It is the official language of <a class="external-link" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odisha">Odisha</a> and the second official language of Jharkhand. Odia is also spoken in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. By 2011 census there are 3.6 crore Odia speakers across the world. Literacy rate of Odisha is 73.45 per cent (82.4 per cent male, 64.36 per cent female).</p> <p style="text-align: justify; ">Majority of the computer users in Odisha were on Microsoft Windows platforms. Windows did not have a stable Odia language support until the release of Windows Vista. This would have forced majority of the computer users prefer English on Odia for internet communication. As per the 2011 census only 5.1 per cent of the 9,661,085 households of Odisha had computers and 1.4 per cent (357,460 households) of the households had access to internet. Odia Wikipedia has only 13 active contributors<a href="#fn1" name="fr1">[1] </a>who are based both in and out of Odisha and contributed to 3715 articles.<a href="#fn2" name="fr2">[2] </a></p> <p style="text-align: justify; ">Low computer/internet penetration, lack of promotion/outreach of Odia Wikipedia are some of the major factors which resulted in low Wikipedia participation. There is a need for wider media coverage about Odia Wikipedia.</li> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Lack of focussed meetups/outreach events due to dispersed community: Outreach events and meetups have not been customized for the target audience and have been done in a low scale because of the small community dispersed in six different cities. Physical meetups often have been more on technical issues and not much focus on designing strategies for growing content and community. Experienced wikipedians conducting outreach need to be trained properly to conduct productive outreach events.</li> <li style="text-align: justify; ">More city centric communities: Majority of community members are located in three major cities; Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Nalconagar. This has resulted in outreach events being more delimited to these three cities only. There is a need for taking Odia Wikipedia to more cities.</li> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Target age group for outreach: Till date the targeted audience for outreach are mostly engineering/other students based in cities where English is predominantly the language of communication in terms of written/computer communication and partly verbal communication. Many of the elderly masses are unaware of even the existence of Odia Wikipedia. More of young professionals, elderly and retired professionals need to be involved in the outreach.</li> </ol> <ul> <li><b>Accessibility issues</b></li> </ul> <p><i>Technical hindrance</i></p> <ol> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Lack of Unicode usage: Printing industry professionals still use non-Unicode fonts for typing. There are at least three major different typing schemes and font categories used across the industry (includes book/magazine/newspaper publishers, print/digital media). Font converter tools of high accuracy are needed for easy conversion of such available content and using them as primary resources.</li> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Lack of support in typing schemes: Those who are experienced in typing schemes other than the ones used on Odia Wikipedia (InScript, Transliteration, Phonetic) often fail to adapt the typing schemes of Odia Wikipedia. There is a need of new typing schema for simplifying typing in Odia.</li> </ol> <ul> <li><b>Content</b></li> </ul> <ol> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Lack of Open-Source culture: There is very little presence of the open source methodology across academia, media industry and public and private sector organization. A lot of resources produced are either not digitized and distributed or copyrighted. This has been a road block to the Wikipedia community to make use of any kind of archived and digitized resource. Wikipedians need to be connected to more open source communities, exchange ideas/information and spreading words across other communities.</li> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Lack of resource dissemination because of support: Some of the digitized resources are not being distributed because of shortage of manpower and resource.  A book digitization project initiated by Srujanika faced many hindrances during distribution including copyright issues, hosting and manpower for support. Such resources need to be gathered and distributed for community use.</li> </ol> <ul> <li><b>Community</b></li> </ul> <ol> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Role of experienced wikipedians: There is a need of more experienced wikipedians coming forward to take the lead of projects along with their primary contribution for articles. An Odia Wikipedia workshop was conducted for the students of the institution on 31 January, 2017. The students were given an orientation on the basics of editing Wikipedia on the web and on their smart phones in addition to an explanation of Wikipedia policies, history of Wikipedia and Wiki News.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 45 English and Odia language students with a male: female ratio of 60: 40, who took part were given a live demonstration of these topics. Along with the help of supportive faculty members, the students were exposed to Commons and Incubator as well. Overall, the event saw the creation of 20 new editors on Odia Wikipedia. The homepage of Odia Wikipedia and other articles continued to be edited by IP address users until <a>ଓଡ଼ିଆ</a> created his/her account and started modifying the homepage.</p> <p style="text-align: justify; ">Today, Odia Wikipdia has 10,187 articles in article namespace, 47,291 pages in all (including article namespace pages); 10,574 registered users which includes bots. Of these registered users, as of November 2015, 63 users have done at least one edit in November, 13 is the number of users flagged as bots. As all file uploads happen on commons. In this post Sailesh shares his personal experience from his interaction at the Google Extended I/O organised by Google Developer Group in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. All the views are author’s personal views.</b> <p style="text-align: justify; ">On this June 14 Google Developer Group Bhubaneswar organised an extended I/O at Bhubaneswar. To my surprise I found that there were more than 60 participants attending the conference. Basanta Kumar Maharana. TELL WHO HE IS, was the speaker in the event. Basanta shared his memories from Google I/O 2015, San Francisco and demonstrated about the new launch and updates of Google. It was quite interesting for me to learn about various Google apps (?) kike Google cardboard, Android M, etc.</p> <p>In an informal interaction with the host Sanjib Parida, he proposed me to speak about Odia Wikipedia there who came to know about the project while attending <a href="http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:ORWP13">Odia Wikipedia's 13th anniversary</a>.</p> <p>I started my talk by asking four questions to the audience:</p> <ol> <li>How many of the audience know about Wikipedia? (Everyone raised hands.)</li> <li>Who have copied content from Wikipedia for assignments? (People giggled about it, 50-60% of the participants nodded saying yes!)</li> <li>Who knows that anyone can “edit” Wikipedia? (the count reduced to about 10-20%)</li> <li style="text-align: justify; ">Who knows about Odia Wikipedia and contributes in creating and editing articles? (Only 4-5 people said yes, I found 2-3 of them being contributors to Odia Wikipedia)</li> </ol> <p style="text-align: justify; ">I started my talk with a brief introduction to the history of Odia Wikipedia and how it was started in 2002 as one of the first four Indic language Wikipedia projects along with Assamese, Malayalam and Punjabi.</p> <p style="text-align: justify; ">Odia Wikipedia was in dormant for the next eight years which was intervened when Wikimedians like Subhashish Panigrahi, Ashutosh Kar, Anshuman Giri, Mrutyunjaya Kar and others started building a community to improve and increase the content of Odia Wikipedia. Now we have grown as a community consisting about 17 active editors and the project has more than 8800 articles. The monthly page view of Odia Wikipedia has grown to more than 800,000 from merely 200,000 in 2011. We have three active Odia-language Wikimedia projects; Odia Wikipedia, the largest Odia online encyclopedia, online library Odia Wikisource, and multilingual online dictionary Odia Wiktionary. Odia Wikipedia community has not limited their work only in editing articles, rather has expanded into many other aspects of Odia computing. On the day of Odia Wikipedia’s 13th anniversary it has launched a converter that can convert many non-Unicode encodings into Unicode. We have been supported by CIS-A2K for many activities to grow our community and the Odia Wikimedia projects. Like Odia Wikipedia we have 20 more Wikipedia projects in other Indic languages and in over 288 languages globally. The Government of Kerala has introduced Wikipedia contribution in its curriculum for BA and MA students and The Government of Tamilnadu has introduced Tamil Wikipedia to participants at the International Tamil Conference which helped the Tamil Wikimedia community in expanding the community. Awareness and community building are two major challenges for us at this moment. I invited the participants there to take part in the Wikimedia movement.</p> <p style="text-align: justify; ">I touched upon the Odia input for the audience. While it was quite difficult a few years back for Odia input it is no longer a challenge. With the help of the Android app “Indic Keyboard” we can also edit Odia Wikipedia from mobile phones. I myself have used it for editing Wikipedia, for tweeting and posting Facebook status in Odia. After the talk I was asked a few questions. There are two important ones I would like to share here. To the question “how can I contribute in Odia Wikipedia? Do I have to install any keyboard for it?” I elaborated how anyone can edit and expand articles or create new Wikipedia articles in Odia just by creating a new account and logging in to https://or.wikipedia.org, and how the Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia have an input tool called Universal Language Selector (ULS) enabled in them and one does not need to install any additional input method. Currently there are over different typing schemes available for Odia including the non-unicode typing schemes used mostly by the DTP operators and many newspapers and publication houses. One of the earliest development was the </span><a href="http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/ସହଯୋଗ:ଓଡ଼ିଆରେ_ଟାଇପ_କରିବେ_କେମିତି#Odia_InScript" style="text-align: justify; ">Inscript keyboard layout</a><span style="text-align: justify; "> which follows a global standard for most Indic languages. Inscript is useful and once someone gets his fingers used to typing it is fun. But, most of the beginners find it difficult to type in Inscript. In those cases phonetic keyboards are quite helpful where someone need to press the English keys which corresponds to the Roman characters, e.g. R-a-d-h-aa for "Radha". Based on these sort of logics a keyboard layout was deployed for all the Indic languages on </span><a href="http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Narayam" style="text-align: justify; ">Narayam</a><span style="text-align: justify; "> including Odia. (See </span><a href="http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/ସହଯୋଗ:ଓଡ଼ିଆରେ_ଟାଇପ_କରିବେ_କେମିତି#Odia_Transliteration.29" style="text-align: justify; ">Odia transliteration</a><span style="text-align: justify; "> for details). The primary developer for transliteration was </span><a href="http://junaidpv.in/" style="text-align: justify; ">Junaid PV</a><span style="text-align: justify; ">, a Malayalam Wikipedian who helped for the Indic languages and few other Asian languages. As transliteration follows more a common rule there are many ambiguities and bugs reported after it was deployed on Odia Wikipedia. Even though many rounds of changes there are still bugs which doesn't allow many editors to type accurately. This is one of the reasons when there was a need for a purely phonetic typing scheme which has more affinity to the way an Odia user would type the words using a Roman key board.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify; "><span style="text-align: justify; "><span style="text-align: justify; ">The idea for deploying a new phonetic typing scheme was started during </span><a href="http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/India_Hackathon_2011" style="text-align: justify; ">Mumbai Hackathon in 2011</a><span style="text-align: justify; ">. Subhashish brought the proposal in community village pump for ideas and consensus and the basic layout and testing was done. The whole project went into a slumber for a long time! Recently when </span><a href="http://yuvi.in/" style="text-align: justify; ">YuviPanda</a><span style="text-align: justify; "> was in Delhi and met Subhashish the idea of hacking and testing the tool came again. The whole keyboard layout was </span><a href="https://github.com/wikimedia/jquery.ime/blob/master/rules/or/or-lekhani.js" style="text-align: justify; ">revised and deployed on github</a><span style="text-align: justify; ">. The program began in November 2012 and got over by January 2013. Sixteen student wikipedians signed up and took part in editing more than a dozen articles on Odia Wikipedia.</b> <p align="JUSTIFY">Odia Wikimedia community is primarily active in three major cities: Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Nalconagar. There was a sustained growth in the community during August-October 2012 which inspired the comunity to initiate a long term program like <a class="external-link" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Education_program‎">Wikipedia Education Program</a>. <a class="external-link" href="http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MKar">Mrutyunjaya Kar</a> from Nalconagar community reached out to several schools in Nalconagar and Phulbani to find a potential institute for such a program. <a class="external-link" href="http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Psubhashish">Subhashish</a> from <a class="external-link" href="http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Access_To_Knowledge">Access To Knowledge</a> team of CIS supported the community for setting up a meeting with Prof. <a class="external-link" href="http://www.iimc.nic.in/mrinal-chatterjee.html">Mrinal Chatterjee</a> and few other faculty members of <a class="external-link" href="http://www.iimc.nic.in/branches-dhenkanal.html">Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal</a> followed by a workshop for the students.</p> <p align="JUSTIFY">More than 45 students from both Odia and English department took part for the first introductory workshop. A <a class="external-link" href="http://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ:ଉଇକିପିଡ଼ିଆ_ଶିକ୍ଷା_ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପ/ଭାରତୀୟ_ଜନସଂଚାର_ସଂସ୍ଥାନ,_ଢେଙ୍କାନାଳ-୧">program page</a> was created on Odia Wikipedia for the detailed plan and discussion. 16 out of 45 students showed their interest to take part in the program and signed up on the project page. Teaching assistants Bhagaban and Sucharita supported the students in assessing and suggesting articles. A follow up session was organized in December by the Nalconagar Wiki-Community to teach the students about the typing and basic Wikipedia editing. Students continued to edit their chosen articles. Though initially the program was planned to be run for 3-4 months because of the course structure and exam announcement students requested for the closure of it.</p> <p align="JUSTIFY">The articles were assessed and wiki-fied by the wikipedians. On January, 26 a celebratory event was organized for the student-wikipedians. Prof. Chatterjee addressed the students about the benefits of contributing to Wikipedia in their mother tongue Odia.
