odia Wikipedia community is always going to thrive, even if, in the worst case, only one active Wikipedian remains. So, we badly need new users to pass the baton. For him, community support and bonding with the fellow editors is the most important thing to lead a community.

Mrutyunjaya adds that creating many short articles, known as “stubs”, is a necessary evil and essential for a project like the Odia Wikipedia, as they are drafted as a by-product of collaborative editing.

“It takes little longer for a small community like Odia to expand and enhance quality of stubs though,” he says. “Many-a-times, new editors learn about Wikipedia editing while creating stubs. However, all the active Wikipedians agreed during the thirteenth anniversary not to create or promote many stubs.”

Odia Wikisource launched in Odisha capital

After the success of Odia Wikipedia, it is now the turn of Odia Wikisource to bring the best of Odia literature to the people of Odisha in the language they speak.

Having gone through a rigorous assessment process by the Wikimedia language committee and Wikimedia Foundation’s board before being released last month, the Odia Wikisource was formally launched at Jayadev Bhawan on Friday.

Launching the Odia Wikisource, eminent linguist Padhma Shree Dr Debiprasanna

Pattanayak emphasized the importance of such a project in Odia language to make the best of Odia writing available on computer, mobile and tablet to ensure that youngsters take interest in Odia.

“e-books are the key to take Odia to the masses, especially those who are outside Odisha and have no access to libraries,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Editor of leading Odia daily ‘Sambad’ said; “Internet should be treated as a friend of our language rather than as an enemy.”

He announced the relicensing of 19 books published by Ama Odisha under a Creative Commons Share Alike license that will be digitized on Wikisource.

Patnaik evinced keen interest in collaborating with the Odia Wikimedia community in the future for such language and cultural work.

Presiding over the function, noted poet and thinker Dr Haraprasad Das advised the youth for filling the gaps in the Odia language using internet.

“Odia Wikisource is connecting me with my roots, my language and culture”, said Pankajbala Sarangi, who has made the highest of 1200 edits on Odia Wikisource.

The credit for the most extensive work on Odia book digitization, however, goes to Bhubaneswar based non-profit Srujanika that digitized about 740 books.

Started two years ago as an incubator project, the Odia Wikisource is now live on the internet at or.wikisource.org.

The project now houses many precious books including writings of noted authors like Fakir Mohan Senapati, Upendra Bhanj and the entire Odia Bhagabata.

It includes most periodicals that were published between1850-1950. Odia Wikisource will further this work by going one step ahead in digitizing books in the form of text in Unicode so that they appear in a search engine search in Odia language.

It allows readers to read books from computers, mobiles and tablets, even permitting them to print and use the content elsewhere. These books are way lighter than the scanned books. This is making a way for audio books.

Books for which copyright has lapsed and many rare books could be digitized and preserved for the future.

Apart from old and valuable books, books by renowned and contemporary authors like Padma Shree Debiprasanna Pattanayak, Ramakrushna Nanda, Dr Jagannath Mohanty, Dr Subrat Prusty, Bharat Majhi and Nirmala Kumari Mohapata, and many other authors have been taken by the Odia Wikisource team to digitize.

In collaboration with Wikimedians from Bhubaneswar, Bangalore based non-profit Centre for Internet and Society’s Access To Knowledge program was instrumental in training the faculty of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS). “50 students from KISS have digitized 4 books and are continuing to contribute more”, says Preetinanda Roy.

Wikimedians also converted Odia Bhagabata to Unicode by using the source text from Odia.org. “We are aiming to bring more rare books and manuscripts in Odia in the near future,” said Odia Wikimedian Mrutyunjaya Kar.

Odia Wikipedia Workshop in IIMC, Dhenkanal

An Odia Wikipedia Workshop was conducted at IIMC, Dhenkanal on 31 January, 2017

Since 2013, the Odia Wikipedia community has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal for enabling students of the institution to partake in and contribute to the Wikimedia movement. An Odia Wikipedia workshop was conducted for the students of the institution on 31 January, 2017. The students were given an orientation on the basics of editing Wikipedia on the web and on their smart phones in addition to an explanation of Wikipedia policies, history of Wikipedia and Wiki News.

The 45 English and Odia language students with a male: female ratio of 60: 40, who took part were given a live demonstration of these topics. Along with the help of supportive faculty members, the students were exposed to Commons and Incubator as well. Overall, the event saw the creation of 20 new editors on Odia Wikipedia. A follow-up workshop is also being planned for the students in the coming months.

Odia Wikipedia: Sambalpur University Workshop

An Odia Wikipedia orientation-cum-workshop program was organised for the students of Sambalpur University on 27 November, 2016.

Over the last couple of years, the Odia Wikipedia community has been successful in organising workshops and outreach programs in different parts of coastal and central Odisha. With over 38 active Wikipedians (as of 2016), the Odia community is growing everyday and expanding across different parts of Odisha. The recent increase in the number of Wikipedians in western Odisha inspired the community members to conduct an introductory Wikipedia workshop in Sambalpur University.

On 27th November 2016, an orientation-cum-workshop program for Odia Wikipedia was organised for the students of Computer Science and Application Department and the Odia Department in Sambalpur University. 57 participants, comprising 30 male and 27 female participants attended the event. 5 faculty members were also present. Dr. Chitta Ranjan Dash, the Vice Chancellor of the University was the Guest of Honour for the workshop. Three Odia Wikipedians- Mrutyunjay Kar, Jnanaranjan Sahu and Nistha Ranjan Dash facilitated the workshop as mentors.

The workshop began with an introduction to Odia Wikipedia and Odia Wikisource digitisation efforts by Dr. Sarada Baboo, a professor from the Computer Science and Application department. The first session introduced the various Wikimedia projects to the participants. The participants were given an introduction on how to contribute to the different Wiki projects. They were also given an orientation on Wikipedia policies and guidelines. After this, the participants were introduced to Odia Wikipedia and its development over the years. The post lunch session trained participants on creating user accounts, articles, and other basic dos and don’ts on Wikipedia. During the training session, over 20 Wikipedians were able to create accounts.

The Wikipedia workshop in Sambalpur University was an important step to raise awareness about the Wikipedia movement in western Odisha, This was the first workshop in Sambalpur University and the second workshop in western Odisha after three years. Over 196 colleges are affiliated to Sambalpur University, in seven different districts in western Odisha. A regular follow up with the University, the faculty and the students will help in furthering the free knowledge movement in western Odisha.

Wikipedia workshop was held at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal, on Monday. The workshop was inaugurated by Head of IIMC, Dhenkanal, Dr Mrinal Chatterjee.

Inaugurating the workshop, Dr Chatterjee said, “We are always sourcing knowledge from Wikipedia. So now it becomes our duty to enrich it by writing articles for Wikipedia.”

He specifically asked Odiya Journalism students to write more in Odia Wikipedia as there is less content in Odia as compared to other Indian languages.

Subhashish Panigrahi, Program Officer, Access to Knowledge, Centre for Internet Society, coordinated the entire event along with members of Odia Wikipedia, Dr Subas Chandra Rout, Mrutyunjaya Kar and Sasanka Sekhar Das. They provided hands-on training about editing, styles and techniques of writing on Wikipedia to the students.

“Anybody can write and edit available articles on Wikipedia,” Panigrahi said while encouraging students to volunteer for Wikipedia.

Not only Odiya and English, students were also encouraged to contribute articles in various other Indian languages. Students of both Odiya and English Journalism were present during the day-long workshop.

Odiya Wikipedia team are planning to organise a series of workshop with IIMC, Dhenkanal in coming months.

Women’s History Month: Sambad collaborates with Odia Wikipedia for a Two Day Edit-a-thon

Sambad's 100 Women Edit-a-thon: Two day edit-a-thon to increase quantity and quality of women-related articles on Odia Wikipedia

Sambad, in collaboration with Odia Wikipedians, is organising a two day ‘edit-a-thon’ on March 18 and 19, 2017 to increase and improve articles on women in Odia Wikipedia. Sambad, a regional language daily newspaper in Odisha, is among the most widely circulated and published newspapers as it is from eight key cities in the state, including the capital city of Bhubaneswar. The event will be organised in Sambad Bhawan Bhubaneswar with around 15-20 participants from different walks of life.

In 2011, a survey carried out by the Wikimedia Foundation found that only 8.5 percent of Wikipedia editors were female. Since then, awareness has risen and many have found the editor demographic imbalance to be a strong reflection of what the encyclopaedia does or does not cover, including how written language and discourse were constructed on the pages and how discussion flows on article talk pages.

The aim of this 100 Women Edit-a-thon is to create articles on 100 Women from Odisha, hailing from different fields of work. Mrutyunjaya Kar, Admin, Odia Wikipedia hopes that “through this edit-a-thon, Odia Wiki will get a new batch of female Wikimedians. I hope all the other Indic Wikipedias will replicate this to create and improve articles in their respective languages.” The Women’s Studies department of Utkal University and the archives of the Sambad newspaper are major resources for this edit-a-thon.

The program will run for two days with a batch of journalists from Sambad and Eastern Media along with local Wikipedians from the city. Tanaya Patnaik, Director of Eastern Media says, “Odisha and Odias have such rich history and accomplishments, but information regarding the same is limited on the Internet. Wikipedia has emerged as the most popular go-to information site and it is essential that we Odias as a community get together to make our presence felt on the web. We loved the idea of collaborating with Odia Wikipedia for an edit-a-thon aiming at creating 100 Wikipedia articles on Odia women achievers. This would be an incredible learning experience for us.”

WikiTungi Bhubaneswar, the city based community of Odia Wikipedians is taking the lead in organising the event. The first day of this edit-a-thon is dedicated to introducing Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects to the participants. Participants will also be taught how to create user accounts. The second day of this edit-a-thon is to create or improve articles from the 100 Women list. Tanveer Hasan, Program Manager, CIS-A2K added, “It is vital that Wikimedians take the lead in contributing to a gender sensitive Wikipedia. Edit-a-thons such as these are instrumental in doing so. These events must be carefully nurtured and an effort to follow-up should be made. According to Wikidata, Odia Wikipedia is among the gender balanced Wikipedias in terms of content. 20.6% of articles on Odia Wikipedia are related to women. In collaboration with Sambad for this initiative, Odia Wikipedians strive to bridge the gender gap and create an example in this movement.

ପ୍ରଥମ ଭାରତୀୟ କେତୋଟି ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ (Wikipedia) ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ଅନ୍ୟତମ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ ଏହି ମାସ ୩ ତାରିଖରେ ତାହାର ୧୩ ବର୍ଷ ବ୍ୟାପୀ ମୁକ୍ତ ଜ୍ଞାନ ବିତରଣର ମହୋତ୍ସବ ପାଳୁଛି । ଇଂରାଜୀ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ ଆରମ୍ଭ ହେବାର ବର୍ଷେ ପରେ ୨୦୦୨ ମସିହାରେ ଆରମ୍ଭ ହୋଇଲା ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ । ଇଉନିକୋଡ଼ରେ ଉପଲବ୍ଧ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ ଏ ଭିତରେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଭାଷାର ବିଶାଳତମ ଅନଲାଇନ ଜ୍ଞାନକୋଷ (ଏନସାଇକ୍ଲୋପିଡ଼ିଆ)ରେ ପରିଣତ ହୋଇଛି । ଭାରତର ବିଭିନ୍ନ ସ୍ଥାନରେ ରହୁଥିବା ପାଖାପାଖି ୧୭ ଜଣ ସକ୍ରିୟ ସମ୍ପାଦକ (“ଉଇକିଆଳି” ନାମରେ ପରିଚିତ)ଙ୍କ ଦେଇ ସମ୍ପାଦିତ ଓ ୮,୮୦୦ରୁ ଅଧିକ ପ୍ରସଙ୍ଗରେ ଭରା ଏହି ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପଟି ଏକ ଜ୍ଞାନକୋଷରୁ ଅନେକ ଉପରେ । ସ୍ୱେଚ୍ଛାରେ ସମ୍ପାଦନ କରୁଥିବା ସମ୍ପାଦକମାନଙ୍କ ଉଦ୍ୟମ ହେତୁ କପିରାଇଟ ଥିବା ଅନେକ ବହିର ଲାଇସେନ୍ସ କ୍ରିଏଟିଭ କମନ୍ସ ଭଳି ମୁକ୍ତ ଲାଇସେନ୍ସରେ ରୂପାନ୍ତରତିକ କରାଯାଇ ସେସବୁକୁ ଇଣ୍ଟରନେଟ ଜରିଆରେ ଅଧିକ ପାଠକଙ୍କ ନିକଟରେ ପହଞ୍ଚାଇବାର ବାଟ ତିଆରି ହୋଇଛି । ଏହା ଛଡ଼ା ଲେଖକ ଓ ସତ୍ୱାଧୀକାରୀ (କପିରାଇଟ ମାଲିକ)ଙ୍କ ସହ ସନ୍ଧି କରି ଅନେକ ଉପାଦେୟ ରଚନା ଇଣ୍ଟରନେଟରେ ଉପଲବ୍ଧ କରାଯାଉଛି । or.wikipedia.org ରେ ଉପଲବ୍ଧ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆରେ ସଭିଙ୍କୁ ସମ୍ପାଦନା କରିବାର ସୁଯୋଗ ଦିଆଯାଇଥାଏ ଯାହା ଫଳରେ ଖବରକାଗଜ, ପତ୍ରିକାଆଦିରେ ଅନେକ ଉପାଦେୟ ବିଷୟରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ଲେଖାମାନଙ୍କ ଆଧାରରେ ନୂଆ ପ୍ରସଙ୍ଗ ତିଆରି ଓ ପୁରୁଣା ପ୍ରସଙ୍ଗର ଉନ୍ନତୀକରଣ କରାଯାଇପାରିବ ।

ଉଇକିଆଳିମାନେ ଜଗତରେ ଜଣାଶୁଣା ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ ଏଜୁକେସନ ପ୍ରୋଗ୍ରାମ ଭଳି ବିଭିନ୍ନ ଶିକ୍ଷଣ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟକ୍ରମ ହାତକୁ ନେଇ ପାଖାପାଖି ୨,୦୦୦ରୁ ଅଧିକ ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆରେ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ବିଷୟରେ ଲେଖିବା ବାବଦରେ ଶିଖାଇଛନ୍ତି । ଏହାର ୧୩ ତମ ଜନ୍ମତିଥି ପାଳନ ନିମନ୍ତେ ଉଇକିଆଳି ସମୂହ ଏକ ବିଭିନ୍ନ ସରକାରୀ ଜର୍ଣ୍ଣାଲ, ଖବରକାଗଜ, ପତ୍ରିକା ଆଦିରେ ଥିବା ଅଣ-ଇଉନିକୋଡ଼ ଲେଖାରୁ ଇଉନିକୋଡ଼ରେ ରୂପାନ୍ତର କରିବା ପାଇଁ କ୍ୟାରେକ୍ଟର ଏନକୋଡିଙ୍ଗ କନଭର୍ଟର ବିତରଣ କରିବା ଯୋଜନା କରୁଛି । ଏହା ଫଳରେ ସର୍ଚ ଇଞ୍ଜିନରେ ଉପଲବ୍ଧ ହୋଇନପାରୁଥିବା ଅନେକ ଉପାଦେୟ ଲେଖା ଡିଜିଟାଲ କଣ୍ଟେଣ୍ଟ ଭାବେ ଇଉନିକୋଡ଼ରେ ଉପଲବ୍ଧ ହୋଇ ଇଣ୍ଟରନେଟ ପାଠକମାନଙ୍କ ପଠନଯୋଗୀ ହୋଇପାରିବ ।

Odia Wikisource Sabha 2014

The Odia Wikimedia community, a volunteer community that contributes to Odia Wikipedia and its sister projects, in collaboration with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), a Bengaluru based non-profit that works in domains like IP reforms, Accessibility, Access to Knowledge (CIS-A2K), etc. are celebrating the launch of Odia Wikisource on November 28, 2014 at Jayadev Bhawan, Bhubaneswar.

Odia Wikisource, a sister project of Odia Wikipedia, is a free online library that houses Odia language books online and is available for free at https://or.wikisource.org. It is not just an online library but it focuses on bringing rare and old books that are out of copyright. CIS-A2K has been instrumental to also encourage many notable authors of Odisha to change their license terms to Creative Commons Share-Alike (CC-by-SA) license, a license that allows public access and ability to reuse the content to expand the knowledge base in Odia language on the Internet.

We are honoured to invite you to join us to take part in the discussion on “Setting a roadmap for Odia book digitization” during 3-5 pm, screening of documentary “Odia: Silalekharu Mobile”, the public meeting and award ceremony thereafter.
