Sting job by Hyderabad scientist exposes fake journals

Scientists have at last found a cure for Schlodomoniasis -- a deadly brain infection caused by the "inter-galactic parasite Klaousmodium cruzi" -- they claim to have identified for the first time.

The article was published in Business Standard on October 11, 2018. Subbiah Arunachalam was quoted.

Beth Smith and co-workers at "Sanchez Institute for Biomedical Sciences for Doopidoo Research" in Morocco have published their discovery in three science journals and also reported a novel method called "Magnetic Oddities Radiation Therapy (MORTY)" to treat the infection. The study was carried out in "Wakandan population".

If readers are breaking their heads to understand the startling findings and decipher the strange words like "Wakandan" and "Doopidoo", Farooq Ali Khan, a college professor and PhD student in Hyderabad and a co-author of the paper, had the last laugh.

"It was not intended to be a scientific paper," he told this correspondent in an email. "It was my sting operation to expose publishers of predatory journals who are churning out fake science for profit."

Open access journals are supposed to provide an online platform for rapid dissemination of latest updates in science and technology. Their publishers don't charge the readers as access to these journals is free, but they charge the authors wanting to have their research papers published in these journals.

Inspired by previous publishing "stings", Khan wanted to test whether open access journals would publish an obviously absurd paper liberally salted with nonsense for the sake of money from gullible authors anxious to publish.

He created a spoof manuscript titled "Newer Tools to Fight Inter-Galactic Parasites and their Transmissibility in Zygirion Simulation", and submitted it to several suspect journals from the list kept online by Jeffrey Beall -- an associate professor and librarian at the University of Colorado who coined the term "predatory journal" -- as a public service to his colleagues.

All the hilarious fake names like "schleem", "dinglebop" and "schwitinization", that do not make any sense, as well as images and graphs published in the paper, were fabricated.

The "Zyrgion simulation", and "intergalactic parasites" are all references to "Rick and Morty" -- a US Cartoon Network's animated science fiction programme about the misadventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith.

Khan, a great fan of "Rick and Morty", submitted the paper with Beth Smith (Rick's granddaughter in the cartoon show) as the corresponding author and himself as co-author. Two other authors' names were made-up, and Sukant Khurana -- a scientist at Central Drug Research Institute in Lucknow, who offered to help Khan in this sting, was another author -- all affiliated to an institution in Morocco that does not exist.

The so-called "Magnetic Oddities Radiation Therapy" developed by the authors to treat the brain infection is again nothing but an expansion of "MORTY", a character in the cartoon show.

Anyone with commonsense would have noticed all the nonsense and consigned the paper to trash, but Khan surprisingly found it was accepted for publication by 10 journals for fees ranging from $75 to $650.

After some bargaining over fees, three scientific journals -- ARC Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, IOSR Journal of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences, and Clinical Biotechnology and Microbiology -- published the paper without a second glance.

Khan says his "scientific prank" was intended to expose the seriousness of predatory journal industry and to create awareness among people who are beginning their careers in science. "These predatory journals are polluting the scientific record with junk science and are also resulting in fake news."

"When the Open Access Declaration was drafted in 2002, no one would have imagined that many unscrupulous individuals would pollute the entire system of scholarly communication with predatory journals solely with the idea of making money," Subbiah Arunachalam, renowned information scientist and Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Internet and Society in Bengaluru, told this correspondent in an email.

"Unfortunately, many Indians -- both individuals and companies -- are in this business," he said. "Predatory journals pose a big threat to the integrity of research."

"These are shameful acts by greedy publishers," Subhash Lakhotia, a professor of zoology at the Benaras Hindu University, told this correspondent in an email. "Until we stop payments of all kinds of open access charges and modify the present faulty assessment system that relies on numbers of publications, predation in one or the other form would continue."

Broadcasters Eager For Global Signal Protection; Others Warn Of Major Players Sneaking In

The so-called broadcasting treaty being negotiated at the World Intellectual Property Organization is supported by broadcasters’ organisations in the hope that it will stanch signal piracy. Some voices however, warn about creating a right that might be captured by large internet corporations such as Facebook, Google and Netflix, which can be a stone’s throw away from acquiring radio or television channels to qualify for the protection of the potential treaty. They also challenge the duration and scope of the protection. A seminar gathering stakeholders last week looked at implications of the treaty.

Knowledge Ecology International organised a seminar on 3-4 October gathering civil society speakers, international organisation representatives, and a representative of the broadcaster community.

Discussions were based on a working document [pdf] for a treaty on the protection of broadcasting organisations, and a revised consolidated text [pdf] on definitions, object of protection, rights to be granted and other issues, prepared by the SCCR Chair Daren Tang of Singapore, to be discussed at the next session of the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, from 26-30 November.

Broadcasters: Current Protection not Sufficient

Heijo Ruijsenaars, head of intellectual property law at the European Broadcasting Union, explained the need for broadcasters to have additional rights going beyond the 1961 Rome Convention for the Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organizations.

Key reasons for a treaty include the need for broadcasting to protect their investment in programming and dissemination, he said.

The current protection in view of the technology is not sufficient in a time where viewers want to access content whenever and wherever they want, which means it has to be delivered in a different way than traditional broadcasting, according to Ruijsenaars. This shift in technology also gave way to increasing piracy, he said, adding that signal piracy is a global issue and it is important to have a treaty covering everybody on the planet.

Ruijsenaars said there is evidence of ever-growing piracy and WIPO does not discuss enough the reasons underlining broadcasters’ neighbouring rights. For broadcasters it is not the delivery of signal that matters, he said, but that the public is provided with programmes.

Benefits for the public of those programmes include the provision of diversified information on national and local matters; educational content; special programming for niche or minority audiences; enhancement of public awareness and media literacy; supporting of independent audiovisual production; promotion of local authors, actors and artists; and the creation of new services on multiple platforms, his presentation listed.

If the focus of the discussion remains merely about the signal, he said, then it misses the broadcasters’ activity. Broadcasters make a programme, then embed it in a signal, which is then broadcast. The broadcast is the tool by which programmes are delivered to the public but producing the signal is just a necessary technical activity, he added.

The most important element of broadcasting is its independence from the audience, according to Ruijsenaars, it does not matter how many people are watching. It is also independent from the content since the content is covered by copyright, and independent from transmission, since each signal has its own protection.

In the digital age, most people have hybrid television which can receive both online and traditional signal from broadcasters at the same time, without them being aware of, or caring about, the difference, he said. In Europe, some 60 million households own an internet-connected TV set, he added.

The treaty would not impede but foster freedom of expression, it would stimulate innovation in consumer devices. would have no impact on the public domain or on internet service providers’ liability, he argued, adding, “If there is no treaty, everybody loses out.”

Beware of Large Internet Corporations Morphing

Anubha Sinha of the Center for Internet and Society, said the issue of signal piracy affects mostly sports broadcasters, and a potential narrow treaty could address this particular problem. A treaty as the one considered at the moment could have unintended adverse effects, she said.

The beneficiaries of the treaty appear to be only broadcasting organisations, but today it is impossible to distinguish between computer networks and wired or wireless means, she noted, asking about the risk of accidentally creating rights that could be misused “by the likes of Google, Facebook, Netflix…”

Facebook recently acquired the rights to broadcast La Liga games in the Indian sub-continent, she noted, warning about the “weak treatment” given to exceptions and limitations in the current treaty draft. She added that the treaty would affect the existing commons and the methods by which commons are being made accessible today.

The 1961 Rome Convention is narrow and broadcasters are facing competition from internet-based services that operate with fewer rights, but provide services that the public wants, which is part of the problem, according to James Love from Knowledge Ecology International.

Citing SCCR Chair Tang’s current proposed language, Love said that the definition of a broadcaster stating that “entities that deliver their programme-carrying signal exclusively by means of a computer network do not fall under the definition of a ‘broadcasting organization'” intends to exclude companies such as YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix, but would include other companies being broadcasters and also having internet platforms at the same time, such as the BBC.

That is creating a special right. which might be challenged by other companies arguing that those rights are contrary to a level playing field, he said.

It is also very easy for companies such as Facebook and Amazon to buy a radio station somewhere on the planet, thinking otherwise is naive, he said. This point was also made by Ryan Merkley of Creative Commons.

Love produced a colour-coded document [pdf] showing developments in technologies to distribute, broadcast or stream audio and audiovisual content from 1887 to 2018.

In white, the document lists what concerns traditional broadcasting, in yellow internet technologies, in blue technologies to make physical copies of audio and audiovisual recordings, and in green norm-setting activities. The vast majority of items listed belong to the yellow sections.

Players in the yellow fields will be the beneficiaries, he said. “You will be transferring money” to large platforms, the biggest of which are in the United States, he said, adding that the concentration will be much larger than in the radio and television arena.

To remedy those potential dangers, Love’s presentation suggested to eliminate post-fixation rights, and install mandatory exceptions including news of the day, public affairs, documentary films, education, and quotations.

Ruijsenaars argued that the European Union has legislation protecting post-fixation rights, and that did not bring any issues either with rights holders or the public interest.

50 Years Protection ‘Outrageous’

Love also challenged the proposed 50 years of protection. “If you were to keep a copy of something for 50 years,” the chances are that no technology would still be able to read it, he said, adding that if the treaty protects post-fixation rights, it is no longer protecting a signal.

Cristiana Gonzalez of the Centro: Tecnologia, Espaços, políticas públicas, Brazil, also said the treaty should be confined to immediate transmission without post-fixation rights. In Brazil, she said, organisations may not acquire protection for any deferred transmission.

The proposed term of protection should be no more than a few seconds, 24 hours if one wants to be generous, she said. Extending it further could have consequences for the public domain, impact cultural diversity and democracy, by for example preventing access to historical information, she said, adding that giving a monopoly over content could be dangerous.

Merkley said the current draft of the treaty could have a number of negative impacts. The world has and is changing, he said, and it is no longer a matter of creating rules for industry alone. “Every one of you is a copyright holder,” he said, adding that the draft treaty forgets about the public.

There have been many poor choices for the web, he argued, and the treaty would yet be another wrong choice. Negotiators have to be careful not to disturb the whole ecosystem to support an industry threatened by improvements in technology, he said.

He also called 50 years of protection “unreasonable” and said in the most compelling case of protection for sports event broadcasting, should be termed in hours. The most alarming in the proposed text, according to Merkley is that it would give post-fixation rights for public domain works. “This is outrageous,” he said, as broadcasters do not own this content and did not create it so they should have no rights over it.

Ruijsenaars commented that if the content is in the public domain, like a film, it can be found somewhere else than in the broadcast, which is protected.

Amalia Toledo of the Karisma Foundation said the rights awarded by the treaty to broadcasters could impede or restrict the flow of information that may not be protected by copyright, such as news of the day, and speeches from public officials. In Latin America, she said, there are various examples of how the political power has used copyright protection to silence voices.

This new right would be a direct attack on creators’ possibility to share their works as they see fit, she said. It would also ignore the public interest in having access to information, knowledge and culture, she added.

If a treaty is agreed against signal piracy, the protection should be for hours after the transmission, not 20 or 50 years, she said.

5th Global Congress on IP and the Public Interest

The event was co-organized by PublicCitizen, Washington College of Law, American University, O'Neill Institute and the American Assembly, Columbia University.

His co-panelists were Pam Samuelson (Berkeley Law), Niva Elkin-Koren (Uni of Haifa) and Pedro Mizukami (Founder of Centro, Brazil). The session was moderated by Mike Carroll and Christine Farley (both of American University).
Anubha Sinha and Sunil Abraham along with Jorge Contreras (University of Utah), spoke on the panel titled "Fueling the Affordable Smartphone Revolution in India" where they presented work on the PT project.
CIS signed on as supporting members to the Civil Society Proposal for a Treaty on Education and Research Activities (TERA) which was formally finalized and made ready for organizational and individual endorsements. The treaty can be viewed here.

Christ (DU) students enrolls for 3rd Wikipedia certificate course

Students of Christ (Deemed to be University) enrolled themselves for the third Wikipedia certificate course for the academic year of 2018-19, to understand the usage of Wikimedia projects.

A group of 37 students from Christ University in Bengaluru (Bangalore) India have enrolled themselves for a Wikipedia certificate course for the academic year of 2018-19. As an active step towards enabling the awareness on content editing and contributing skills on Wikipedia in vernacular languages, Christ (Deemed to be University), in collaboration with the CIS-A2K started the certificate this course for students in 2016. The Wikipedia certificate course is conducted after normal working hours for a total of 45 hours and carries 2 credits for the academic records of the University.

The objective of this certificate course is to enable students to acquire skills working along with Wikimedia projects which involve both technically equipping and holistic through its instruction. The course consists of three major components, the first step is an introduction to the concept of Wikipedia, which incorporates the history of online encyclopedias and the evolution of Wikipedia as one of the largest online encyclopedias available on the Internet. It also involves looking for resources for drafting articles on User sandbox and moving articles to the main space. The second step teaches students on how to edit and publish articles on Wikimedia projects, also adding tables and references, and also includes introduction to common templates, wikification of articles, legal aspects, policies, and guidelines, and how to identify vandalism and tackle it. The third step discusses Wikipedia’s notability and social significance, which lets the students understand Wikipedia in a critical and evaluative manner, where topics such as its ethics, existence as a social community, existence as a democratic project, How Wikipedia is used by students, teachers librarians and journalists.

Learning outcomes of the course: Create and edit wiki articles of good quality, with references, illustrations and templates etc, Capacity to teach Wikipedia with peer groups, without any fear. Discuss what is a reasonable source critical approach for using Wikipedia as a reference. Outline the common criticism of Wikipedia's reliability and discuss how the reliability problems can be tackled.

Wikisource Handbook for Indian Communities

Wikisource is one of the trending Wikimedia projects. Many new editors and new books to Indic language Wikisource's get added over a period of time. However, new editors as well as existing editors face numerous problems while working with the content online. The Centre for Internet & Society's Access to Knowledge (CIS-A2K) team, to help the editors, has created this Handbook. CIS invites feedback to the first draft of this Handbook. CIS-A2K will continue to work with the Wikipedia communities to improve their efforts towards developing Wikisource.

Preface

Currently, CIS-A2K is working with five Indian-languages Wikimedia communities (Kannada, Konkani, Marathi, Odia, and Telugu) and one focus project area (Wikisource with punjabi community). While working with the above mentioned Indic Wikimedia communities, we noticed that there are many similarities between the issues and challenges faced by these communities. So, we decided to create this “Wikisource Handbook for Indian Communities”.

At first, we went through the Wikisource of each language and noted the status. Then we talked to Indic Wikipedians to know more about the Wikisource related issues that they are facing. We also asked for the feedback on the first draft of this handbook. Our actual work will start after the release of this book, when we’ll work with the communities to improve their efforts towards developing Wikisource.

కార్యక్రమంలో భాగంగా వికీపీడియన్లతో వల్లభనేని అశ్వినీ కుమార్, ముక్తవరం పార్థసారధి పలు అంశాలు చర్చించారు. పవన్ సంతోష్‌ ఈ సందర్భంగా వికీపీడియా నిర్మాణం వెనుక మూలస్తంభాలు, వాటి అమలు, తెలుగు వికీపీడియా స్థితిగతులు వగైరా వివరించారు. ప్రారంభంలో తెలుగు వికీపీడియాలో నెలనెలా ఇరవై నుంచి ముప్పై మిలియన్ల వరకూ పేజీ వ్యూలు ఉంటున్నాయని పవన్, రహ్మాన్ వివరించారు. ప్రధానంగా మొబైల్‌ వేదికగా చదువుతున్న తెలుగువారు తెలుగులోనే సమాచారాన్ని ఆశిస్తున్నారని వివరించారు. (ఇతర బాధ్యతల కారణంగా ఆపైన సమావేశం నుంచి రహ్మాన్ నిష్క్రమించారు) తెలుగు రచయితలు ఎక్కువమంది వివరాలు తెలుగు వికీపీడియాలో దొరకాలని, అందుకు అవసరమైతే డేటా స్థాయిలో తాము సహకరించగలమని వల్లభనేని అశ్వినీకుమార్ పేర్కొనగా తెలుగు వికీపీడియా విషయ ప్రాధాన్యత పరిధిలోని వారికి తెవికీలో వ్యాసాలు సృష్టించడం, మిగిలిన అందరి వివరాలను వేరే వేదికలో సమాచారం అందుబాటులోకి తేవడం చేయవచ్చని వీవెన్ సమాధానమిచ్చారు. ముక్తవరం పార్థసారధి ఉదాహరణ కోసం రచయిత త్రిపుర వ్యాసాన్ని తెరిచి అందులోని సమాచారాన్ని పరిశీలించి ప్రారంభ స్థాయిలో ఉన్నా ఇలా ఎందరో రచయితలు, ఇతర అంశాల గురించి విజ్ఞానాన్ని అందించడం చాలా కీలకమని పేర్కొన్నారు. పార్థసారధి మాట్లాడుతూ ఏ విషయంలోనైనా అత్యున్నత నాణ్యత కోసం అంటూ అసలు పనిచేయకపోవడం కన్నా సాధ్యమైనంత ఉత్తమ నాణ్యతతో పని జరుగుతూండడం మంచిదని తన దృక్పథాన్ని వెల్లడించారు. పవన్ సంతోష్‌ ఒక మంచి వ్యాసాన్ని చూపించి, ఈ స్థాయికి నాణ్యత అభివృద్ధి చేయాలన్న లక్ష్యంతో పనిచేస్తున్న వికీపీడియన్లూ ఉన్నారని తెలిపారు. పవన్ సంతోష్‌ మాట్లాడుతూ మిసిమి వారు నాణ్యమైన వనరులు రూపొందించినవైన చిత్రకళ, సాహిత్యం, సంగీతం, నాట్యం అన్న నాలుగు అంశాలు తీసుకుని, ఈ రంగాల్లో తెలుగువారి గురించి తెలుగు వికీపీడియాలో నాణ్యమైన సమాచారం రూపొందించేందుకు ప్రామాణిక మూలాలను జాబితా వేయడం అందరికీ ఉపయుక్తమని సూచించారు. చర్చల్లో భాగంగా తెలుగు వికీపీడియా గురించి, తెలుగు వికీపీడియాలో అసలు రాయవచ్చన్న సంగతినీ విస్తృతమైన తెలుగు సముదాయానికి ఎలాగోలా తెలియజేయడం వల్ల వాలంటీర్ల సమస్య తీరుతుందని అభిప్రాయాలు వెల్లడయ్యాయి. ప్రణయ్‌రాజ్ వికీపీడియాలో రాయడం వల్ల ఆత్మతృప్తి, నైపుణ్యం లభిస్తుందని అయితే ఇతర మాధ్యమాల్లా వెనువెంటనే పేరు ప్రఖ్యాతులు రావడం సాధ్యం కాదని, అయినా సిద్ధపడి సేవచేస్తున్న వికీపీడియా సముదాయ సభ్యుల సమున్నత వ్యక్తిత్వం కొనియాడారు. అందరికీ తెలుగులో విజ్ఞానం అన్న తెలుగు వికీపీడియా ఉద్దేశాన్ని ప్రతిధ్వనిస్తూ తమ గ్రంథాలయాన్ని వేదికగా ఇచ్చి, చర్చలో పాల్గొన్నందుకు నిర్వాహకుడు పవన్ సంతోష్‌, వికీపీడియా సభ్యులు కృతజ్ఞతలు తెలిపారు. మిసిమి తరఫున విచ్చేసిన సభ్యులు ప్రతిగా ఒకేలాంటి లక్ష్యాలు ఉన్నందున తెలుగు వికీపీడియన్లు చేసే కృషి పట్ల తమకున్న ఉన్నత భావాన్ని వెల్లడించారు.

Workshop of Publishers and Writers on Unicode, Open Source and Wikimedia Projects

CIS-A2K team organized a workshop on unicode, open source and wikimedia projects at Pune on July 25, 2018.

CIS-A2K has started dialogue with the publishers for the last 6 months regarding FOSS, Open knowledge and content donation to Wikimedia Projects. As a result, various publishers and writers associated with social sector have taken initiative to organise workshops. Parisar, NGO working on environmental issues organised this orientation session for 4 activists, 5 publishers and 6 writers.

The following issues were discussed with demonstrations -

Adoption of Unicode and open source softwares
Make available old reference books, out of print books on web using new technology
Strengthening of Marathi Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wiktionary etc.
Social marketing of literary books
Explore the new medium of e books
To establish a company on lines of Amazon for e-selling of marathi books

Highlights

Paul Kurien and Akriti Bopanna carried out an analysis of the diversity of participation at the ICANN processes by taking a close look at their mailing lists.
CIS-A2K organized 6 events: partnership discussions with Misimi Telugu monthly magazine; partnership activity in Annamayya Library, Guntur, a workshop in Tumakur University; a workshop of river activists for building Jal Bodh; a workshop of publishers and writers on unicode, open source and wikimedia projects; and a Telugu literary conference.
CIS had worked with the Research and Advisory Group (RAG) of the Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace (GCSC). The work looked at the negotiation processes and strategies that various players may adopt as they drive the cyber norms agenda. In continuation CIS has brought out a report which focuses more extensively on the substantive law and principles at play and looks closely at what the global state of the debate means for India.
The debate surrounding privacy has in recent times gained momentum due to the Aadhaar judgement and the growing concerns around the use of personal data by corporations and governments. In this light CIS has made comments and recommendations to the India Privacy Code, 2018.
CIS drafted a response to a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) issued by the U.S. Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) on "International Internet Policy Priorities." CIS commented on the free flow of information and jurisdiction, mult-stakeholder approach to internet governance, privacy and security.
Elonnai Hickok, Shweta Mohandas and Swaraj Paul Barooah compiled the AI Task Force Report, India's first step towards an AI framework. The Task Force on Artificial Intelligence was established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to leverage AI for economic benefits, and provide policy recommendations on the deployment of AI for India.

Access to Knowledge

Our Access to Knowledge programme currently consists of two projects. The Pervasive Technologies project, conducted under a grant from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), aims to conduct research on the complex interplay between low-cost pervasive technologies and intellectual property, in order to encourage the proliferation and development of such technologies as a social good. The Wikipedia project, which is under a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation, is for the growth of Indic language communities and projects by designing community collaborations and partnerships that recruit and cultivate new editors and explore innovative approaches to building projects.

Internet Governance

As part of its research on privacy and free speech, CIS is engaged with two different projects. The first one (under a grant from Privacy International and IDRC) is on surveillance and freedom of expression (SAFEGUARDS). The second one (under a grant from MacArthur Foundation) is on restrictions that the Indian government has placed on freedom of expression online.

పద్యసౌందర్యం గ్రూపు సభ్యులకు వికీసోర్సు పరిచయం

తెలుగు స్వేచ్ఛా విజ్ఞాన ఉద్యమ సహచరులకు,
నమస్కారం. ఓ వాట్సాప్ సముదాయం గురించి ఇంతగా చెప్పడమేంటని, దాని నుంచి స్వేచ్ఛా విజ్ఞాన ఉద్యమానికి జరిగే మేలేమిటనీ మీకు ఆశ్చర్యం కలగవచ్చు.

అదేమీ సాధారణమైన వాట్సాప్ సముదాయం కాదు, గుడ్‌మార్నింగుతో ఓ దారీపోయే ఫోటో, గుడ్‌నైట్‌తో సంబంధంలేని వీడియో పంపేసి రోజును ముగించే పద్ధతి అక్కడ నిషిద్ధం. ఆ వేదిక మీద వారానికి ఐదురోజుల పాటు రోజుకొక కావ్యంలో కనీసం 20 పద్యాల విశ్లేషణ జరుగుతూంటుంది, ఆది, సోమవారాల్లో పద్యరచనలో శిక్షణ, తోచిన పద్యాలను గురించి చర్చ సాగుతుంది. ఎక్కడా ఎవరూ అనవసరమైన అంశాల ప్రస్తావన చేయడానికో, ప్రచారాలు సాగించుకోవడానికో వీలు లేదు. అలా వారు వ్యాఖ్యానించుకున్న శివభారతం పద్యకావ్యాన్ని వ్యాఖ్యాన సహితంగా సీడీల్లో అందుబాటులోకి తీసుకువస్తున్నారు. ప్రతీ ఏటా గురుపౌర్ణమి తర్వాత వచ్చే శని ఆదివారాలు విశాఖపట్టణంలో సమావేశమై పద్యాలను వారి రసజ్ఞ హృదయానికి నివేదిస్తారు, ఒకరికొకరు సన్నిహితులవుతూంటారు. అటువంటి అత్యంత అరుదైన సముదాయం పేరు పద్యసౌందర్యం, వారి కార్యక్రమం పేరు సారస్వత జ్యోత్స్న.
నేను వ్యక్తిగతంగా ఆ సముదాయంలో సభ్యుడిని, వారి క్రమశిక్షణ, సాహిత్య వ్యాఖ్యానం పట్ల, రసజ్ఞత లోతులు చూడడం పట్ల నిబద్ధత చూశాకా ఆశ్చర్యం కలిగింది. 2017లో జరిగిన సారస్వత జ్యోత్స్నలో పాల్గొన్నప్పుడు, వేదిక మీద నాకు ఇచ్చిన కొద్దిపాటి అవకాశాన్ని పురస్కరించుకుని తెలుగు వికీసోర్సు ద్వారా కాపీహక్కులు చెల్లిపోయినవి, సీసీ-బై-ఎస్‌ఎ లైసెన్సులో విడుదలైనవి అయిన పలు పుస్తకాలు ఎలా భావి తరాలకు అందేలా డిజిటైజ్ చేస్తున్నామో చెప్పాను. వెనువెంటనే సంప్రదించిన ఇద్దరు సభ్యులు - గుంటుపల్లి రామేశం, జి.ఎస్.వి.ఎస్.మూర్తి గార్లు అదే నెలలో జరిగిన వికీసోర్సు కార్యశాలలో పాల్గొని ఈనాటికీ వికీసోర్సులో వందలాది పుటలు మెరుగుపరుస్తూ, పుస్తకాలను పూర్తిచేస్తూ కొనసాగుతున్నారు. వీరిలో Ramesam54 కట్టా వరదరాజ కవి రామాయణ పద్యకావ్యాన్ని వికీసోర్సులో డిజిటైజ్ చేస్తూనే, ఆ పాఠ్యానికి తమ వ్యాఖ్యానం జోడిస్తూ అదే పద్యకావ్యాన్ని పద్యసౌందర్యం వాట్సాప్ గ్రూపులో వ్యాఖ్యానిస్తూ అలరిస్తూన్నారు. స్వామికార్యం స్వకార్యంలాగా అన్నమాట. Gsvsmurthy ఆంగ్ల వికీసోర్సులోకి వెళ్ళి Convocation Addresses of the Universities of Bombay and Madras అన్న పుస్తకం మీద పనిచేస్తున్నారు.
ఈ నేపథ్యంలో 2018 జూలై 28, 29 తేదీల్లో విశాఖపట్టణంలో జరిగిన రెండవ వార్షికోత్సవం - సారస్వత జ్యోత్స్నకు కూడా హాజరయ్యాను. కార్యక్రమం మొదటిరోజున భాగవతోద్యాన కోకిల అన్న బిరుదు పొందిన పౌరాణికులు జటావల్లభుల జగన్నాథం గారిని సత్కరించి, ఆయన ప్రసంగం ఏర్పాటుచేశారు. వేదికలోని పండితుడు, ఛందోగురువు సాంప్రతి సురేంద్రనాథ్‌, పద్యవిద్య ఛందోగ్రంథకర్త, అవధాని పేరి రవికుమార్ ప్రసంగించారు. తర్వాతిరోజు సాంప్రతి సురేంద్రనాథ్‌, పేరి రవికుమార్‌ల ఆధ్వర్యంలో పద్యసౌందర్య వేదిక సభ్యుల్లో ఆసక్తి కలవారు చెరొక మూడు పద్యాలూ సమర్పించి, వాటిపై తమ అవగాహన మేరకు వ్యాఖ్యానించగా, గురువులు విశేష వ్యాఖ్యానం చేశారు. రాంప్రసాద్‌ గారి ఆధ్వర్యంలో హంస అకాడమీ కార్యక్రమాన్ని నిర్వహించింది.

ఈ కార్యక్రమంలో రెండవ రోజున నేను (పవన్ సంతోష్‌) సభ్యుల్లో ఆసక్తి కల కొద్దిమందికి వికీసోర్సులో పద్యసాహిత్యాన్ని భద్రపరచడంలో ఉన్న ప్రయోజనాన్ని, ఆవశ్యకతను వివరించాను. అందులో ప్రత్యేకించి అవధానం చంద్రశేఖరశర్మ కుమారులు అవధానం అవధానం విశ్వనాథ శర్మతో తండ్రి రచించిన శ్రీ దేవీసువర్ణమాల పుస్తకాన్ని సీసీ-బై-ఎస్‌ఎ లైసెన్సులో పునర్విడుదల చేయించి, వారే టైపు చేసేలా శిక్షణనిచ్చాను, అయితే వారిది మొబైల్ మాధ్యమం కావడం వల్ల వికీసోర్సులో టైపు చేయడంలో ఇబ్బందులు ఎదుర్కొని వాటిని కొంతమేరకు పరిష్కరించుకున్నాం. వై.వి.ఎస్.ఎన్.మూర్తి గారికీ తెలుగు వికీసోర్సులో మౌలిక శిక్షణను ఇచ్చి, తర్వాత వారు టైపు చేయడంలో, మార్కప్‌కోడ్ నేర్వడం వంటివి ఫాలో-అప్ చేస్తున్నాను. ఈ ప్రయత్నాలలో పద్యసౌందర్య సభ్యులు, తెలుగు వికీసోర్సు వాడుకరి గుంటుపల్లి రామేశం చక్కని సహకారం అందించారు. ఇతర సభ్యులు మరికొందరు కూడా వికీసోర్సు వేదిక ద్వారా కృషిచేయడానికి ఆసక్తి చూపిస్తూండడంతో ఒక కార్యశాలను ప్రత్యేకించి వీరికోసమే చేయవచ్చన్న నిర్ణయానికి నేనూ, రామేశం గారూ వచ్చాం.
కమనీయమైన సారస్వత జ్యోత్స్న గంభీరమైన వికీసోర్సు మీద కాచి, తెలుగు సాహితీ లోకానికి పద్యసౌందర్యాన్ని పంచిపెడుతుందనే నమ్ముతూ ముగిస్తున్నాను.

Workshop of River activists for building Jal Bodh - Knowledge resource on Water

To build knowledge resource on rivers in Pune district, CIS-A2K team organized a workshop in Pune on July 25, 2018.

After the River Dialogue, Jeevit nadi organisation has taken initiative to train their team of activists in open knowledge and Wikimedia Projects. Activists and researchers from Jeevit Nadi, EcoUniv, Jal Biradari, Ecological Society, Sagarmitra organisations participated in the workshop. The groups presented their work, the database and the resources with them. These include photographs, videos, training material and data collected on site. Extensive discussion was made for evolving methodology to integrate in Wikimedia Projects. This was the first iteration in the series of workshops.

The second iteration of building content on rivers in Pune district was organised on 25th July by Jeevit Nadi organisation. In this 4 hour session, 5 participants worked on category tree and structure of article on river. The editing skills for this were imparted. The images and videos available in the repository were analysed for uploading. The categorisation of media was also planned. The issues like maps of rivers and heritage places on the banks were also discussed. This team will prepare the database and organise the media files available for uploading in respective categories. The next iteration is planned in September.

ವರದಿ

ತುಮಕೂರು ಸಂಪಾದನೋತ್ಸವ/ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರ ೨೫ರಂದು ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ತುಂಬಾ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಹೊಸ ೧೨ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಖಾತೆ ಸೃಷ್ಠಿಸಿದರು. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ೧೦ ಜನ ಹುಡುಗಿಯರು ಮತ್ತು ೨ ಹುಡುಗರು ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಇವರು ತುಮಕೂರು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದಯಾಲಯದ ಭೌತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಪದವಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು. ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದವರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದರು. ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದವರಿಗೆ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯದ ತಳಮಟ್ಟದ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆವು. ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯ ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ವಿಕಿಮೀಡಿಯ ಕಾಮನ್ಸ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟೆವು. ಅದಲ್ಲದೇ ವಿಕಿಯ ಇತರ ಪ್ರಾಜೆಕ್ಟುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಹೇಳಿದೆವು. ಸಮುದಾಯದಿಂದ ಲೋಕೇಶ ಕುಂಚಡ್ಕರು ಭಾಗವಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದವರು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಪಠ್ಯ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ಯೋಜನೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ ಈ ಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡೆವು. --ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ (ಚರ್ಚೆ) ೧೭:೦೪, ೨೯ ಜುಲೈ ೨೦೧೮ (UTC) ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಪಟ್ಟ dashboard link ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

వచ్చే నెల అటువంటి కార్యక్రమం నిర్వహించుకుంటే పత్రిక రచయితలను ఆహ్వానిస్తానని పేర్కొన్నారు. తెలుగు వికీపీడియాలో అభివృద్ధి చేయదలిచిన కొన్ని ప్రధానమైన అంశాలు (తెలుగు ప్రముఖులు, తెలుగు గ్రామాలు, భారతదేశ చరిత్ర, వగైరా) తీసుకుని తెవికీపీడియన్లు, మిసిమి రచయితలూ కలిసి ఆయా అంశాల్లో అత్యంత ప్రామాణికమని ఎంచే పుస్తకాలను (ఓ 50-100) జాబితా వేస్తే ఆ జాబితా భవిష్యత్తులో మనం తెలుగు వికీపీడియన్లకు అందుబాటులోకి తీసుకురావడం, వికీసోర్సు పునర్విడుదలలో ప్రాధాన్యత ఇవ్వడం వంటి కార్యక్రమాలకు స్వీకరించేందుకు వీలుంటుంది.
మిసిమి పత్రికలో తెలుగు వికీపీడియా నిర్మాణం, అది ఎదుర్కొంటున్న సమస్యలు, సభ్యులు దాన్ని అధిగమించడానికి చేస్తున్న ప్రయత్నాలు వంటి అంశాలను కలిపి తెవికీపీడియన్లు వ్యాసం రాయవచ్చు, తద్వారా అత్యంత సీరియస్, పాండిత్య, పరిశోధన ప్రధానమైన మిసిమి పత్రికను చదివే పాఠకులకు తెవికీపీడియా గురించి విజ్ఞప్తి చేసినట్టవుతుంది.
పత్రికను కేవలం లాభాపేక్ష కోసం కాక ఉన్నతమైన లక్ష్యాల కోసం నడుపుతున్నట్టు కాబట్టి కాపీహక్కుల మీద తమకు పట్టింపులేదనీ, పత్రికలోని నాణ్యమైన సాహిత్యం ప్రజలకు చేరువ కావడం ముఖ్యమనీ వారు తెలిపారు. పత్రికలోని పలు వ్యాసాలను కానీ, సంచికలను కానీ ప్రస్తుతం పత్రికల కాపీహక్కుల పునర్విడుదల విషయమై ఉన్న సాంకేతిక సమస్యలు అధిగమించి ఎలా సీసీ-బై-ఎస్‌ఎలోకి తీసుకురావచ్చన్నది ఆలోచించాలి.

How to write differently for different Telugu digital platforms - awareness session to Indu Gnana Vedika

Different digital platforms require a different style of writing based on nature, ethos, and audience of the platform. Without which writer and piece of writing can only find rejections and deletions.

On June 9th, CIS-A2K Community advocate, and Telugu Wikipedia Admin Pavan Santhosh took a session which aimed to improve writing abilities on various digital platforms to members of Indu Gnana Vedika, who earlier collaborated with A2K to release and digitize their books in Wikisource. On 22 June 2014, CIS-A2K conducted an event to re-license 10 books into CC license and Training on Tewiki to members of Indu Gnana vedika. Later Indu Gnana Vedika members started digitizing those books in Telugu Wikisource & Creating articles about Indu Gnana Vedika books and other aspects in Telugu Wikipedia.

Telugu Wikipedia admins found many of those articles are not notable to be in Telugu Wikipedia, notified and discussed. Finally deleted majority of them. One of the users introduced to Tewiki during this project - Indusri Ushasri continued to contribute improving those 10 books in Telugu Wikisource and undeleted articles about Indu Gnana vedika in Telugu Wikipedia.This event intended to be respectful and good closure for the partnership. The event was designed to provide a better idea to interested members of the organization about varying styles of different digital platforms like Telugu Wikipedia, e-Magazines, Websites, etc., and help them to choose various platforms to contribute according to the subject they wanted to write.

Pavan demonstrated various aspects that needed to look into while writing such a piece like the ethos of the platform, target audience, etc., 5 participants from Indu gnana vedika along with Indusri Ushasri participated in this event.

అన్నమయ్య గ్రంథాలయానికి సంబంధించిన లక్షా మూడువేల పుస్తకాల కేటలాగును ఇప్పటికే వికీపీడియాలోకి కొంతమేరకు విశ్వనాథ్ గారు, కొంతమేరకు సీఐఎస్-ఎ2కె వారు, రహ్మానుద్దీన్ ప్రభృతులు పూర్తిచేశారు. అయితే ఆపైన నిరంతరం పుస్తకాలు చేరుతూ జాబితా అప్‌డేట్ అవుతూండడాన ఆ పుస్తకాలు చేర్చడానికి గ్రంథాలయ సిబ్బందికి శిక్షణనివ్వాల్సిందిగా ఆహ్వానించారు.
గ్రంథాలయ సిబ్బందిలో ఒకరైన గోపి మొగిలికి స్ప్రెడ్‌షీట్లలోని కాటలాగ్ వికీ మార్కప్ కోడ్‌లోకి తీసుకురావడానికి ఉపకరించే వెబ్‌సైట్ చూపి శిక్షణను ఇచ్చాం. తద్వారా భావి గ్రంథాలయ సూచికలన్నీ వికీపీడియాలోకి వచ్చేందుకు వీలవుతుంది.
గ్రంథాలయ వ్యవస్థాపకుడు లంకా సూర్యనారాయణ వికీపీడియాలో తమ కాటలాగ్ డిజిటైజ్ చేసి, తద్వారా పరిశోధకులకు గ్రంథాల అందుబాటుకు వీలుకల్పించిన వికీపీడియా వాలంటీర్లను, పాల్గొన్న సంస్థల ఉద్యోగులను ప్రశంసిస్తూ తమ గ్రంథాలయం ద్వారా తెలుగు వికీపీడియా సముదాయ అభివృద్ధికి ఏయే కార్యకలాపాలు చేపట్టవచ్చో ఆలోచించి ప్రతిపాదించమని కోరారు.
ఈ నేపథ్యంలో గుంటూరు సమీపంలోని వీవీఐటీ కళాశాలలో వాడుకరి:KCVelaga పలు కార్యకలాపాలు చేపడతున్నందను, వారి భాగస్వామ్యంతో గుంటూరులో గ్రంథాలయంలో నెలవారీ సమావేశాలు నిర్వహించడం ప్రారంభిద్దామని, గ్రంథాలయంలోని గ్రంథాలు స్కాన్ చేయడంలో వీవీఐటీ వికీ క్లబ్ సభ్యులకు శిక్షణనిచ్చి కాపీహక్కులు లేని గ్రంథాలు కొన్ని వికీమీడియా కామన్స్‌లోకి తీసుకురావచ్చనీ ఆలోచిస్తూ ఆయా ప్రతిపాదనలు గ్రంథాలయం ముందుంచనున్నాం.

ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರಾದ ವಿಕಾಸ್ ಹೆಗಡೆ ಅವರು Wiki Advanced Training 2018ರ ತಮ್ಮ ಅನುಭವ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಿತ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಈ ಬ್ಲಾಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಜಾರ್ಖಂಡ್ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ’ರಾಂಚಿ’ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾದ ’ಮುಂದುವರೆದ ತರಬೇತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಗಾರ’ವನ್ನು (Wikipedia Advanced Training, 2018) ಆಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾ ಒಂದು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ವಿಶ್ವಕೋಶವಾಗಿದ್ದು ನಾನು ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತುಂಬುವ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ವಿಕಿಗೆ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತುಂಬಿಸಲು ಬೇಸಿಕ್ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಎಡಿಟಿಂಗ್ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ ಸಾಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹಾಗೇ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿಯಲು ಮತ್ತು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಉತ್ತಮ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ ಲೇಖನಗಳನ್ನು, ಪುಟಗಳನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಲು ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕುದಾಗಿ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳನ್ನು ತುಂಬಿಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನೇಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಮಟ್ಟದ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಅಥವಾ ಅದನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಅಗತ್ಯ.

ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ ತರಬೇತಿ, ಸಮುದಾಯ ಕಟ್ಟುವಿಕೆ ಮುಂತಾದ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಂಬಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ಫಾರ್ ಇಂಟರ್ನೆಟ್ ಅಂಡ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ-A2K ವಿಭಾಗವು ಈ ಮುಂದುವರೆದ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯ ತರಬೇತಿ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ ತಿಂಗಳು ಘೋಷಣೆ ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಇದು ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನಡೆಯುವ ತರಬೇತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯರನ್ನ ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹಿಂದೆ ಕೆಲಬಾರಿ ಬೇರೆಬೇರೆ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮುಂದುವರೆದ ತರಬೇತಿಗಳು ನಡೆದಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಹ ನನಗೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಆಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಬಾರಿ ತಾರೀಖುಗಳು ಹೊಂದಾಣಿಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಕೂಡ ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದೆ. ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಆಯ್ಕೆಗೆ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾಗೆ ನಾವು ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಕೆಲವು ಮಾನದಂಡಗಳಿದ್ದವು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಮುದಾಯದಿಂದ ನಾನು ಮತ್ತು ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ್ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ಕೆಲದಿನಗಳ ನಂತರ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು.

ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಈ ತರಬೇತಿಯನ್ನು ’ರಾಂಚಿ’ಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸಲು ಕಾರಣವಿತ್ತು. ಮೊದಲನೆಯದಾಗಿ, ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿ, ಭಾರತದ ಉತ್ತಮ ವಿಕಿಮೀಡಿಯನ್ ಎಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ’ಗಂಗಾಧರ ಭದಾನಿ’ಯವರು ರಾಂಚಿಯವರಾಗಿದ್ದು ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಜನವರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಗೌರವಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ರಾಂಚಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯೋಜನೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಎರಡನೆಯದಾಗಿ ಭಾರತದ ಪೂರ್ವಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಕಿಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವೂ ಇತ್ತು. ಜೂನ್ ೨೮ನೇ ತಾರೀಖು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಂದ ಹೊರಟು ರಾಂಚಿಯನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿದೆವು. ವಿಮಾನ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣದಿಂದ ಎಂಟು ಕಿಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ’ಲೇ ಲ್ಯಾಕ್ ಸರೋವರ್ ಪೋರ್ಟಿಕೊ’ ಹೋಟೆಲ್ ತಲುಪಿದೆವು. ತಮಿಳು, ತೆಲುಗು, ಮಲಯಾಳಂ, ಬೆಂಗಾಳಿ, ಹಿಂದಿ, ಮರಾಠಿ, ಪಂಜಾಬಿ, ಗುಜರಾತಿ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ, ಒಡಿಯಾ, ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರೂ ಸೇರಿ ಒಟ್ಟು ಮೂವತ್ತು ಜನ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂದು ಸಂಜೆ ಪೂರ್ವಭಾವಿ ಸೆಶನ್ ಇತ್ತು. ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಪರಿಚಯ, ತರಬೇತಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ, ಕಾರ್ಯಸೂಚಿ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಡಲಾಯಿತು.

ಮಾರನೆಯ ದಿನ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಹತ್ತು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಶುರುವಾದ ತರಬೇತಿಯು ನಡುವಿನ ಚಹಾ ವಿರಾಮ ಮತ್ತು ಊಟದ ವಿರಾಮದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಜೆಯವರೆಗೂ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ವಿಕಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಟೂಲ್ ಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿಕೊಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರು ಅವರ ಭಾಷೆಯ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ, ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಹಿರಿಯ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಗಂಗಾಧರ ಬದಾನಿಯವರ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಸಂಜೆ ಆಹ್ವಾನಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಭದಾನಿಯವರ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಸಭೆ ನಡೆಸಿ ಗೌರವ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷ್ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಮಾಡಿದ ಎಡಿಟ್ ಎಣಿಕೆ ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಮೀರಿದ್ದು ಆ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಕಾಣಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅನೇಕ ಕಿರಿಯ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಗಳನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಯಿತು.

ಮೊದಲ ದಿನದ ತರಬೇತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಯದ ಅಭಾವದಿಂದ ಎರಡ್ಮೂರು ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಹೋದದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅನಂತರದ ದಿನ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಒಂಬತ್ತು ಗಂಟೆಗೇ ಸೇರಿದೆವು. ಅಂದು ಕೂಡ ಹಲವು ತರಬೇತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸೆಶನ್ ಗಳು ನಡೆದವು. ಆಯಾ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರು ತಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಯ ವಿಕಿಗಾಗಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಯಾವ ರೀತಿ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಪ್ರೆಸೆಂಟ್ ಮಾಡಲು ಹೇಳಲಾಯಿತು. ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದಾದ ಯೋಜನೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾವು ಪ್ರೆಸೆಂಟ್ ಮಾಡಿದೆವು. ಕೆಲವು hands on activityಗಳು ನಡೆದವು.

ಕೊನೆಯ ದಿನದ ತರಬೇತಿ ಅರ್ಧ ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಒಂದೆರಡು ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಹಂಚಿಕೆ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಎರಡು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ತರಬೇತಿಯ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮೆಲುಕು, ಬೇಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ, ಮುಂದಿನ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತುಕತೆ, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ, ಹಿನ್ನುಣಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಯಿತು.

ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರು ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ವಾಪಸ್ ಹೊರಟರು. ನಾವು ಕೂಡ ಎರಡು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಹೊರಟು ನಾಲ್ಕೂ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತರ ವಿಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಜೆ ಆರೂವರೆ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ವಿಮಾನ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣ ತಲುಪಿದೆವು. ಭಾರತದ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳ, ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯರೊಡನೆ ಸಂವಾದ, ಹಲವು ಹೊಸ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ಕಲಿತುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ತೆಲುಗು, ತಮಿಳಿನ ಹಿರಿಯ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯನ್ನರ ಭೇಟಿಗಳು ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಅನುಭವ, ಖುಷಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿತು. ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಮೀಡಿಯ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಈ ತರಬೇತಿ ಶಿಬಿರವು ಉತ್ಸಾಹ ತುಂಬಿತು.
