Maps for Making Change - The First Workshop

In this first workshop in a series of three, participants will think through the potential of mapping in the context of a project that they have suggested in their application and the preparations they need to make to make these ideas a reality.

On 3 December, 'Maps for Making Change:
Using Geographical Mapping Techniques to Support Struggles for Social
Justice in India' will officially kick off at the India Islamic
Cultural Centre on Delhi's Lodhi Road. In this first workshop in a
series of three, participants will think through the potential of
mapping in the context of a project that they have suggested in their
application and the preparations they need to make to make these
ideas a reality.

A joint initiative by the Centre for Internet and Society
in Bangalore and the Tactical Tech Collective in Bangalore and the
UK, Maps for Making Change is a two month project that seeks to
explore the potential of digital mapping for social change
specifically in the Indian context. For the first time, activists
and supporters of movements and campaigns working for progressive
social change in the country will get the opportunity to collectively
debate and explore in detail the potential of digital mapping as a
tool to support their work.

The aims of
this first workshop are to:

introduce
	tools and techniques for mapping

assist
participants to identify the information they need to collect for
	their mapping project

By the end
of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

understand
the socio-political context of mapping and how maps can be used to
	maximise advocacy efforts

identify
different types of maps (static, interactive, collaborative, etc)

identify
some of the tools used for creating, uploading and editing maps (not
covering the technical aspects nor the step-by-step process for
making maps, but focusing on the general web-based mapping
	techniques)

understand
	data collection for mapping

The preliminary workshop schedule is as follows:

Mapping Digital Media: Broadcasting, Journalism and Activism in India — A Public Consultation

Alternative Law Forum, Maraa and the Centre for Internet and Society invite you to a public consultation on Mapping Digital Media in India, on October 27, 2013 at the Bangalore International Centre from 10 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Click to download the background note, press invite and press release and the poster of the event.

Here, reputed media lawyers, researchers, journalists, activists and other media professionals will be responding to a recent report that examines the progress of digitisation in India and its impact on media freedom and citizen’s access to quality news and information—the fundamental principles underpinning the Open Society Foundations’ work on media and communications.

Recently, India decided to make digitalise distribution of television signals across India in a phased manner, further contributing to the phenomenon of global digitisation, as citizens enter the fully digital broadcast world. While there may be perceived benefits of the ‘digital switchover’ in terms of freeing up spectrum, increase in quality of signals and so on, the full impact of digitalisation on plurality, diversity, ownership of media and content is yet to be comprehended fully.

Through this public consultation, hosts, Maraa, the Alternative Law Forum (ALF) and the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), hope to shed light on key challenges confronting our emergent digital landscape while incorporating the input of those directly affected by this digitisation, India’s digital consumers, in a widened discussion on the matter. Speakers will directly respond to three sections of the country report – Regulation, Digital Activism and Journalism, and discussions to focus on trends in broadcasting (radio and television), cable operations and newspapers (print & online) as each of these sectors undergo digitalisation.

We would appreciate your participation at this public consultation so that we each may become better informed with regards to India’s digital media landscape and contribute to discussion as we strive to better comprehend the multifaceted picture that is emerging as this media digitisation takes place and look forward to hearing your input.

The India report is available for free download at http://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/reports/mapping-digital-media-india

Join us at the Delhi office of CIS on Thursday, April 4, at 5 pm for a talk by Manuel Beltrán, founder of the Institute of Human Obsolescence (IoHO), which explores the future of labour and the changing relationship between humans and machine. Cartographies of Dispossession (CoD), their current project at IoHO, explores the forms of systematic data dispossession that different humans are subject to, and investigates how data becomes both the means of production as much as the means of governance.

Institute of Human Obsolescence - Cartographies of Dispossession

The Institute of Human Obsolescence (IoHO) explores the future of labour and the changing relationship between humans and machine. Our work develops from a scenario in which forms of manual and intellectual labour traditionally performed by humans are increasingly automated by new technologies. In this context we investigate and challenge the socio-political and economic implications of new forms of labour, such as the production of data. The IoHO developed several projects exploring the production of data as a form of labour, as a different paradigm through which to interrogate and challenge dynamics of ownership over the production of data and the economic and governance objects emerging through it. Previous lines of inquiry around the framework of Data Labour Rights include Data Basic Income, Data Cooperative, Data Production Labour series, Investigative Discussion Sessions and Data Workers Union.

In this talk founder of the IoHO Manuel Beltrán, will introduce the work of the IoHO and discuss their current project Cartographies of Dispossession (CoD). CoD explores the forms of systematic data dispossession that different humans are subject to, and investigates how data becomes both the means of production as much as the means of governance. The project looks at the implications of how the dispossession of data unequally occurs in different contexts, through different means and for different purposes.

Instruments such as the Right Of Access provided by GDPR emerge from a European context but the flows of data operate in a transnational scale. We are exploring the potential and limits of this instrument in combination with others such as the Right To Information in India as tools to investigate and repossess our production of data across borders. We are particularly interested in feedback and discussing in how to think further about this last part.

Manuel Beltrán

Manuel is an artist and activist. He researches and lectures on contemporary art, activism, contemporary social movements, post-digital culture and new media. As an activist, he was involved in the Indignados movement in Spain, the Gezi Park protests in Turkey and several forms of independent activism and cyber-activism in Europe and beyond. In 2012 he co-founded the art collective Plastic Crowds and since 2013 he is head and co-founder of the nomadic school and artistic organization Alternative Learning Tank. In 2015 he founded the Institute of Human Obsolescence, through which he explores the future of labour, the social and political implications regarding our relationship with technology and the economic and governance systems surrounding the production of data.

Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath was first established as “Chitrakala Vidyalaya”, under the aegis of Chitrakala Parishath in 1964. The founder secretary Late Prof. M.S. Nanjunda Rao was instrumental in establishing and developing the institute, which has grown to the current international status. The Institution offers Post- Graduate and Post- Diploma courses, and proposes to begin a PhD programme [Research Centre] in the near future. Presently the Institution has been accredited and functioning as an Autonomous Institution as set by the U.G.C. and Bangalore University.

What is GLAM and what does it have to do with Wikimedia and Creative Commons?

GLAM is an acronym for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums. It also incorporates other cultural institutions such as theatres, zoos, botanical gardens, public broadcasters, etc.

The GLAM-WIKI project supports GLAMs and other institutions who want to work with Wikimedia to produce open-access, freely-reusable content for the public.

Why contribute?

Every cultural institution has an abundance of resources to share. A partnership with Wikimedia is a low cost, high-impact way for them to disseminate their resources to a global audience.

How to contribute?

Wikipedia - Contributions can include article creation or expansion, reference correction and expansion, and institutional research/text donations.

Wikimedia Commons - Contributions can include images, video, and other media as well as descriptions and metadata for already-existing files in the repository.

Wikisource - As a collection of free and open content texts of original sources, appropriate contributions include out-of-copyright books and documents.

How does it help the GLAM institution?

Here are a few reasons:

It fits in closely with the core mission of the cultural institution of preserving heritage and history.

It step jumps the GLAM institution’s reach by increasing potential audiences.

Footfalls to the GLAM institution are likely to increase through greater awareness of the institute’s collection and knowledge.

It will provide a well-tested platform for the digitization efforts of the GLAM institution. Staff will find it satisfying given its global reach and impact.

There is a strong likelihood of higher public relations coverage of the GLAM institute because of Wikipedia’s goodwill.

Wikimedia Foundation and Creative Commons are nonprofit organizations.

Different GLAMs have different needs and goals for their projects, and this seminar will educate the audience on how GLAM-WIKI fits these with Wikimedia's goals of free knowledge. From existing partnership programs Wikimedia India will present a few global projects, and examples on how they've worked in practice and benefited every one including the GLAM institutions.

Creative Commons

Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables users to share their knowledge and creativity through free legal tools. They develop, support, and steward legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation.

Copyright laws were developed in a previous era where in protection was given to artists, authors, and other creators as a default. In this situation sharing requires a deliberate prior permission. In the internet era, so much of sharing of digital media is happening online, and these require tools that ensure prior permission, and control the level of use. The legal tools of Creative Commons enable controlled sharing.

Creative Commons licenses are not an alternative to copyright. They work alongside copyright and enable users to modify their copyright terms to best suit their needs.

What will users learn?

In this part of the seminar users will learn about:

Creative Commons as an organization

How the Creative Commons licenses work

How they relate to Open GLAM, and Wikimedia

What are the tools? How to choose them and use them

How can people selectively retain rights, while releasing some of it for free public use

Examples of how GLAM institutions are using CC

New business models and online communities

Other applications of CC

The speakers from Creative Commons have a long experience of discussing CC with GLAM institutions.

CC licensing also works for many other applications such as music, video, writing, and many other creative works. Open Education Resources, and Public Data are also some of the domains. The focus of the presentation will be on GLAM. However, people interested in other applications may also be able to take the opportunity to have discussions after the main presentation.

Who should attend the seminar?

The seminar would be of interests to:

Administrators of Public policy

Administrators of GLAM institutions

Art historians, Artists, Photographers, and Sculptors

Legal professionals

Bloggers, Authors, Editors, and Publishers.

Admission:

Admission is free to the public who register. Please bring a print copy of this registration page for admission.

IOCOSE's talk at CIS

Please join us at the Centre for Internet and Society in Bangalore on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at 7 p.m. for a presentation of the work of the artists group IOCOSE, current artists in residence at T.A.J./SKE Residency.

What is the life of a drone 'in times of peace'? What are the creative potential of a drone? Drones do not have such a thing as a ‘life’. But what if?

The title of our project, 'In Times of Peace' refers to Paul Virilio's theory of logistics (Pure War, 1983).

Quoting an article published by the Pentagon in late '40s, the theorist highlighted the fact that the text presented logistics as the procedure for which the potential of a nation lies in its armed forces, 'in times of peace' as in times of war.

But what does it mean to live 'in times of peace'? And what does this mean for a drone?”

The talk will open with the announcement of the winner of the NoTube Contest 2014 which will be held at the Sree Venkateshwara Cyber Cafe in Bangalore on the very same day.

IOCOSE

IOCOSE is a collective of four artists who has been working in Italy and Europe since 2006. It organises actions in order to subvert ideologies, practices and processes of identification and production of meanings. It uses pranks and hoaxes as tactical means, as joyful and sound tools. IOCOSE thinks about the streets, internet and word of mouth as a battlefield. Tactics such as mimesis and trickery are used to lead and delude the audience into a semantic pitfall. IOCOSE’s work has been shown internationally, such as at Jeu de Paume (Paris, France; 2011); Tate Modern (London, UK; 2011), Festival Nrmal, (Monterrey, Mexico; 2011); Furtherfield Gallery (London, UK; 2012); Venice Biennal (Italy; 2011), Macro (Rome, Italy; 2012); CLICK Festival (Helsingor, Denmark; 2013); Science gallery (Dublin, Ireland, 2012), http://www.iocose.org

T.A.J. RESIDENCY & SKE PROJECTS is a residency program established in 2013 as a collaborative project between a visual artist and a gallerist. Intended as an interdisciplinary residency, it has already hosted visual artists, curators, academics, scientists, fiction writers and journalists. There is always one visual artist in residence. The residency program is also open to applicants from the fields of architecture, design, music, film, performing arts and education, http://t-a-j.in
