&lt;p&gt;The purpose of this book is to find “exciting ways to socialize young people to very real issues”, rewrite human rights in a “simple,accessible form” and stimulate imagination to “observe and absorb details in a way that words struggle to express”. While specifically targeted for 12+ children, these images create associations and connections that trump the dullness of black and white texts for any audience; offering an alternative way of presenting complex bodies of knowledge crucial for our survival, such as  the Declaration of Human Rights.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;div style="text-align: left;" class="pullquote" dir="ltr"&gt;Change: information interventions to inspire and facilitate change-making among civil society networks.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;In  the same spirit, Tactical Technology aims to use information design  strategies to create similar associations in the field of activism. The &lt;a href="https://www.tacticaltech.org/"&gt;Tactical Technology Collective&lt;/a&gt; is an organization dedicated to the intersections of data, design and technology in campaigning. Its has two main programs:&lt;a href="https://www.tacticaltech.org/#evidence-and-action"&gt; Evidence &amp;amp; Action&lt;/a&gt; that works with data management in digital campaigning; and &lt;a href="https://www.tacticaltech.org/#privacy-and-expression"&gt;Privacy &amp;amp; Expression&lt;/a&gt; that provides digital security and privacysupport advice to activists.  The collective envisions change as a creative and pragmatic  intervention that inspires and facilitates change-making among civil  society networks. We interviewed Maya Ganesh, who is part of the E&amp;amp;A  program, and our conversation shed light on benefits and the challenges  of using visual advocacy strategies to create social change.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;On  this opportunity, I will explore the potential of information activism to create opportunities and spaces of engagement. Following  Saussure’s dyadic model of the sign, it will be split in two parts. The  first entry will look at the ‘signified’: the ideas, associations and cultural  conventions derived from information and how these could solve crises  of civic engagement and citizen action. The second entry will look at the  ‘signifier’ -the shapes and sequences that compose the knowledges  navigating political activism. These will be viewed from the strategic,  design and technological point of view. Both parts will be informed by  our conversation with Maya and complemented by literature on political  engagement in the digital age. On a less academic note, the posts will  also refer to the experience of graphic designers, artists and bloggers  who are experimenting with information design to express dissent in  transnational platforms.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 dir="ltr"&gt;Part 1: Is Information Power?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;‘Transforming  Information into Action’ is Tactical Technology’s take on the  traditional idiom ‘Knowledge is Power’. The collective’s experience  shows there are a number of steps to transform raw data into  political power and for the purpose of this analysis, I will only look  at information disseminated with this particular intention. This will  aid to understand the relationship between increasing  information availability and having it trigger civic action in contemporary activism. According to Fowler and Biekart, acts  of public disobedience and activism after 2010 share the objective of  reclaiming active citizenship through ‘novel ways’ that counter  traditional political participation mechanisms (2013). Hence, we want to  know if information activism is one of these ‘novel’ strategies  enabling citizenship in the digital era.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;More power to whom?&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Overcoming information inequity&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If  information activism is “the strategic and deliberate use of  information within a campaign”, the first step is to question the type of  information used in these campaigns. While many scholars claim that  access to political opinion increases participation in the democratic process by fostering debate and inclusive deliberation on policy issues (Dahl, 1989, Bennett, 2003,  2008; Montgomery et al. 2004,) Brundidge and Rice’s exploration of Internet politics shows that strategies that  merely increase access to information are flawed by design. They claim that increasing information mainly benefits the middle class, who counts with  previous exposure to political knowledge and hence processes it with greater  ease. This group ultimately dominates the public discourse widening -what they call-  the ‘knowledge gap’ between socioeconomic classes (Brunridge and Rice, 2009, Bimber et al. 2005). This  is the ‘information’ version of the gentrification of politics explored by Shah  in the &lt;a href="http:http:/cis-india.org/digital-natives/blog/hivos-knowledge-programme-june-14-2013-nishant-shah-whose-change-is-it-anyway"&gt;Whose Change is it Anyway&lt;/a&gt; thought piece, and a definite deterrent of collective action at the  grassroots level.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;A basic example to show how this manifests in the information environment is this info-graphic on &lt;a href="http://www.2012socialactivism.com/"&gt;Social Activism&lt;/a&gt; created by &lt;a href="http://www.columnfivemedia.com/"&gt;Column Five&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.takepart.com/"&gt;Take Part&lt;/a&gt; and presenting the findings on their 2010 study on Social responsibility:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;pre&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Example 1:

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;The information is clear, the presentation is clean. This graphic could  mobilize the middle class citizen who works in a company and &amp;nbsp;has time  and money to spare in donations and fund-raising activities. The graphic  is informational yet it does not offer alternative participation avenues  for groups outside of the politically savvy, young, educated and  affluent circle (Brundidge and Rice, 2009) Instead, it reiterates  socioeconomic inequalities from the offline community into the  information landscape. With this in mind we asked Maya whether  gentrification was a barrier for info-activism interventions at the  grassroots:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MG&lt;/strong&gt;: The  things we are documenting are by citizens with socioeconomic barriers  and obstacles. It is not our mandate to reach out to the ‘common  citizen’ but it is very much our mandate to look at what is happening  and what is happening to people with socioeconomic barriers who are  lower on the ladder. &amp;nbsp;If you look at &lt;a href="https://tacticaltech.org/first-look-syrian-info-activism"&gt;Syrian info-activism&lt;/a&gt;, these are people facing the worst situations you can imagine, and they are doing it [...] and we document what they are doing, trying to understand it, pull out trends and then showing people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;h3 id="docs-internal-guid-55c9389d-2e66-a4f1-cb32-393bdd9637f0" style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;h3 id="docs-internal-guid-55c9389d-2e66-a4f1-cb32-393bdd9637f0" style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;Empowering information communities&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Offline networks support information dissemination&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In  this respect, offline community networks are key to bridging the  knowledge gap cited above. The relationship between organizations like  Dawlaty, SMEX and Alt City and groups in the Arab region function as a  core of ideas and resources from which localized methods and solutions  emerge (read more &lt;a href="https://www.tacticaltech.org/info-activism-resources-localised-and-arab-world"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;).  This flow of information, coupled with the offline support, makes  information from less visible demographics visible, deepens democracy  and creates opportunities for these actors to participate and set the  public agenda (2009). We asked Maya in what other ways information  activism facilitates this process:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MG&lt;/strong&gt;: We have moved on a lot from information activism. &lt;a href="https://informationactivism.org/en"&gt;10 Tactics&lt;/a&gt; is quite old for us now but it is still interesting to see how this  stuff works. This material was produced in 2008-9 and is very popular  with our audience. A lot of our work now is [...] take this material to  newer communities of activists or people who have been around for a long  time but are getting involved with the digital for the first time.  That’s one part of our work and it’s sort of self-sustainable that way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;Therefore  the value of information activism, rather than increasing the quantity  of available data, is how it enables diversity and visibility of  political opinion in the public sphere. One of the better known examples  of information design interventions that gloat inclusiveness is:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p align="justify"&gt;By presenting income and unemployment statistics about the American middle and lower class in the public space, activists from Occupy Design made the claims of the Occupy Wall Street Movement visual and visible. This enabled this group, the 99%, to reclaim the space not only through physical mobilization but also through the expression of subjectivities and open -graphic- power contestation. According to Pleyers, the pervasiveness of the movement both at the offline, online -and in this  case, visual- levels created opportunities of horizontal participation,  asserting spaces of democratic experience (2012).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;From Information to Action&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Is information enough?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nevertheless,  exposure to powerful images does not necessarily guarantee impact and  influence, much less civic engagement. We asked Maya what she thought  motivated civic action:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;strong&gt; MG: &lt;/strong&gt;External  things push you over the edge. A flash-point issue could tip you over to  do something different, even if you are that someone that has never  been involved in anything. The gang rape in Delhi for example: it has  sparked a lot of people who have never been involved and are now pushed  to [act]. There are different precipitating factors and that’s why the  stories of people: what people do, how they do it and why they do it, matters.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;Whether  it is ‘external things’, a ‘flash-point issue’ or ‘precipitating  factors’; the individual must make a connection between new events and  how they affect the current status quo. A set of critical skills must be  in place, as well as a desire to participate in civic life. (Brundidge  and Rice 2009, as well as Montgomery et al. 2004) Richard Wurman, the  american graphic designer, refers to this in his book ‘Information  Anxiety’. He posits that there is an ‘ever-widening gap’; a ‘black hole’  between data and knowledge that limits our ability to make sense of  information; even if it is vital for our context and survival. “The  opportunity is that there is so much information; the catastrophe is  that 99 percent of it isn’t meaningful or understandable” (Wurman  et. al 2001)&amp;nbsp; How do we reconcile this challenge with Tactical  Technology’s mandate? What is the turning point between exposure to  information and engagement in civic action?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" dir="ltr"&gt;In  this post two issues behind information dissemination have been  explored:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The risk of creating homogeneous political  discussions by catering only to middle class’ interests;  overlooking diversity of political expression in the public discourse. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The need for offline communities to facilitate information  dissemination on the ground and mainstream the technical and  financial support offered by collectives such as Tactical Technology. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;" class="callout"&gt;The next question is how info-activism creates the connections between  data and information to trigger civic engagement, and on this note, we  proceed to analyse the role of the ‘signifier’ in information  dissemination on the next post. Part two post will look at the strategy,  design and technology behind the symbols and sequences of information,  and how these determine the citizen’s perception of its ability to  create change.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>In Search of the Other: Decoding Digital Natives</title>

        &lt;b&gt;This is the first post of a research inquiry that questions the ways in which we have understood the Youth-Technology-Change relationship in the contemporary digital world, especially through the identity of ‘Digital Native’. Drawing from three years of research and current engagements in the field, the post begins a critique of how we need to look at the outliers, the people on the fringes in order to unravel the otherwise celebratory nature of discourse about how the digital is changing the world.&lt;/b&gt;
        
&lt;p&gt;In this first post, I chart the trajectories of our research at the Centre for Internet and Society (Bangalore, India) and Hivos (The Hague, The Netherlands) to see how alternative models of understanding these relationships can be built.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Digital Native has many different imaginations. From the short hand understanding of ‘anybody who is born after the 1980s’ (Prensky, 2001) to more nuanced definitions of populations who are ‘born digital’ (Palfrey &amp;amp; Gasser, 2008), the digital native has firmly been ensconced in our visions of technology futures. From DIY decentralized learning environments to viral and networked forms of engagements that span from the Arab Spring to Occupy Together, the Digital Native – somebody who has grown up with digital technologies (and the skills to negotiate with them) as the default mode of being – has become central to how we see usage and proliferation of new digital tools and technologies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Three years ago, when the identity Digital Native was already in currency but before the overwhelming examples that are now so easily available in the post MENA (Middle East-North Africa) world, we asked ourselves the question: “What does a Digital Native look like?” When we started sifting through the literature (published and grey), practice-based discourse and policy, we started spotting certain patterns: Digital Natives were almost always young, white, (largely male) middle class, affluent, English speaking populations who could afford education and were located in developed Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) contexts of ubiquitous connectivity. These users of technology were treated as the proto-type around which digital natives in the ‘rest of the world’ were imagined. The ‘rest of the world’ was not necessarily an exotic geography elsewhere, but often was a person whose relationships with the digital were impeded by class, education, gender, sexuality, literacy etc.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Moreover, we found that the accounts of Digital Natives that were being discussed across the board were accounts of super stars. They either heralded the digital native as the young messiah who is drastically changing the world, overthrowing governments and building collaborative and participatory structures of openness. Or they feared the digital native as an unthinking, self contained, dysfunctional person who pirates and plagiarizes and needs to be rehabilitated into becoming a civic individual. Very little was said about Everyday Digital Natives – users who, through the presence of digital technologies, were changing their lives on an everyday basis.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Other Digital Natives&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Based on this, we began the quest for the Other Digital Natives – people who did not necessarily fit the existing models of being digital but who often had to strive to ‘Become Digital’ and in the process produce possibilities and potentials for social change and political participation in their immediate environments. This was the first step to discover what being a digital native would be in emerging ICT contexts, where connectivity, access, usage, affordability, geo-political regulation, and questions of the biological and of living would give us new understandings of what a digital native is. This quest for the Other inspired us to work across Asia, Africa and Latin America, to talk to some of the most strident voices in the region who claimed to be digital natives, expressed discomfort with being called digital natives, refused to be called digital natives, and sought to provide critique of the existing expectations of digital nativity. The proceedings from these conversations in the Global South have been consolidated in the book Digital AlterNatives With a Cause? available for free download.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For this post, I want to look at some of the presumptions in existing understanding of Digital Natives and how we can contest them to build Digital AlterNative identities.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Presumption 1: Digital Natives are always young&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Even if we go by Mark Prensky’s problematic definition that everybody born after the 1980s is a digital native, we must realize that there is a large chunk of digital native users who are now in their thirties. They are in universities, work forces, governments and offices. They have not only grown older with technologies but they have also radically changed the technologies and tech platforms that they inhabit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is time to let go of the Peter-Pan imagination of a Digital Native as always perpetually young. Moreover, we must realize that digital natives existed even before the name ‘Digital Native’ came into existence. There were people who built internets, who might not have been young but were still native to the digital environments that they were a part of.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Instead of looking at a youth-centric, age-based exclusive definition of a digital native, it is more fruitful to say that people who natively interact with digital technologies – people who are able to inhabit the remix, reuse, share cultures that digitality produces, might be marked as digital AlterNatives.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Presumption 2: Digital Natives are born digital&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It does sound nice – the idea that there were people who were born as preconfigured cyborgs, interacting with interfaces from the minute they were born. And yet, we know that people are taught to interact with technologies. True, technologies often define our own conceptions of who we are and how we perceive the world around us, but there is still a learning curve that is endemic to human technology relationships.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Because of the ubiquitous and pervasive nature of certain kinds of technology mediated interaction, it is sometimes difficult to look at our habits of technology as learned interactions. Recognizing that there is a thrust, an effort and an incentive produced for people to Become Digital, is also to recognize that there are different actors, players, promoters and teachers who help young people enter into relationships with technologies, which can often be greater than the first interactions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Presumption 3: Digital Natives live digital lives&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is a concern voiced by many people who talk about digital natives. They are posited as slacktivists – removed from their material realities and apathetic to the physical world around them. They are painted as dysfunctional screenagers who are unable to sustain the fabric of social interaction and community formation outside of social networking systems. They are discussed as a teenage mutant nightmare that unfolds almost entirely in the domains of the digital.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But these kinds of imaginations forget that a digital native is not primarily a digital native, or at least, not exclusively digital. Being a digital native is one of many identities these users appropriate. The digital often serves as a lens that informs all their other socio-cultural and political interactions, but it is not an all-containing system. The bodies that click on ‘Like’ buttons on Facebook are also often the bodies that fill up the streets to fight for their rights. The division between Physical Reality and Virtual Reality needs to be dismissed to build more comprehensive accounts of digital native practices.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Presumption 4: Connectivity is digitality&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is often an easy conflation. It is presumed that once one has constant connectivity, one will automatically become a digital native. Especially in policy and development based approaches, connectivity and access have become the buzzwords by which the digital divide can be breached. However, we have now learned that this one-size, fits-all solution actually fits nobody. Being connected – by building infrastructure and affording gadgets – does not make somebody a digital native.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The digital native identity needs to be more than mere access to the digital. It involves agency, choice, critical literacy and fluency with the digital media that we live with. So instead of thinking of anybody who is connected as a digital native, we are looking at people who are strategically able to harness the powers of the digital to produce a change in their immediate environments. These changes can range from making personal collections of media to mobilising large numbers of people for political protests. To be digital is to be intimately connected with the technologies so that they can augment and amplify the ways in which we respond to the world around us.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I offer these as the building blocks of looking at the ‘Other’ of the Digital Natives as we have discursively produced them. From hereon, in my subsequent posts, I hope to drill deeper to locate nuances and differences, concepts and frameworks that we need to map in order to build a digital native model that is inclusive, differential and context based.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Review of Digital AlterNatives with a Cause? edited by Nishant Shah &amp;amp; Fieke Jansen, Bangalore: Centre for Internet and Society/The Hague: Hivos Knowledge Programme, 2011:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Digital AlterNatives with a Cause? (2011) is the product of a series of workshops held in 2010-11 in Taiwan, South Africa and Chile. The aim was to bring together a different cohort of ‘digital natives’ than that which had hitherto been assumed in the popular and academic literature, namely white, highly educated, (mostly) male elites largely to be found on and around US university campuses. The workshops brought together 80 people who identified themselves as ‘digital natives’ but with very different backgrounds, and who came from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The four booklets which have been produced on the themes of ‘To Be’, ‘To Think’, ‘To Act’ and ‘To Connect’ provide many fascinating and thought-provoking insights into the possibilities for reflection, action and interaction available to this group.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In my review, I focus on the editorial comments provided by Nishant Shah and Fieke Jansen in the Preface, the Introduction, and the sidebar text running alongside most of Book One, &lt;em&gt;To Be&lt;/em&gt;, in which they provide the context for the workshops and the books, and in which they reflect on the concept of ‘digital native’. Shah and Jansen recognise many of the limits of the concept of ‘digital native’, and reflect upon those limits and possible alternatives. They and the contributors keep the term, while at the same time challenging it, refining it and reclaiming it. It is to this ongoing process of reflection and definition that I would like to contribute, and I do so by thinking about my own position as a user and an analyst of digital technologies and as a Canadian-born child of immigrants.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I was born in 1959 so there is no chance of me being mistaken for a ‘digital native’ (often defined as someone born after 1980). Yet I was programming when I was a student in the late 1970s, and I have lived in a house with a computer in it since 1984, though I didn’t acquire home internet access until 2002, relatively late for a person living in north-western Europe with my income and occupation. One feature of this life, not at all untypical for someone of my age and background, is that I experienced digital technology before it was black-boxed, when to operate a home computer required a certain level of engineering skill, and when the sleekness of today’s devices was still a dream. Maybe I am what the editors refer to (ironically and with affection they claim) as a ‘digital dinosaur’ (p.15). I would never claim to have been part of the cohort who created the internet, though maybe I am part of the group of social scientists who began analysing the social aspects of digital technologies, in both their production and their use, sooner rather than later.&lt;a name="fr1" href="#fn1"&gt;[1]&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I’m also of a generation deeply affected by second-wave feminism. One of the most important books for us was The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, in which she wrote, ‘One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman’ (1949, p.267). This sentence, reproduced on countless posters, coffee mugs and t-shirts, neatly encapsulates the idea that gender is socially constructed, that there is nothing essential about the category of ‘woman’, nor of any other category. I would like to suggest that it also applies to digital natives – they are not born, they are made. Just because processes of socialisation are subtle and powerful, and one no longer has to poke the mother board with a paper clip to make the computer work, it does not mean that digital natives arrive fully formed as such in the world, nor that the identity will remain stable over time for them individually or as a group.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I read these volumes while in Canada in early 2012. I was born and grew up in Canada, though I have lived in Europe for all of my adult life. Canada and other settler societies use ‘native’ differently from Europeans. It was a term often used by colonisers to describe Indigenous communities such as the First Nations people in Canada, Aboriginal people in Australia, or the Māori in New Zealand. ‘Natives’ were not respected by the colonisers, and these groups continue to suffer disadvantage and discrimination. Moreover, the term ‘native’ is not used by Indigenous communities to describe themselves.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And because ‘native’ has different connotations, so does ‘immigrant’. I have lived for the past decade in the Netherlands, where to be an ‘immigrant’ is not comfortable, as attitudes and policies towards immigrants have become harsher, and the official definition of ‘native’ more exclusive. It is different in Canada, where the state of being an immigrant is almost the norm. Most people (except the First Nations people) are immigrants themselves, or have immigrants in their not too distant family histories. Canadians are comfortable with hybrid identities – there are not only French Canadians, but also Chinese Canadians, Greek Canadians and Chilean Canadians. I attended an international sporting event while visiting, and many of the spectators brought two flags with them to wave, depending on who was competing; or they had superimposed the maple leaf (the symbol of Canada that appears in the middle of the national flag) onto the flag of another country. There are many advantages to being an immigrant, apart from a wider choice of sporting heroes. One is that we know that identity is performance. Immigrants are constantly ‘becoming’ - legally, bureaucratically, linguistically and culturally.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Another advantage of being an immigrant comes from understanding the possibilities for re-invention. Many immigrants come for the promise of a better life for themselves and their children. It can be difficult and painful, but also exhilarating to start a new life, without the baggage of the past, whether one’s own youthful indiscretions or the burdens of expectation of the ‘old country’.&amp;nbsp; I wonder whether ‘digital natives’ will ever experience the excitement of a new start. What will happen when they reach middle age, and the digital traces they have been creating since childhood cannot be erased and continue to follow them wherever they go? How will they cope when a younger generation arrives with a newer technology offering other possibilities for social transformation, because we can be certain that there will be newer technologies and that they will be accompanied by promises of social change?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is too easy to assume that ‘native’ is a superior identity position to ‘immigrant’, or that natives always have advantages compared to immigrants because of their greater familiarity with the norms and codes of a way of life, digital or otherwise. In this volume, the project of reclaiming and expanding the reach of ‘digital native’ suggests that the editors and contributors see it as the preferred identity. Both ‘native’ and ‘immigrant’ are constructed categories, but ‘immigrant’ (from my particular historically located subject position) often feels like a more dynamic and reflexive identity position.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I will conclude by further performing my middle-aged curmudgeonly identity (and it is somewhat frightening how quickly one can slip into this as one passes 50). On many occasions in recent years, I have heard digital natives say – without shame – that they do not read anything that is not available online. Sometimes this is for understandable reasons, such as the cost and scarcity of printed versions, especially in countries where the workshops were held. But sometimes they seem genuinely unaware that many books and sources are not available digitally. One problem with only reading material that is born digital or has been digitised (sometimes badly) is that one becomes desensitised to grammatical niceties. Nishant Shah and Fieke Jansen are the editors of these four volumes, and an executive editor is listed in the colophon. I am reluctant to criticise people who might not be native speakers of English, but there is at least one language mistake in almost every paragraph. The paper books of Digital (Alter)Natives with a Cause? are beautifully designed and produced. The production values of this project were high. It is unfortunate that more effort was not expended in language editing. Copy editors are in danger of suffering the same fate as the bison of the Great Plains, but this time not at the hands of settlers but at the hands and keyboards of digital natives.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>i4D Interview: Social Networking and Internet Access</title>

&lt;h3 align="left"&gt;Mechanism of Self-Governance Needed for Social Networks&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;h3 align="left"&gt;Should social networking sites be governed, and if yes, in what way?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;img src="https://cis-india.org/internet-governance/blog/uploads/nishantshah1.gif/image_preview" alt="Nishant Shah" class="image-left" title="Nishant Shah" /&gt;A
call for either monitoring or censoring Social Networking Sites has
long been proved ineffectual, with the users always finding new ways of
circumventing the bans or the blocks that are put into place. However,
given the ubiquitous nature of SNS and the varied age-groups and
interests that are represented there, governance, which is
non-intrusive and actually enables&amp;nbsp; a better and more
effective experience of the site, is always welcome. The presumed
notion of governance is that it will set processes and procedures in
place which will eventually crystallise into laws or regulations.
However, there is also another form of governance - governance as
provided by a safe-keeper or a guardian, somebody who creates symbols
of caution and warns us about being cautious in certain areas. In the
physical world, we constantly face these symbols and signs which remind
us of the need to be aware and safe. Creation of a vocabulary of
warnings, signs and symbols that remind us of the dangers within SNS is
a form of governance that needs to be worked out. This can be a
participatory governance where each community develops its own concerns
and addresses them. What is needed is a way of making sure that these
signs are present and garner the attention of the user.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How do we address the concerns that some of the social networking spaces are not "child safe"?&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;The
question of child safety online has resulted in a raging debate. Several models, from the cybernanny to monitoring the child's
activities online ,have been suggested at different times and have
more or less failed. The concerns about what happens to a child online are
the same as those about what happens to a child in the physical world.
When the child goes off to school, or to the park to play, we train and
educate them about things that they should not be doing -- suggesting that they do not talk
to strangers, do not take sweets from strangers, do not tell people
where they live, don't wander off alone -- and hope that these will be
sufficient safeguards to their well being. As an added precaution, we
also sometimes supervise their activities and their media consumption. More than finding technical solutions for
safety online, it is a question of education and training and
some amount of supervision to ensure that the child is complying with
your idea of what is good for it. A call for sanitising the internet is more or less redundant, only, in fact,
adding to the dark glamour of the web and inciting younger users to go
and search for material which they would otherwise have ignored.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What are the issues, especially around identities and profile information privacy rights of users of social networking sites?&lt;/strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;The
main set of issues, as I see it, around the question of identities, is
the mapping of the digital identities to the physical selves. The
questions would be : What constitutes the authentic self?&amp;nbsp; What is the
responsibility of the digital persona? Are we looking at a post-human
world where&amp;nbsp; online identities are equally a part of who we are and are sometimes even more a part of who we are than our physical selves? Does the older argument of the Original
and the Primary (characteristics of Representation aesthetics) still
work when we are talking about a world of 'perfect copies' and
'interminable networks of selves' (characteristics of Simulation)? How
do we create new models of verification, trust and networking within an SNS? Sites like Facebook and Orkut, with their ability to establish
looped relationships between the users, and with the notion of inheritance (¨friend of a friend of a friend of a friend¨), or even testimonials and
open 'walls' and 'scraps' for messaging, are already approaching these
new models of trust and friendship.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How do we strike a balance between the freedom of speech and the need to maintain law and order when it comes to monitoring social networking sites?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;I
am not sure if the 'freedom of speech and expression' and the
'maintaining of law and order' need to be posited as antithetical to each
other. Surely the whole idea of 'maintaining law and order' already
includes maintaining conditions within which freedom of speech and
expression can be practiced. Instead of monitoring social networking
sites to censor and chastise (as has happened in some of the recent
debates around Orkut, for example), it is a more fruitful exercise to
ensure that speech, as long as it is not directed offensively
towards an individual or a community, needs to be registered and heard.
Hate speech of any sort should not be tolerated but that is a fact
that is already covered by the judicial systems around the world.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p align="justify"&gt;What
perhaps, is needed online, is a mechanism of self-governance where the
community should be able to decide the kinds of actions and speech
which are valid and acceptable to them. People who enter into trollish
behaviour or hate speak, automatically get chastised and punished in
different ways by the community itself. To look at models of better
self-governance and community mobilisation might be more productive
than producing this schism between freedom of speech on the one hand
and the maintenance of law and order on the other.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>I Believe that .......... should be a Right in the Digital Age</title>

        &lt;b&gt;On Monday March 21, 2011, people from three continents blogged about what they believe will/should/are rights in the digital age, as part of the "Digital Natives with a Cause?" project. From "free music" to "many identities", people have a varied and rich set of beliefs of what should constitute a right. &lt;/b&gt;
        
&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What do you think should be a right in the digital age?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the question which community members, facilitators and
organizers of the “Digital Natives with a Cause?” project asked themselves on
Monday, 21&amp;nbsp;March 2011.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Juan-Manuel Casanueva, a facilitator at the
workshop in Chile, talks about the &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/jmcasanueva/blogs/right-be-read-and-heard-anyone"&gt;right to be heard and read by anyone&lt;/a&gt;. Juan
Manuel sets up a historical picture, explaining that the quest for global
dialogue advanced tremendously with the implementation of the Internet.
Early proponents of the Internet spoke of a world where people, enabled by the
technology, would communicate with each other seamlessly. Casanueva explains that this
is not the case; roughly 30 years after the Internet began people are still
using the Internet as an extension of their community-based communication
model. Now that the hardware is there, it is time to start questioning the
other and possibly more subtle aspects of global communication like the
linguistics and social attitudes…&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;But of
course, how could we all communicate if not all of us have access yet?&amp;nbsp; This is an issue that Nilofar, a participant of
the workshop in Taipei, and &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/fernandatusa/blogs/i-believe-come-you-inside-you-0"&gt;Fernanda&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;another participant&amp;nbsp;from Ecuador explores more in depth in their
post. &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/nilofar/blogs/rights-digital-age-freedom-access"&gt;The right to access information freely and universally&lt;/a&gt; is one which Nilofar advocates be expanded beyond those with disability to include “your friend,
neighbour or the needy nerd?” This way, access will not only be provided to
those below the poverty line, but for those who already enjoy access, it won’t
continue to be politicized, corrupted, commoditized and in general
under-utilized.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Paidamoyo also talks about access,
specifically &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/paida/blogs/women-access-new-ict-should-be-right"&gt;access by women&lt;/a&gt;. He describes the emergence of digital
technologies as being crucial to the enlargement of the gap between men and
women, simply because men enjoyed more access. Today, women have been left
outside of the technology revolution, which is a huge problem since 52 per cent of the
world’s population consists of women.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To properly access all of the wonders that the world of Internet offers we need to know how to physically operate a computer,
but there are a series of more intangible skills needed. Simeon, a participant
from the workshop in Johannesburg proposes that &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/mtotowajirani/blogs/theres-more-digital-literacy-just-mere-skills-right-digital-literacy"&gt;being digitally literate&lt;/a&gt; should
be a right in the information age. What does he mean by being literate? Well, Simeon
explains that “digital” is more of a mindset than a condition: it is an
approach to life and not a method.&amp;nbsp; “A
number of people may have access to digital tools and technology but very few
will get the opportunity to learn the techniques needed to maximize their
investment on digital tools” he says, and it is as useful or sometimes more to
teach people about the value and the potential uses of digital technologies
than the mere skill.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now, what do we
do with all the information once we have accessed it? Jenny from Costa Rica
believes &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/jencg/blogs/sharing-caring-right-share"&gt;we should share it&lt;/a&gt;. Spreading the digital love should be a right
according to her, because sharing is analogous to growing: a process which
makes us better. “we are entitled to share.&amp;nbsp; We like to share our opinions, our
work, to share questions and even complaints. &amp;nbsp;It is a natural response,
an impulse, you may think” &amp;nbsp;She mentions platforms like bandcamp where
musicians can upload their music and share it for free, and Creative Commons
licenses which allow for legal ways of collaborating while maintaining
authorship rights. But what happens when the information online is restricted
and modifying it or sharing it is illegal? Adolfo from Nicaragua believes we
all have &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/fitoria/blogs/i-believe-we-have-right-hack"&gt;the right to hack!&lt;/a&gt; Adolfo explains that nowadays “hacking” has
negative overtones, but that the origins of the word simply refer to someone
who modified trains for better performance or appeal. Adolfo believes that if
he pays for something, he has the right to modify it, change it, tweak it, add
to it, remove from it, and deface it in any way he wants. Adolfo and Shehla
from India would get along very well, because Shehla believes &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/shehla/blogs/i-believe-free-music-should-be-right-digital-age"&gt;free music&lt;/a&gt; should
be a right in the digital age. What is stealing? Are we reaching a point where
illegally downloading music is not morally incorrect? “(most
people) would never think of stealing a CD from a store (or at least not that
easily). So what exactly is stealing? And more so, in the online world? It’s as
easy as the click of a button… can’t be that bad”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Still, not everyone advocated for increasing
access, Fieke from Hivos in the Netherlands believes that &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/fieke/blogs/right-unplug"&gt;being able to unplug&lt;/a&gt;
is a right. Fieke tells of how she lives a technologically savvy life, having a
presence on Facebook, Twitter and other social media, answering emails for the better
part of the day, but she does enjoy being able to turn off her cellphone and
enjoy the sun on a clear day. Are we losing our ability to do that? When you
send an sms message, do you expect the person to answer immediately? What kind
of pressure does this put us under? It might not be as easy as we think to
disconnect ourselves: The discourse of accessibility as a right plays an
important role in development, so institutionalizing the right to disconnect might
prove counter-productive if it is abused as an excuse to purposely alienate or
marginalize certain groups.&amp;nbsp; We also have
to think that there are financial interests at play, as the more connected one
is the more can be sold to one and the more that can be commoditized. Angela
from the Philippines has a similar concern:&amp;nbsp;
&lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/angela-minas/blogs/maybe-we-have-lost-right-not-know"&gt;Are we losing the right to not know?&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;
With the increasing arrival of web 3, the amount of information we
constantly access, manipulate, assimilate and re-transmit is vast. In an age of
ubiquitous information bombardment, can we choose to be ignorant? Are there any
situations where actually not knowing is a valid alternative?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some people focused on how we access (or
choose to not access) information and what we do with it, some others focused
on how said access affects our personalities, our identities and who we
perceive we are. Nishant from CIS in India thinks that &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/nishant/blogs/right-be-many"&gt;having multiple
identities&lt;/a&gt; should be a right in the digital age. Nishant explains that even
though we all have different aspects of our personalities which constitute different
identities, because of the nature of social interactions and the spaces where
these occurred, we were forced to choose one identity at a time. “The analogue
individual was subjected to the laws of linear physics and time, where s/he was
allowed to be only one person at one time and mapped to the one body”. Now,
with the arrival of the digital individual, we can be many in many ways, in
many spaces, simultaneously.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Because we can express our different
identities freely and without needing to be consolidated into “one”, this frees
up the possibility of having multiple and often contradictory opinions. The
Internet has the potential of being a place where one can explore the varying
meanings and impacts of each of his/her identities. Yet, experiences online get
“fixed”&amp;nbsp; into one of these identities,
for example, if I am the person who usually posts news on my Facebook page, the
community around me tends to expect this kind of behaviour from me, to the point
where if I want to change my mind I need to withdraw completely from the
community. This is why Josine from HIVOS in the Netherlands thinks that there
should be more online spaces where one is allowed to &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/josine/blogs/right-change-your-mind"&gt;change one’s mind&lt;/a&gt;. A
related idea to that one of being able to change one’s mind according to the
particular identity is the ability to &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/tettner/blogs/i-believe-being-able-choose-ones-identity-right"&gt;choose one’s identity&lt;/a&gt;. Samuel Tettner expresses that the analogue person’s personality was directly
tied to his/her environment and surroundings. This way, the identity was
determined by the place where one was born, the surrounding community and its
language, customs and traditions. In the digital age, people have access to a
much more culture, and the global quality of the Internet is helping to break the continuity between physical space and identity.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So, what do you think of cross-section of what
people think should be rights in the digital age? Write down your comments
please. Of course, if you don’t, you’d still be within your rights as a digital
being, at least according to Prabhas who lives in Kosovo. Prabhas believes that
the &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://digitalnatives.in/prabhas/blogs/right-lurk#new"&gt;right to lurk&lt;/a&gt; should be a right in the digital age. “In an age of
increasing digital participation, silent participation must be considered
participation, and left be. Not everyone needs to comment, vote, whatever else.
Some may just read/watch/listen, and perhaps, appreciate. It is okay if no
thumb is clicked up, no quick reply sent back. No blog written."&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The April issue puts the spotlight on an emerging trope in society and media: the more connected we are to our gadgets, peer network and social media, the lonelier we feel. The debate, which traces its opening volley to Sherry Turkle's book 'Alone Together', will look at the recurrent media commentary that points to pop-surveys, anecdotes from psychologists, and conscientious academics who talk about increasing isolation among heavy gadget users. Since our gadgets are more often than not net enabled, it doesn't take a giant leap to infer that people who spend a lot of time online count themselves as part of the Lonely Hearts Club.     <title>How to Put Up a Facebook Resistance </title>

        &lt;b&gt;Review of Marc Stumpel’s essay, "Mapping the Politics of Web 2.0: Facebook Resistance", in Digital Alternatives with a Cause Book 2: To Think, pp.24-31 by Oliver Leistert.&lt;/b&gt;
        
&lt;p&gt;Facebook is right now in a peculiar situation: the planned IPO bears a
 lot of risks and puts pressure on the Western market leader of Social 
Networking Sites. The current discussion about Facebook's timeline is 
only the tip of the iceberg, a symptom of a larger conflict that lurks 
behind it: how much direct marketing are Facebook users willing to take?
 How many drastic top-down changes of the user's Facebook experience are
 possible unless they understand that their presence on this site and 
what they do there is in tension with the company's goals that provides 
this digital environment?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Stumpel addresses Facebook as a communication instance that is 
subordinated by power lines. He refers to Manuel Castell's notion of 
power in the network society. This characterization then is expanded to 
the concept of protocological control as outlined by Alexander Galloway 
and Eugene Thacker. While Castell's power concept still very much 
resonates within conventional power theories of the political sciences, 
which proclaim that someone holds power while someone else doesn't, 
Galloway and Thacker open this notion towards the micro-elements within 
power relations of a networked society. Considering software and 
protocol as agents of power that proscribe the way how communication 
flows are possible, they open the black box of technology and understand
 it, like many other Science and Technology Studies Scholars, as 
enmeshed into societal relations, as products of societal relations and 
as production sites of societal relations. Code is law, code is an 
executable materiality, and code is flawed. The point of design is one 
possible point of resistance: “the possibilities afforded by Facebook to
 its users are infinite only as long as they subscribe to the normative 
operating logic of its design” and thus Stumpel's project, &lt;a class="external-link" href="http://fbresistance.com/"&gt;Fbresistance.com&lt;/a&gt;, plays with new designs to provoke new use.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since many debates about Facebook either concentrate on how to use it
 the right way (i.e. more privacy aware) or ways to leave Facebook 
completely, Stumpel's proposal is original as it discusses how to 
empower users within Facebook, which at first glance looks 
counterintuitive and not so promising. And of course, the effects are 
limited because the remaining part of a systemic logic reduces the means
 of resistance to the degree that the key components of Facebook use 
need to remain operational. This is not a proposal for the n-th new, 
decentralized and non-commercial geek-affine network. In a sense, 
Stumpel reconsiders within the realm of an undemocratic regime the kind 
of bottom-up approaches that both, put pressure on Facebook and make it 
at least look more like an instance of software that the user has 
produced. As he writes “control is exercised through predefined options,
 preferences and possible actions which are imposed onto the user” (28) 
therefore a line of resistance, and thus empowerment, is to eliminate 
such predefined options and invent new ones beyond Facebook's regime.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These means are limited technically as the point of interrogation is 
on the client side. Most effectively, Facebook Resistance as Stumpel 
envisions it, is a tool &lt;a href="https://cis-india.org/digital-natives/media-coverage/how-to-put-up-a-facebook-resistance-1#fn1" name="fr1"&gt;[1]&lt;/a&gt;
 to change the User Interface beyond the default lines defined by either
 browser setting or the user's Facebook options page. The client-sided 
site of action has a surprising effect that goes clearly beyond what the
 company wants: because JavaScript is a powerful instance in the 
machinic process that affects not only how one sees the screen, but can 
change functionality and processes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there is a downside 
here: as much as Facebook interacts with single users and single users 
are replicating their subjectivity on Facebook in an opportunistic 
fashion, to use Greasemonkey &lt;a href="https://cis-india.org/digital-natives/media-coverage/how-to-put-up-a-facebook-resistance-1#fn2" name="fr2"&gt;[2]&lt;/a&gt;
 as tool of resistance keeps the effects of change limited to the 
individual user's page and screen. Friends that check a Facebook page 
that has been changed with Greasemonkey tools will not see these 
changes. They remain excluded from this resistance. This is because a 
client-side resistance designed with Greasemonkey cannot be shared and 
cannot become a common experience. Here, I think, the proposal to 
challenge Facebook within Facebook's realm reaches its limits and it 
becomes clear that the protocological regime is stable as long as its 
servers are not affected. The “exploit” that Galloway and Thacker seek 
as the contemporary form of resistance within digital environments need 
to be placed within the network and needs to have a bi-directional 
communication capacity to reach out. Stumpel argues that applying 
client-sided Javascript already is a way to exploit the protocological 
regime &lt;a href="https://cis-india.org/digital-natives/media-coverage/how-to-put-up-a-facebook-resistance-1#fn3" name="fr3"&gt;[3]&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At
 the core of the rhetorics of Web 2.0 prosumerism is the blurring of 
production and consumption and the proclamation of the user as a 
productive entity. Stumpel's argument lies somewhat in between two 
worlds: rightly claiming that code is the key to digital autonomy and 
client side code cannot deliver this autonomy, like an alternative 
Social Networking Site that offers open protocols so that any other code
 base can connect. Scripting away one's Facebook page is a good start to
 understand the materiality of one's online presence. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A way out 
of this systemic dilemma is to publish screenshots of how one sees the 
page changed with self made scripts. This method has already proven to 
be a great aid in circumventing censorship &lt;a href="https://cis-india.org/digital-natives/media-coverage/how-to-put-up-a-facebook-resistance-1#fn4" name="fr4"&gt;[4]&lt;/a&gt;,
 which is just another regime of what-you-see-is-what-we-want-you-to-see
 (WYSIWWWYTS). This as well shows the limits of power of code: image 
files can transport human centric layers that machines are (still) not 
capable to decode. Thus, by and large images remain a non-object in the 
code regime. This is a cheap and useful exploit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a lot of 
people don't feel the agency to leave Facebook altogether because they 
have invested too much of their social life into the machine, already 
one can consider this as Facebook's real power: the social lock-in. Thus
 all considerations to challenge Facebook from within its own domain and
 regime are ways to irritate Facebook's basic layer: their economy which
 is based on selling ads and data through standardized forms and sites. 
If a critical number of Facebook sites would be DIY styled, many clients
 of Facebook and the huge armada of third-parties behind it would fast 
be worried about their assumption that with Facebook, communal 
communications have been successfully commodified in a stable way that 
allows investments of billions of dollars.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Habits of Living Thinkathon — Day 2 Live Blog: Radhika Gajjala Lectures on e-Philanthropy</title>

        &lt;b&gt;The Habits of Living Thinkathon (Thinking Marathon) is being hosted by the Centre for Internet and Society in Bangalore, India, from September 26 to 29, 2012. The event brings together a range of multi-disciplinary scholars and practitioners. The aim of the workshop is to generate a dialogue on the notion of surrogate structures that have become visible landmarks of contemporary life, and to produce new conceptual frameworks to help us understand networks and the ways in which they inform our everyday practice and thought. &lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Today,  Radhika Gajalla gave a lecture about a body of work which she called as  "Emerging forms of Surrogacy, E-Philanthropy and Digital Globalization  through Online Micro-transactional Platforms". It looks at online  micro-transaction platforms. She ran us through some of the history of  micro-finance theory, from Yunis' methods of female empowerment to  micro-finance as a profit-generating activity, and the newer online  micro-finance platforms like KIVA, microplace and CARE's online  micro-finance portal.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Radhika  also spoke about labor organization and supply chains forming for  handicraft micro-enterprises in India. She identified two categories of  platforms that entrepreneurs could use: sites that link buyers directly  to producers, like Etsy and Ebay, and mirco-finance websites that  solicit (usually Western) donors. In some cases, resources like Ebay  cannot be used in India (or couldn’t in the past) because of barriers  like the banning of paypal, and there is more demand for the  micro-finance platforms from lenders (Westerners); these forces have  worked to make the empowered entrepreneur a much more legitimate and  accessible image for lenders.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Consequently,  Radhika begins to identify the politics of imagery on online  micro-finance platforms, and identified two aspects of the images common  on these online platforms: the empowered receiver (who is being  directly empowered by the loans) and the empowered giver (who is being  made to feel good by being enablers for these receivers). The images  being used by the MFIs are strategically used to create the sense of  connection or the belonging to mutual networks with the lenders — an  example of this is individuals in the West who weave seeing a picture of  an Indian weaver and want to fund her not just because they interpret  her as poor but also as a fellow weaver. This philanthropic model of  giving also uses guilt relief as a motivation — the return on the loan  is the relief of guilt.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In the  participant discussions, it was pointed out that the images also spur  lending through the promise of improving lives. Also, this concept of  using moral responsibility to prompt giving can be paralleled with the  movement in Western business spheres of social responsibility.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Another  participant brought up the idea of mobilization, and asks us to think  about what mobilizes individuals or groups to give in to these  micro-finance organizations? Is it really hope, or is it shame? To what  extent can these really motivate us?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Further,  participant interaction caused us to wonder if, on websites like KIVA,  both lenders and receivers become nodes and entry-points into new  networks, or even the sites of new network creation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As for  my own thoughts, I was particularly interested in a point that one  participant made on the expression of poverty in the images on KIVA:  they do not showcase destitution. While they are images of poverty, they  are also images of hope — the colours are bright, the subjects are  smiling. Are these images much more powerful as motivators for Western  donations because Westerners are desensitized to images of destitute  poverty? Or are they just more accessible to Western viewers?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;While  destitution suggests a rigidity of causal structures that cannot be  altered by either the subject or the viewer, the image of the smiling  Indian woman standing in front of the spinning wheel expresses the  concept that poverty is escapable using the inherent tools and skills  possessed by the subject, to the only thing missing that is capital — an  idea that is much more accessible to the Western donor. It is also  possible that the movement in international aid and development media  from images of destitution to images of hope impresses upon the donor  that there has been progress in the Global South, possibly progress that  can be attributed to actions of Western development initiatives, which  legitimizes the donation by implicating that improvement is possible and  currently taking place.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There is shortage of water in the area I am living in&lt;em&gt;. &lt;/em&gt;But there is one farmer who has abundant access to water. He dug up 27 meters under the earth, hoping as he said, "either to find gold, water or oil". It is a somehow funny statement but the farmer managed to get water at last. I think the story could teach other people in my country (who have lost hope) to concentrate on what they want to achieve something better. Through digital media, I want to reach other people and instil hope in them. My video is a tool for outreach.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What do you understand by the term Digital Native? Do you consider yourself one? Do digital natives belong to a particular socio-economic-cultural demographic?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Digital Native is a person who uses digital technology in their day to day life; it can be a phone, computer, cameras, or any other form of digital technology. I am a digital native since I have grown up surrounded by and using digital technology. You do not have to be from any particular socio-economic background to be considered a digital native as long as you are using digital technology in your life then you are a digital native.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Do you agree with the perception that the digital native belongs to a certain socio-economic background from a developed nation?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I disagree because a digital native can be anyone from any part of the world. The world today is a ‘global village’ and whatever gadgets a young American guy uses, there is another Young Asian/ African / European/Latin person who is using similar gadgets for a different purpose. It can be for their own amusement or it can be for bringing about social change, for example an American can be using his gadget to entertain him/herself and another person on another part of the world (like where the Arab Spring took place), could be using a similar gadget to share information on what’s happening with the rest of the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Can digital natives from developing nations create an impact with digital activism?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes, digital natives can make an impact by using social media, mobile phones and other digital technology to create awareness by sharing information, mobilizing people and encouraging them to take necessary action required. I am part of the &lt;a href="http://www.avaaz.org/en/index.php"&gt;Avaaz&lt;/a&gt; campaigning community that brings people- powered politics to decision making worldwide.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;How does digital activism differ from traditional forms of ground campaigning? &lt;/strong&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Digital activism is a very effective way of raising awareness since a lot of people are spending most of their time online and it is easy to get them to join your cause as long as they believe in it. This can be done through signing online petitions, getting people to pressure decision makers using social media through their Facebook pages and twitter account, and encourage people to join the campaign by just a click of a button.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Are digital natives taking the easy way out by setting up Facebook pages to ‘Save the Planet’, clicktivism as it’s called?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No, they are not taking the easy way out because information is power and one of the ways to share the information is creating the Facebook pages by which people can be made aware of issues. I believe the likes, clicks and shares are the first steps that need to be taken before going out there and doing something.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A recent example of digital activism is the Get Kony video campaign. What is your response to the criticism it has received?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have seen the video and it is a great campaign. The use of social media was very effective, clearly showing how clicking, liking and sharing can have such a great impact. The response is great and I believe the campaign will succeed since more people are joining the initiative from different parts of the world. Although it has been done by a White, male, American, there should be more of us digital native, in places like Africa, rising and joining in to do such campaigns.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Citizen action and ICT&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We live in a global community connected by digital technology and it is very rare to find a part of the world where technology is not being applied. The power is shifting back to the people and the only way we are going to succeed is through encouraging fellow citizens to take action through use of ICT tools.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Everyday Digital Native video contest has got its pulse on what makes youths from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds connect with one another in the global community – it’s an affinity for digital technologies and Web 2.0-mediated platforms coupled with a drive to spearhead social change. The contest invited people from around the world to make a video that would answer the question, ‘Who is the Everyday Digital Native’? The final videos received more than &lt;del&gt;20,000&lt;/del&gt; 3,000 votes from the public and our top five winners emerged from across three continents!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://cis-india.org/digital-natives/framing-digital-alternatives" class="internal-link" title="Framing the Digital Alternatives"&gt;The Digital AlterNatives Featurette &lt;/a&gt;(PDF, 2847 KB) is a peek into the minds of digital natives as citizen activists. The 10 featured interviews of the Digital Natives video contest finalists don't fit the stereotype of the Globalized Digital Native: Young Geeks apathetic to 'Saving the Planet'. Rather, these are affirmative citizens, young, middle aged and senior, who consider digital technology as second nature for use in personal, professional or socio-political capacities.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 'Digital Natives with a Cause?' is a collaborative research-inquiry between The Centre for Internet &amp;amp; Society, India and HIVOS Knowledge Programme, the Netherlands into the field of youth, change and technology in the context of the Global South. The three-year research project has resulted in the four-book collective, 'Digital AlterNatives with a Cause?' published in 2011.         &lt;b&gt;Studies often focus on how digital natives do their activism in identifying the characteristics of youth digital activism and dedicate little attention to what the activism is about. The second blog post in the Beyond the Digital series reverses this trend and explores how the Blank Noise Project articulates the issue it addresses: street sexual harassment.   &lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To
try to understand youth digital activism is to first understand what the issue
it deals with is all about. This point is made clear by the 13 people involved
in Blank Noise, who all started our conversation with a discussion on eve
teasing, the issue that Blank Noise deals with and the reason for its existence.
Taking the hint from them, I start sharing my research journey by sharing how
Blank Noise thinks of the issue it takes. As I recall our conversations, I am
still amazed by how everyone, regardless of whether they have been involved as
an initiator of a 15-day Facebook campaign or as a coordinator for five years,
share the following articulation &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;‘Eve
teasing’ is a euphemism in English that refers to the various forms of sexual
harassment experienced by women in public places, be it parks, streets, or
buses. It takes different forms, ranging from staring, verbal lampooning,
accidental jostling, or outright groping. While public sexual harassments also
occur in almost every place in the globe, the term ‘eve teasing’ itself is
particular to South Asia, especially India. The term plays on the biblical Eve
that is considered as a temptress, playing on the dichotomy of ‘good and bad’
women and placing the blame on women for enticing men to tease them. The word
‘tease’ itself downplays the severity of the action and making it a trivial,
funny, non-issue - so much that it is regarded as a rite of passage into
womanhood and ignored by the authorities unless it leads to violent deaths. This
term is what Blank Noise seeks to address; it aims to denounce the word ‘eve
teasing’ and call it by its appropriate name: street sexual harassment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;While
in the popular perception street sexual harassment happen only to young women
who dress in Western fashion, actually all women irrespective of age, class, or
dress have experienced it. In a much lesser degree, men also experienced street
sexual harassment. However, the norms of masculinity deny their victimhood and
a typical reaction would be ‘yes, I got felt up but I pity the bugger because
he’s gay’ (Blank Noise, 2005).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The
root of the problem is how eve teasing is internalized by all members of the
society, including women. Laura Neuhaus, a 27 year old American woman who
became active in Blank Noise when she worked in Bangalore for a few years, was
shocked to find that the senior women in her department, who had PhD degrees
and were at the top of their career, turned a blind eye to the harassment they
experience and advised her to do the same. Tanvee Nabar, a 19 year old student
who was one of the initiators of Blank Noise’s ‘I Never Ask for It’ Facebook
campaign, stated that victims may also perpetuate the problem by thinking that
accusing themselves of being responsible for the harassment because of the way
they dress or behave. She said, “Even by thinking that way I am validating eve
teasing, so this needs to stop.”&lt;em&gt; &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The
problem thrives on the silence of victims, who are further deterred from
speaking up by negative reactions ranging from agreeing that it’s a problem but
it should be ignored because nothing can be done about it, increased
restrictions from protective parents, or even offers to beat up the perpetrator
to get even by men relatives or spouses.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However,
Blank Noise recognizes that the issue is not as straightforward as it may seem.
While some actions like groping are clearly a form of harassment, other forms
such as looking or verbal taunting are not as obvious. Therefore, rather than
offering a rigid guideline to what is or is not street sexual harassment, Blank
Noise attempts to build a definition of ‘eve teasing’ through public polls,
both online on its blog and on the streets.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Blank
Noise does not advocate for any specific, tangible solution either. &amp;nbsp;It is not proposing for a new legislation or service
provision. Many youth experts would say that it is a sign of youth’s decreasing
trust to the state, but actually this is an extension of Blank Noise’s
acknowledgement of the ambiguity of street sexual harassment. Hemangini Gupta, a
29 years old Blank Noise coordinator, asked, “Should we be allowing the state to legislate an issue like street
sexual harassment where there is so much grey even with how it is understood
and defined - from ‘looking’ to physical violence?” Instead, Blank Noise aims
at creating public dialogue to break the ignorance on street sexual harassment and change the
mindset of both men and women, young and old. Blank Noise does not promote a specific course of action for women
affected by the harassment either; it promotes the confidence to choose how to
react to harassment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What
is unique about Blank Noise from this articulation? Some would argue that Blank
Noise is unique for being the first collective that addresses eve teasing, but
a closer inquiry into the history of the Indian women movements show that it is
widely acknowledged as a form of violence against women. However, perhaps due
to the limited resources of the movement, efforts to address eve teasing have
been taken up very systematically (Gandhi and Shah, 2002). In this sense, when
it was born in 2003, Blank Noise was unique for being the only group whose
existence is solely dedicated to address this issue.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Blank
Noise is not unique in problematizing the issue of violence against women. The
women’s movements in India and elsewhere have been refusing to prescribe any
solutions to the victims and identifying patriarchal mindset of both men and
women as the root cause either. Yet, it is exceptional in not identifying an
opponent or an entity where concrete demands are proposed to push for a
tangible progress towards a change of mindset.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Intangible
changes are as good as tangible ones. &amp;nbsp;This might be a new characteristic of how
digital natives think about their causes, but it could also be more related to
their reading of the specific issue they are dealing with. Perhaps, if the
issue at hand is climate change, the same people will advocate for specific
solutions to the state or promote concrete behavior change. Either way, the
message is clear: we need to always take into account &lt;em&gt;what &lt;/em&gt;a digital natives activism is about and not just &lt;em&gt;how &lt;/em&gt;they do it!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Telugu Wikipedia celebrated its 10&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; anniversary. An event was co-organized in Vijaywada to celebrate the same.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The second Institute on Internet and Society was held in Pune from February 11 to 17. The proceedings from the workshop are captured in a blog post. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;CIS announced an Open Call for Comments for the latest draft of the Privacy Bill, 2013 prepared by Bhairav Acharya.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Forbes India published its “30 Under 30 List”. Pranesh Prakash is featured in the list.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;As part of the Making Change Project, Denisse Albornoz wrote a blog post that compares the production behind a performance with the process of storytelling.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Beli gives an introduction to spectrum sharing. The post looks at GSM and CDMA, and touches upon LTE, and how they might share spectrum.&lt;/li&gt;
