    <title>Habits of Living Thinkathon — Day 1 Live Blog: Globalising Lady GaGa</title>

        &lt;b&gt;The Habits of Living Thinkathon (Thinking Marathon) is being hosted by the Centre for Internet and Society in Bengaluru, India, from September 26 to 29, 2012. The event brings together a range of multidisciplinary scholars and practitioners. The workshop aims to generate a dialogue on the notion of surrogate structures that have become visible landmarks of contemporary life, and produce new conceptual frameworks to help us understand networks and the ways in which they inform our everyday practice and thought. &lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Maesy Angelina, an independent researcher from Jakarta, Indonesia was the first speaker with her presentation "Subversive Banality: Global Celebrities and Citizenship Practices on Twitter". Angelina first draws our attention to the way we tend to celebrate social media outlets like Twitter as being a site of political and activist resistance (Arab Spring). However, the reality of the situation is that the highest trending topics on Twitter throughout the world are about celebrities. Twitter users, including those in Indonesia where Angelina’s research focuses, are not tweeting about contemporary violence in society (at least directly). While some scholars have suggested that this is indicative of the mindlessness of the masses, Angelina wants to complexify this narrative and offer that perhaps the masses have different tactics to contest notions of citizenship that are not intelligible from a traditional 'activist' or 'academic' schema.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Angelina focuses on a series of protests and debates about international pop sensation Lady Gaga performing in Indonesia from March - June 2012. In reviewing the tweets generated during this time, Angelina finds that most of these messages have nothing to do with Lady Gaga and often include perspectives on culture, nature, and other topics pertaining to citizenship. For example: "Music is universal, but gyrating moves and revealing clothes are not".  Angelina argues that the (international) celebrity presents an opportunity, a site by which Indonesian people are able to contest notions of citizenship. She presents the ‘banality’ of this celebrity discourse as actually subversive. She images this discourse as a way of the masses asserting agency.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Angelina’s presentation sparked an important conversation. Most notably, participants were concerned with what it means to view Twitter as a legitimate network by which to make these claims? Is Twitter really representative of the appropriate network to analyse these topics? Conceptual and methodological challenges arise here: what tools do we use to analyse new forms of media when we currently do not have the apparatus and training methods to do so? Participants also noted a serious need for historicity in these types of analyses. While we tend to fetishise the ‘digital’ or ‘social media’ ‘turn,’ we have to acknowledge histories — including fan culture in this case — that shape and structure the advent of these new discourses. Participants called for Angelina to ground her claims within histories of models of citizenship — particularly citizenships based on consumption.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I found Angelina’s presentation and notion of banal subversiveness quite provocative. However, I think we have to all think more critically about what it means that many of these international celebrities that initiate this dialogue are white and American. Considering that citizenship is already a fraught and contested category within formerly colonised areas, how do we incorporate an analysis of (neo)imperialism within our frameworks? How is the (racialised, gendered, etc.) body of the ‘foreign’ celebrity different to that of the ‘local’ celebrity?  While it is important to acknowledge the increasing instability of these dichotomies and concede the interconnectivity of global system(s), fundamental questions of power, inequality, and colonialism cannot be neglected in this discussion.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Oliver Lerone Schulz from the Post Media Lab in Lueneburg, Germany spoke next. Schulz’s approach to theory is unique due to his history in traditionally non-academic spaces which generate and approach theory in fundamentally different ways.  He is committed to a conception of media that is not fettered by technological media. At its core, Schulz’s presentation sought to assert a conceptual schema, an epistemology to address questions of the visual. He reminds us how questions of the image and the visual have emerged as a specific point of irritation in contemporary theory and have come to represent an unsolved problem or anomaly. Schulz utilises a paradigm of globalisation to grapple with this dilemma.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Schulz asks us how is globalisation visualized? What does it mean to map out globalisation? Schulz reviews relevant literature on the visual domain establishing that a visual is a representation of something that cannot be represented in the first place without efforts to visualise it. Following this, we can recognise that globalisation is presented as a diagnosis of our times, but &lt;i&gt;it is also&lt;/i&gt; the object which is being diagnosed. His project is an attempt to locate and establish a visual politics which is not only visual to map, characterise and critique globalisation. He draws the audience’s attention to a series of images and asks: to what extent can you see globalisation?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Schulz’s presentation raises important questions on the efficacy of visual analyses and frameworks. Participants agree that the visual turn is in crisis, and yet why do we still insist on reading the visual? Nishant and Akansha pushed the debate further suggesting that globalisation can be viewed as a series of images. More than the visual itself, it is the stack of visuals that are important. As Nishant reminds us, we need to de-stabilise the visual as the only form that needs to be read. We must read it, but not see it as central.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The most important point that emerged from Schulz’s presentation is that like any other network, globalisation is a diagnosis of the contemporary, but it is also the malady and the cure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;From day one of the conference, the contradictions and paradoxes already emerge.&lt;/p&gt;

This research needs the experiences and expertise of people who think about these issues of language online from different perspectives. &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The problem:&lt;/strong&gt; The internet we have today is not multilingual enough to reflect the full depth and breadth of humanity. Language is a good proxy for, or way to understand, knowledge – different languages can represent different ways of knowing and learning about our worlds. Yet most online knowledge today is created and accessible only through colonial languages, and mostly English. The UNESCO Report on ‘&lt;a href="https://unesdoc.unesco.org/in/documentViewer.xhtml?v=2.1.196&amp;amp;id=p::usmarcdef_0000232743&amp;amp;file=/in/rest/annotationSVC/DownloadWatermarkedAttachment/attach_import_8df09604-0040-4b44-b53c-110207ac407d%3F_%3D232743eng.pdf&amp;amp;locale=en&amp;amp;multi=true&amp;amp;ark=/ark:/48223/pf0000232743/PDF/232743eng.pdf#685_15_CI_EN_int.indd%3A.7579%3A23" target="_blank"&gt;A Decade of Promoting Multilingualism in Cyberspace&lt;/a&gt;’ (2015) estimated that “out of the world’s approximately 6,000 languages, just 10 of them make up 84.3 percent of people using the Internet, with English and Chinese the dominant languages, accounting for 52 per cent of Internet users worldwide.” More languages become endangered and disappear every year; &lt;a href="http://www.unesco.org/new/en/culture/themes/endangered-languages/atlas-of-languages-in-danger/" target="_blank"&gt;230 languages have become extinct between 1950 and 2010&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At best, then, 7% of the world’s &lt;a href="https://www.ethnologue.com/statistics" target="_blank"&gt;languages&lt;/a&gt; are captured in published material, and an even smaller fraction of these languages are available online. This is particularly critical for communities who have been historically or currently marginalized by power and privilege – women, people of colour, LGBT*QIA folks, indigenous communities, and others marginalized from the global South (Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Pacific Islands). We often cannot add or access knowledge in our own languages on the internet. This reinforces and deepens inequalities and invisibilities that already exist offline, and denies all of us the richness of the multiple knowledges of the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some of the issues that shape our abilities to create and share content online in our languages include:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The internet’s infrastructure (hardware, software, platforms, protocols…);&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Content management tools and technologies for translation, digitization, and archiving (voice, machine-learning systems and AI, semantic web…);&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The experience of those who consume and produce information online in different languages (devices like cell phones and laptops, messaging tools, micro-blogging, audio-video…);&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The experience of looking for content in different languages online, through search engines and other tools.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Understanding the range of these issues will help us map the possibilities and concerns around linguistic biases and disparities on the internet.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Who we are:&lt;/strong&gt; We are a group of three research partners who believe that the internet we co-create should support, share, and amplify knowledge in all of the world’s languages. For this to happen, we need to better understand the challenges and opportunities that support or prevent our languages and knowledges from being online. The Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) is a non-profit organisation that undertakes interdisciplinary research on internet and digital technologies from policy and academic perspectives. The areas of focus include digital accessibility for persons with disabilities, access to knowledge, intellectual property rights, openness (including open data, free and open source software, open standards, open access, open educational resources, and open video), internet governance, telecommunication reform, digital privacy, and cyber-security. The &lt;a href="https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank"&gt;Oxford Internet Institute&lt;/a&gt; is a multidisciplinary research and teaching department of the University of Oxford, dedicated to the social science of the Internet. &lt;a href="https://whoseknowledge.org/" target="_blank"&gt;Whose Knowledge?&lt;/a&gt; is a global campaign to centre the knowledges of marginalized communities – the majority of the world – online.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Together we are creating a State of the Internet’s Languages report, as baseline research with both numbers and stories, to demonstrate how far we are from making the internet multilingual. &lt;li&gt;Self-identifies as being from a marginalized community, and you find it difficult to bring your community’s knowledge online because the technology to display your language’s script is hard to access or read&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Works on creating content in languages that are from parts of the world, and from people, who are mostly invisible and unheard online&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Is a techie who works on making keyboards for non-colonial languages&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Is a linguist who tries to bring together communities and technologies in a way that is easy and accessible&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;... you may be any of these, all of these, or more!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We are looking for your experience online to help us tell the story of how limited the language capacities of the internet are, currently, and how much opportunity there is for making the internet share our knowledges in our many different languages. Most importantly: you don’t have to be an academic or researcher to apply, we particularly encourage people experiencing these issues in their everyday lives and work to contribute!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;How and where and using what technologies do you share or create content in your language? (&lt;em&gt;you might think about, for example, video, audio, writing, social media, digitization…whatever formats, tools, processes or websites you use for creating oral, visual, textual, or other forms of content&lt;/em&gt;.)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;What is challenging to create or share on your language online? (&lt;em&gt;you might think about, for example, access, device usability, platforms, websites, apps and other tools, software, fonts, digital literacy, etc when developing digital archives, online language resources, or just making any presence on the web in general for your language&lt;/em&gt;.)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;எல்லா உள்ளடக்கத்தையும் கணக்கில் எடுத்தால் கூட, உலகின் 7% மொழிகளில் தான் ஆக்கங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. இவற்றில் சிலவே இணையத்தில் கிடைக்கின்றன. முற்காலத்தில் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டிருந்த பழங்குடியின சமூகத்தினர், அடக்குமுறைக்கு உட்பட்டிருந்த பெண்கள், நிறவெறிக்கு உட்பட்டிருந்தோர், மாற்று பாலின கருத்தியல் கொன்டோர் ஆகியோருக்கான ஆக்கங்கள் வெகு சில. பெரும்பாலானோர் இணையத்தில் தம் தாய்மொழியில் தகவல்களை தேடிப் பெற முடிவதில்லை. தம் மொழியில் கிடைக்கப்பெறாத பெரும்பாலானோருக்கு இவ்வுலகைப் பற்றிய அறிவுசார் ஆக்கங்கள் மறுக்கப்பட்டு, சமமின்மை வெளிப்படுகிறது.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;நம் மொழியிலேயே இணையத்தில் ஆக்கங்களை உருவாக்குவதிலும் பகிர்வதிலும் சில சிக்கல்களை எதிர்நோக்குகிறோம். அவை:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;இணையத்தில் பொருட்களை வாங்கிப் பயன்படுத்துவோரின் கருத்துக்களோ, பொருட்களைப் பற்றிய தகவலோ, இணையச் செயலிகளான செய்தியனுப்பல், வலைப்பூ போன்றவையோ தம் மொழியில் இல்லாமை&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;தேடுபொறிகளையும் பிற கருவிகளையும் கொன்டு வெவ்வேறு மொழிகளில் ஆக்கங்களைத் தேடிப் பழக்கம் இல்லாமை&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;இச்சிக்கல்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்வதன் மூலம், இணையத்தின் பன்மொழிச் சூழலுக்கான தேவைகளையும் அவற்றிற்கான குறைநிறைகளையும் சரிப்படுத்திக்கொள்ள முடியும்.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;நாங்கள் யார்?:&lt;/strong&gt; உலக மொழிகளிலான ஆக்கங்கள் இணையவெளியில் இடம்பெற உதவவும், ஊக்குவிக்கவும் மூன்று ஆய்வு நிறுவனங்கள் கைகோர்த்துள்ளோம். இதை நடைமுறைப்படுத்துவதற்கு முன், நாம் எதிர்கொள்ளும் சிக்கல்களையும் பெறக்கூடிய வாய்ப்புகளையும் நன்கு அறிந்துகொள்வது அவசியம் என உணர்ந்தோம்.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;1. சென்டர் ஃபார் இன்டர்நெட் அன்ட் சொசைட்டி (the Centre for Internet and Society or CIS) என்ற தன்னார்வல நிறுவனம், இணையத்தையும், மின்மயமாக்கத் தொழில்நுட்பங்களையும் பற்றிய ஆய்வுகளை கொள்கை நோக்கிலும், கல்விசார் நோக்கிலும் செய்கிறது. உடற்குறைபாடு உடையோருக்கு மின்மயமாக்கிய உள்ளடக்கம், அறிவைப் பெறும் சூழல், அறிவுசார் சொத்துரிமை, திறந்தவெளி ஆக்கங்கள், இணையவழி ஆளுகை, தொழில்நுட்பச் சீர்திருத்தம், இணையவெளியில் தனியுரிமை, இணையவெளிப் பாதுகாப்பு போன்ற தலைப்புகளில் இந்நிறுவனம் கவனம் செலுத்துகிறது.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;3. ஹூஸ் நாலெட்ஜ் என்ற இயக்கம், உலகளவில் ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட சமூகங்களின் அறிவுசார் ஆக்கங்களை இணையவெளியில் கொண்டு வர முயற்சி எடுக்கிறது.&lt;/p&gt;

        &lt;b&gt;In response to our call for contributions and reflections on ‘Decolonising the Internet’s Languages’ in August, we are delighted to announce that we received 50 submissions, in over 38 languages! We are so overwhelmed and grateful for the interest and support of our many communities around the world; it demonstrates how critical this effort is for all of us. From all these extraordinary offerings, we have selected nine that we will invite and support the contributors to expand further.&lt;/b&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The nine selected contributions will be a significant aspect of the openly licensed State of the Internet’s Languages report to be published mid-2020. In different formats and languages, they span many kinds of language contexts across the world, from many different communities and perspectives. They will form part of a broader narrative combining data and experience, highlighting how limited the current language capacities of the internet are, and how much opportunity there is for making our knowledges available in our many languages.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Caddie Brain, Joel Liddle, Leigh Harris, Graham Wilfred&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As part of a broader movement to increase inclusion and diversity in emojis, Aboriginal people in Central Australia are creating Indigemoji, the first set of Australian Indigenous emojis delivered via a free app. Caddie, Joel, Leigh and Graham aim to describe how to reflect Aboriginal experiences online, to increase the accessibility of Arrernte language in the broader Australian lexicon, to position Arrernte knowledge on digital platforms for future generations of Arrentre speakers and learners, and to contribute more broadly to the decolonisation of the internet.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Claudia Soria&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Claudia will describe “The Digital Language Diversity Project” funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ programme. The project has surveyed the digital use and usability of four European minority languages: Basque, Breton, Karelian and Sardinian. It has also developed a number of instruments that can help speakers’ communities drive the digital life of their languages, in the form of a methodology named “digital language planning”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Donald Flywell Malanga&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Donald will share his experiences conducting two panel discussions with elderly and ten young Ndali People in Chisitu Village based in Misuku Hills, Malawi. He aims to hear their stories and make sense of them relating to how Chindali could be spoken/expressed online, examine the barriers they face in sharing/expressing their language online, and unearth possible solutions to address such barriers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Emna Mizouni&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Emna will interview African and Arab content creators and consumers to share their experiences in posting content in their own language and expose their cultures. She will reach out to different ethnicities from Africa to gather data on the reasons they use the “colonial languages” on the internet and the burdens they face, whether technical such as internet connectivity and accessibility, lack of devices, social or cultural barriers, etc.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Ishan Chakraborty&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ishan will explore the experiences of individuals who identify themselves as both disabled and queer, and who are not visible online in Bengali. Online research papers and academic works in Bengali are significantly limited, and even more so in the case of works on marginalities and intersections. One of the most effective ways of making online material accessible to persons with visual disability is through audio material, and Ishan will explore some of these possibilities.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Joaquín Yescas Martínez&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Joaquin will be describing the free software, open technology initiatives and the sharing philosophy of “compartencia” in his community of Mixe and Zapotec peoples in Mexico. He will explore initiatives such as Xhidza Penguin School, an app to learn the language online, and learning workshops to look at new methodologies for sharing and using the language. It is not only a means of communication but it also encompasses a different way of understanding the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Kelly Foster&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Kelly will draw attention to the work being done to revitalise indigenous languages and the struggles to represent the Nation Languages of the Caribbean and its diasporas in structured data and on Wikipedia. She aims to have the native names of the islands, locations and indigenous peoples on Wikidata, labelled with their own language so she can generate a map of the Caribbean with as many native names as possible. But the language of the Taino people of the islands that are now called Jamaican, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Haiti has been labelled as extinct, as are the people, by European researchers. Though a victim of the first European genocide of the Caribbean, they live on in the tongues and blood of people who are more often racialised as Black and Latinx.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Paska Darmawan&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As a first-generation college student who did not understand English, Paska had difficulties in finding educational, inspiring content about LGBTQIA issues in their native language, let alone positive content about the local LGBTQIA community. They plan to share a mapping of available Indonesian digital LGBTQIA content, whether it be in the form of Wikipedia articles, websites, social media accounts, or any other online media.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;
&lt;h4&gt;&lt;em&gt;Uda Deshpriya&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Uda will explore the lack of feminist content on the internet in Sinhala and Tamil. Mainstream human rights discussions take place in English and leaves out the majority of Sri Lankans. Women’s rights discourse remains even more centralized. Despite the fact that all primary criminal and civil courts work in local languages, statutes and decided cases are not available in Sinhala and Tamil, including Sri Lanka’s Constitution and its amendments. This extends to content creation through both text and art, with significant barriers of keyboard and input methods.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Nishant Shah will be participating in this event as part of our collaboration  with the Inter Asia Cultural Studies consortium, to launch a new  research cluster around trans-cine-media in the global context along  with Kim SoYoung and Earl Jackson. He will speak on "The Asian Intercourse : Reimagining the Inter-Asia moment through ‘net-porn’ In networks".&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The conference is  a response to what we see as a new epistemic shift, a new possibility  for the reading of Korean cinema and Korean media texts. The previous  “discovery” or “acceptance” of Im Kwon-Taek at Cannes, and the  ambivalent Japanese obsession with “Winter Sonata” are moments in a  recognition of Korean textual achievements that, at best, maintain a  hierarchical (and highly circumscribed) “tolerance” of Korean cultural  production. The subsequent achievements of other directors such as Pak  Chan-wook and Kim Ki-duk deepened and expanded the hermeneutic situation  internationally – a  tendency that has continued in recent European conferences dedicated to  Korean auteurs and most recently, Kim Ki-duk’s receiving the Golden  Lion at the Venice Film Festival.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="1" style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Moreover,  Korean transformations of Japanese media texts have advanced a new kind  of alchemical conversation across media that engages both the present  and the past in new, multi-vocal ways. Beyond these mass-media events  that can capture the attention of journalists, is the years of work of  the scholars involved with the decentering of film history and canon in  the work of scholars such the late Paul Willemen. And in addition to the  “external” legitimation of the international film festival circuit are  the internal developments within Korean cinema – namely the recent resurgence of a vital and engaged independent cinema – in  both fiction documentary films. These events create an environment in  which we can return anew to Korean cinema- past, present, and future – to read and realize in ways not-here-to-fore possible.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="1" style="text-align: justify; "&gt;These  readings will include taking Korean cinema seriously on its own terms,  but also to set Korean cinema in dialogue with other East Asian Cinemas  in a global context.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="1" style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The  outcome of the conference will be contributed to the project entitled  as “A Compendium of History of Korean Cinema” sponsored by National  Research Foundation of Korea.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Mapping Digital Humanities in India</title>

        &lt;b&gt;As part of the research enquiry in the field of Digital Humanities (DH), this mapping exercise aims to provide an overview of key people, institutions and emerging literature in the field, and identify some of the pertinent questions and challenges to better locate and contextualise the work done in DH in India.&lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The field of Digital Humanities (DH) has today emerged as a space for much interdisciplinary work in knowledge production and innovation in India. At a time when the arts and humanities are perceived to be in a state of crisis thereby calling for them to demonstrate their relevance, the move towards the ‘digital’ is seen as an interesting development, away from traditional methods and objects of research enquiry. The growth of networked environments and proliferation of digital technologies particularly in education in the last couple of decades has several implications for new humanities scholarship.  However, what is DH as a field, what are its historical and disciplinary moorings, its significance for new research and pedagogy, and more importantly how can we locate or contextualize it with respect to work in India have been some preliminary challenges to developing a further understanding of the field.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Historically the basis of DH lies in humanities computing, driven by the need to process and disseminate large sets of data generated by research. DH in the West has seen two distinct phases – the computational and the digital turn; the first largely characterized by the process of digitization itself, and the second seeing the internet become a space for production and sharing of multi-dimensional forms of knowledge, and moving away from traditional text-based models. The present phase sees digital technology as an integral part of the process of knowledge production, wherein objects and methods of enquiry already inhabit the digital space. In India, these three phases have been simultaneous rather than successive, which gives rise to additional challenges in summarizing the field. There is also the inherited separation between the ‘digital’ and the ‘humanities’, with the former being in some sense inaccessible to certain groups or classes of society for various reasons. This problematises the notion of the ‘digital’ as a post- gender, race, and class space. Tracing a historical trajectory of the development of DH in India would therefore be imperative, to see how it mediates this space between the traditional humanities and changes that are imminent with the advent of digital technology, and whether this discourse has been inclusive of all groups of people.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In the context of higher education in India, the challenges are multiple. The ‘digital divide’ still persists, which requires us to consistently re-imagine pedagogy and curricular resources that employ technology. Policy initiatives to integrate ICTs in education and large–scale projects on digitization are some efforts in trying to address the access question. Developing teaching-learning materials for a socially diverse and multi-lingual classroom, integrating archival material and training researchers and teachers in using new kinds of technology are some other areas that need intervention. More importantly, how do students or young people negotiate with these changes in the learning environment is a case in point. The present generation has the ubiquitous reputation of being ‘digital natives’ and therefore already possessing the access, skills and competence required in mediating both worlds. With increased access to technology, the role of youth in social change through participation in civil society and the political process is also being recognized. Today throughout the world, the importance of developing the potential of youth for social change has been emphasized by policy makers, institutions and societies at large. In the Indian context, where 20% of the population&lt;a href="#fn1" name="fr1"&gt;[1] &lt;/a&gt;consists of people between the ages of 15-24, this factor acquires even more significance. This number is also said to increase to 40% by 2016.According to a more recent report commissioned by the UN Global Urban Youth Research Network, there are 430 million young people in the age group of 15 – 34 years in India. The report also includes a survey on political participation by youth, in which 71% of urban youth (aged 18-34) said they are moderately interested in politics, and attributed this change to education and increased media exposure.&lt;a href="#fn2" name="fr2"&gt;[2] &lt;/a&gt;The National Youth Policy (2003) emphasises the need for the active involvement of youth in the political process, through their increased representation in civic bodies and also stresses that young people be provided with the requisite knowledge, skills and capacities towards this end. Higher education then is a crucial space to address these gaps in knowledge and skills that would contribute towards this development. The importance of technology in facilitating this process cannot be ignored, but then how do we see its role beyond that of access and skill-building, to fostering critical engagement with questions of socio-political concern would be imperative. The ‘digital classroom’ has today fostered new forms of iteration, sharing and collaboration. More importantly, what then is the perception of the youth of the ‘digital’ and how do they see its relevance to the processes of knowledge production, learning and change would be key questions for DH scholarship.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Under the larger rubric of youth, technology and higher education, this proposed mapping exercise will try to examine some of the broader questions that are central to defining and setting the agenda for further work in DH in India. The study shall span several institutions and disciplines, but would focus on the demographic of youth in higher education. Some specific areas of interest would be:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Youth and technology&lt;/b&gt;: studies on how young people engage with collaborative multimedia technologies today, both within and outside the classroom, what are the tools and devices at their disposal and the creation of new learning environments in higher education. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Histories of the present&lt;/b&gt;: studies mapping the digital landscape today and its antecedents, and looking at the emergence of the techno-social subject as a focus of the research enquiry. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Technology and Institutions&lt;/b&gt;: studies to survey and assess existing digitization efforts in India, creation of open access archives and new resources, particularly materials in Indian languages and the need for integration of content, new curricular initiatives and pedagogic strategies. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;The project consists of interviews with key people and an overview of institutions and emerging literature in the field, as well as short-term commissioned research on emerging digital habits, socio-political participation, citizenship and identity politics and new modes of research and pedagogy in the digital humanities in India. This exercise is being conducted with the collaboration and support of the &lt;b&gt;Higher Education Innovation and Research Applications (HEIRA) programme at the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore.&lt;/b&gt; HEIRA-CSCS has previously collaborated with CIS on a four-year programme in selected undergraduate colleges on enhancing the &lt;i&gt;quality of access&lt;/i&gt; to higher education by disadvantaged students. The present mapping exercise also aims to build on some of the learning from this programme, particularly with respect to the digital and linguistic divide in higher education.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;About the Conference&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The financial crisis revealed its first signs over five years ago, on August 9, 2007, when BNP Paribus suspended payment on three of its funds. It has since morphed into the deepest US and then world economic crisis since the Great Depression. The “green shoots” of recovery of some Third World economies, that the IMF had acclaimed in 2010, had withered within a year. By 2012 it was admitted that the “world recovery had stalled”, as even the handful of large, better-performing, developing economies slowed. But, ever upbeat except when imposing adjustment, the IMF predicts not only an improved 2013 but continual yearly growth over the following four years as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet, the world’s largest economy remains stuck. While even the weak economic growth in the USA looks good by comparison with Europe, measured unemployment remains around 8%. Home loss, homelessness, poverty and hunger remain at their highest levels in decades. Nor is there a prospect of a recovery across Europe. The northern economies, and especially Germany, that until now have performed better in the core- periphery division of the continent, have stagnated, inevitable perhaps given the prolonged implosion of the economies of their most important foreign customers. There is a particularly severe crisis of youth unemployment. And the stagnation of the economies of the First World has caused a sharp slowing of growth in their BRIC counterparts and the few other better-performing Third World economies that the recovery Pollyannas had projected for several years as the engines that would drive the world rebound. Popular discontent has manifested itself in varieties of ways, from the Arab Spring to the renewal of Latin American left radicalism. In the global North, it has erupted in the form of the movements of the Indignados in Spain, Occupy Wall Street in the USA, and popular resistance in Greece. Whilst the Greek political system has been transformed beyond recognition but without resolution of the ongoing economic and political crisis, action in the rest of the North has appeared to have limited lifespan and effects, even with polls showing very high dissatisfaction with the current economic and political situation. It is striking how no broadly supported political movements have arisen, successfully promoting and engaging in a struggle for alternative economic policies. And, in their absence, finance has slowly , if not rapidly, and surely restored its economic, political and ideological hegemony over everything from our daily lives to our longer-term prospects, from the environment to our social and economic prospects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ongoing economic and political crises place two related questions on history’s agenda. In the face of the dismal failure of the continuing, mostly overt neoliberal policies to resolve the deep problems, what alternative economic strategies should be pursued? And a more radical form of that same question, are alternative economic structures and an entirely different system of economic structures and practices necessary? The second question is concerns the sorts of actions that must be engaged to move the political process on to a path of alternative outcomes, from mild reforms to major transformation (and the connection between the two).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 2013 Annual Conference of IIPPE will focus on these questions. In doing so, it will need to acknowledge: the breadth and depth of discontent and the more or less spontaneous protest and conflict against the consequences of the crisis; how struggles have been conditioned by the crisis and the failure to resolve it without either determining their form and strength, their diversity and their complex dependence on non-economic factors; and the lack of strength, unity and coherence of oppositions and posing of alternatives. In this light, the conference will bring together scholars from all strands of political economy and heterodox economics, in seeking to engage debate with political parties and other progressive organisations in order to explain the incidence of struggles and how they might best be supported in bringing about broader, deeper and more unified responses to the crisis. In particular, it will be necessary to interrogate how continuing general conceptualisations, such as financialisation and neoliberalism, can (or cannot) be put to these purposes, when set against the diverse experiences of, and response to, the crisis.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Living in the Archival Moment </title>

        &lt;b&gt;The archive has been and continues to be a key concept in Digital Humanities discourse, particularly in India. The importance of the archive to knowledge production in the Humanities, the implication of changes in archival practice with the advent of electronic publishing and digitisation, and the focus on curation as a critical and creative process are some aspects of the debate that this blog post looks at. &lt;/b&gt;
        
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;In a rather delightful essay titled ‘Unpacking my Library’, published in 1968, Walter Benjamin dwells upon the many nuances of the art of collecting — books in this particular case — on everything from the sometimes impulsive acquisition to the processes of careful selection and classification which go into creating a library. This figure of the collector and practice of collecting are important to our understanding of a central concept in Digital Humanities - the archive - particularly as it occupies a predominant space in the imagination of the field in India, and processes of knowledge production and the history of disciplines in general. The influx of digital technologies into the archival space in the last decade has been an impetus for the large scale digitisation of material, but it has also thrown up several challenges for traditional archival practice, including the preservation of analogue material, the problems of categorising and interpreting large volumes of data, and the gradual disappearance or re-definition of the traditional figure of the collector — a concern echoed across several spaces extending from private online archival efforts to large collaborative knowledge repositories like the Wikipedia. &amp;nbsp;With the questions that the Digital Humanities seems to have posed to traditional notions of authorship or subject expertise, the ‘digital humanist’, when we imagine such a person, can be seen as a reinvention of this figure of the collector — a curator of materials and traces, here of course, digital traces.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The concept of the archive has been important to knowledge production and particularly the development of academic disciplines; whether driven by concerns of the state or the impulses of the market, there have been different ways of defining and understanding the archive, not only as a documentary record of history, but as a metaphor for collective memory and remembrance which includes technology in its very imagination. One of the most elaborate formulations of the archive has been in the work of Jacques Derrida, where apart from proposing the death and preservation drives as primary to the archival impulse, he also highlights the process of archiviation, or the technical process of archive-building that shapes history and memory. Michel Foucault in his concept of the archive looks at it as ‘a system of discursivity which establishes the possibility of what can be said’,&lt;a name="fr1" href="#fn1"&gt;[1]&lt;/a&gt;thus pointing to the archive as a space not just of preservation but also production, with an impact on the process of knowledge creation. There is today a consensus, at least in its academic understanding that archives cannot be relegated to being self-contained linear spaces of objective historical record, but that archival practice itself has political implications in terms of how collective memory and history, or as indicated by Foucault, &lt;em&gt;histories&lt;/em&gt; are preserved and retold through a process of careful selection. Disciplines themselves may therefore be seen as archives of knowledge, and one may stretch this analogy to say that they may also appear as self-contained spaces with restrictions on entry for different ways of remembering and reading. More importantly, the question of what constitutes the archive and what objects or materials may be archived reflects a larger debate about problems with the definition of disciplines and shifting disciplinary boundaries.&lt;a name="fr2" href="#fn2"&gt;[2]&lt;/a&gt;The issue of access is what several archival and digitisation projects in the early phase of Digital Humanities in the West seemingly sought to address, by ‘opening up’ and animating the archive in some sense through the use of digital technologies, which has allowed one to envisage a model of the networked or conceptual archive developed through a process of sharing and collaboration. However, as is apparent, the conditions of access to such archives and their interpretation have not been problematised enough, if at all, particularly with respect to how they contribute to generating new kinds of knowledge or scholarship. &lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;While the focus of Digital Humanities debates in the West now seem to primarily encompass methods of visualising data that the archive is an important source for, in the Indian context it is the ‘incompleteness of the archive’ that still seems to be a bone of contention. Many scholars and practitioners we spoke to see archive creation as one of the key questions of Digital Humanities as it has emerged in India, and the possibilities and challenges that this brings to the fore, (particularly in terms of access to rare materials and extending these debates to regional languages) as something that the field will need to contend with at some point. The role of digital technologies in fostering this activity of archive-building is stressed in these debates. In an earlier monograph titled Archives and Access produced as part of CIS-RAW, Dr. Aparna Balachandran and Dr. Rochelle Pinto trace a material history of archival practice in India, specifically looking at conflicts and debates surrounding state and colonial archives, and the politics of access, preservation and digitisation. The monograph also points towards in some way the move of the archive from being solely the prerogative of the state to now being within the reach of the individual, engendered by increased access to technology, and the ‘publicness’ that the visual nature of the internet fosters. However they also talk of the possibility of continuing forms of state or market control over the archive precisely through the internet and digital technologies, with the nature of individual access and use again being mediated through digitisation. Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Documentation Officer with the archives at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata who was also part of the Archives and Access project, speaks about this change. From a time even twenty years ago, when it was difficult to define the archive, it has slowly transformed into a practice that encompasses various methods of digitisation and has become increasingly personal. While digitisation may have resolved the problems of physically accessing archives to a large extent, it may not always be the best option, as the archival or analogue material needs to be in good condition so as to make for good digitised copies, thus emphasising the need for preservation. The growth of private collections, which create new kinds of intellectual and nostalgic spaces, have also been important in this shift to archiving the personal and the everyday, though in many instances such material may not be available for public use or consumption. The publicness or hyper-visibility that the visual nature of the internet and digital technologies accords to the archive is seen tied to a narrative of loss here, and against the rhetoric of preservation which is still in many spaces deemed to be the primary function and imagination of the archive.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The increased availability of space for data accumulation due to digital technologies also contributes to a ‘problem of excess’, and that is where curation and building new kinds of tools come in as a critical and creative exercise. Dr. Amlan Dasgupta, Professor of English and director of the School of Cultural Texts and Records, Jadavpur University reiterates this opinion. He talks about the internet as fostering an ‘age of altruism’, where the proliferation of technological gadgets has brought about a culture of voluntarily sharing materials online. This of course challenges notions of authority and brings forth the problems of the unarranged library which Benjamin’s essay also points towards, but the archive can be used as a metaphor to understand how notions of authorship and authority are being challenged as is apparent in the Digital Humanities discourse. The theory-practice divide is also something that ails this particular domain like many others; not only is there an inadequate understanding of how to access and use the archive on the part of students and researchers alike, but there is a lack of standardisation of the practice of archive management and the science itself, in terms of metadata, problems of ownership and copyright, and most importantly inadequate infrastructure, training and expertise on preservation of analogue materials. While it may not be within the ambit of digital humanities to address all of these questions, the renewed interest in archival practice and the diversification of its modes is something is that would continue to be an integral aspect of its practice. In fact what digitisation has also led to is diversity in the modes of documentation itself, and the larger process of archiving, which has important implications for the kinds of questions one may ask within certain disciplinary formations, history being an important example. The nature of material in the archive is never quite the same, so is the manner of working with and interpreting them. Dr. Indira Chowdhury, historian and faculty member at the Srishti School of Art, Media and Design, Bangalore and the Centre for Public History (CPH) speaks of the changes that digital technologies have produced in studying oral history, specifically in terms of recording and interpretation of interviews. The mode of documentation, particularly the digital, adds a new layer to the manner in which the voice, sounds or even silence is recorded or interpreted. Although there are still some basic but crucial obstacles such as with transcription, the digital space may allow for tools that help with more nuanced interpretation of recorded material, and large volumes of it; a possibility that CPH is looking into at the moment. One of the approaches of Digital Humanities may be address these knowledge gaps through critical tool-building, in terms of how one may work with different ways of reading and interpreting material.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The digital archive is one space where many of these questions about the process of archive-creation and the separation between preservation and production that is often made in the existing discourse come into conflict, thus inflating the definition of the term much more. New technologies of publishing, the proliferation of electronic databases and growth of networks that in turn encourage production and the increasing amount of born-digital materials then present new questions for the concept of the archive and scholarship.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The role of technology has been significant in the development of the  concept of the archive; in fact the archive, in its very nature would be  a technological object, or a space where one can trace a history of the  disciplines in relation to technology. The introduction of the digital  has added yet another dimension to this question. Dr. Ravi Sundaram,  Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, who also  initiated the Sarai programme speaks of how the advent of the digital  has brought about several shifts in the imagination of the archive,  which he sees as two distinct phases. Sarai was one of the early models  of a concept driven, networked archive, based on a culture of ‘mailing  lists’ that built conversations around topics which in themselves  constituted the archive. The shifts came with Web 2.0 with which  archiving the everyday became a possibility, given the access to  inexpensive gadgets and the pervasiveness of social media. While the  model of the networked, curated and public archive still has valence  today, a significant next step would be to see how one can extend these  questions to thinking differently about the archive, by developing new  protocols for entering, sharing and circulation of material, and  producing new knowledge or concepts around these ideas. This would be  crucial in terms of generating research and scholarship around the  archive itself as a concept, and realising the full potential of  network-generated information. Another pertinent question is that of  infrastructure, which is a political question as well. The investment on  infrastructure for the archive is determined by different kinds of  interests and will play an important role in how archival efforts will  ultimately develop. As Dr. Sundaram reiterates, the point to note is  that new archival efforts are not only general repositories, but  critical interventions in themselves. They foster new kinds of  visibilities, like the Pad.ma archive for example which works with  existing footage and reinvents or adds new layers of meaning to it  through annotations and citations. This also opens up possibilities for  new kinds of questions to be asked about existing material. Private  archival efforts, many initiated by individuals are also becoming more  niche and specific, driven by a specific research agenda, public  interest in conservation or as critical and creative interventions in a  particular area. Some examples of this are the Sound and Picture  Archives for Research on Women (SPARROW), Pad.ma and Indiancine.ma, the  Indian Memory project and Osianama. In some of these examples, the  archive may be used as more of a metaphor rather than a description or  classificatory term, because of the layers of meaning that they generate  around an existing object or ‘trace’. However, while entering the  digital space may have enabled more sharing and dissemination of  material, how much of these efforts also make their way into larger  civil society and policy debates, scholarship and pedagogy is a crucial  question. Arjun Appadurai, in an essay titled ‘Archive and Aspiration’,  which was also reproduced as part of a research art project,&lt;a name="fr3" href="#fn3"&gt;[3]&lt;/a&gt; traces  the growth of the migrant archive and how electronic mediation shapes  collective memory and aspiration. He points out that ‘The archive as a  deliberate project is based on the recognition that all documentation is  a form of intervention and, thus, that documentation does not simply  precede intervention, but is its first step. Since all archives are  collections of documents (whether graphic, artifactual or recorded in  other forms), this means that the archive is always a meta-intervention.  This further means that archives are not only about memory (and the  trace or record) but about the work of the imagination, about some sort  of social project. These projects seemed, for a while, to have become  largely bureaucratic instruments in the hands of the state, but today we  are once again reminded that the archive is an everyday tool. Through  the experience of the migrant, we can see how archives are conscious  sites of debate and desire. And with the arrival of electronic forms of  mediation, we can see more clearly that collective memory is  interactively designed and socially produced." In another essay  reproduced as part of the same project, Wolfgang Ernst talks about the  change in the notion of archive from ‘archival space’ to ‘archival  time’, in a digital culture, in which the key is the dynamics of the  permanent transmission of data. Cyberspace or the internet, according to  Ernst produces a new kind of memory culture, which is devoid of  organisational memory that is essentially the premise of the traditional  text-based archive. He says "In cyber ‘space’ the notion of the archive  has already become an anachronistic, hindering metaphor; it should  rather be described in topological, mathematical or geometrical terms,  replacing emphatic memory by transfer (data migration) in permanence.  The old rule that only what has been stored can be located is no longer  applicable.13 Beyond the archive in its old ‘archontic’ quality, the  Internet generates, in this sense, a new memory culture. Digitalization  of analogous stored material means trans-archivization. Linked to the  Internet rather than to traditional state bureaucracies, there is no  organizational memory any more but a definition by circulating states,  constructive rather than re-constructive. Assuming that the matter of  memory is really only an effect of the application of techniques of  recall, there is no memory. The networked data bases mark the beginning  of a relationship to knowledge that dissolves the hierarchy associated  with the classical archive."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;One can therefore trace the definite shift in the concept and nature of  the archive from being a static repository to a critical intervention  and creative exercise, and technology being quite integral to its  imagination. Most significantly perhaps, the change has been one from  the notion of record to that of affect. Archive-building as an affective  practice, which has an impact on how knowledge is produced, organised  and disseminated is a crucial aspect of meaning-making practices.  Related to this is another issue in terms of the amount of data that is  available in the archives, which demands new protocols of access and  collaboration, and the role of curation in making such data relevant and  comprehensible. The notion of the archive or as in this case data as an  affective object becomes pertinent here. The problem of excess  mentioned by many of the scholars and practitioners would be relevant to  the question of big data or big social data; accessing or interpreting  such large volumes of information would require critical tools and new  kinds of architecture. These shifts also relocate the figure of the  collector from traditional practices to new ways of visualising  collections and the art of collecting itself, which are now beyond the  scope of the human subject. The matter of immediate import here would  then be the changes in modes of reading and writing that are brought  about by the proliferation of and engagement with big social data. How  do we read data, what are changes in reading practices, how do they  affect writing and visualisation and what is the nature of the reader  thus constructed form some of the areas of exploration for the Digital  Humanities, and will be taken up in the forthcoming blogs.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt; In the first of a three-part study Ananth Padmanabhan examines the "John Doe" orders that courts have passed against ISPs, which entertainment companies have used to block websites.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; The second Institute on Internet and Society is being held in Pune from February 11 to 17.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; CIS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KIIT University and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences for furthering Odia Wikipedia.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Dr. Nishant Shah co-authored a chapter on video games in a book published by Palestinian Art Court-al Hoash.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; Sneha gives an overview of the research enquiry in the  field of Digital Humanities in her blog post on Mapping Digital  Humanities in India.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt; In the first of the insightful seven part series, Gautam Bhatia  looks at surveillance and the right to privacy in India from a  constitutional perspective, tracing its genealogy through Supreme Court  case law and compares it with the law in the USA.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;The National Resource Kit team is pleased to bring you its research for the states of Tripura, Nagaland and Chattisgarh.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;CIS-A2K team signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Christ University in Bangalore to introduce Wikipedia in classrooms. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;The Access to Knowledge narrative report capturing the work done by CIS-A2K team in the first ten months of the grant along with its strategy for the next 1 year is published.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Last month we organised the Seventh Privacy Round-table in collaboration with FICCI, DSCI, and Privacy International in Delhi. The developments are captured in a report by Elonnai Hickok.&lt;/li&gt;

So far we have organised seven privacy round-tables and drafted the Privacy (Protection) Bill. This month we bring you a report from the seventh privacy round-table held in Delhi, and an analysis on why Facebook is more dangerous than government spying. As part of its project (funded by Citizen Lab, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto and support from the IDRC) on mapping cyber security actors in South Asia and South East Asia we did an interview with Namita A Malhotra, a researcher and lawyer from Alternative Law Forum.     <title>Rethinking Conditions of Access</title>

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The advent and pervasive growth of the internet and digital technologies in the last couple of decades have&amp;nbsp;caused several changes in the way we now imagine education and processes of learning, both within and outside the classroom. The increasing use of digital tools, platforms and methods in classroom pedagogy, and the access for students to resources through online and collaborative repositories such as Wikipedia have&amp;nbsp;led to a change in not just teaching practices, but also in the learning environment, which has now become more open, iterative and participatory in nature. While increased access to the internet may be one factor contributing to this change, the conditions of such access – how it is made available, to whom and for what purpose – still remain contentious. As per recent statistics, India has more than 200 million internet users, but as several studies on online users have illustrated, the numbers are hardly indicative of the nature of online engagement. The problem of the ‘digital divide’, though much debated and addressed, still persists in India, as in several other countries, with lack of infrastructure and low broadband speed being two among several reasons for the slow move in bridging this gap.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;div&gt;Last year, the Digital Inclusion Index map indicated India as only BRICS country ‘at extreme risk’ on the ‘digital divide’&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The problem of the digital divide itself has largely been understood as one of access to the internet and/or broadly digital technologies, but the conditions of this access, in terms of the nature of its use and adaptability to a dynamic and ever-changing technological landscape is something that needs to be looked at critically, in order to provide a more nuanced understanding of the problem itself, and its inherent conflicts. The technological landscape we inhabit today is quite diverse, and rather multi-layered, as a result of which conditions of access also differ across spaces and in degrees. The problematisation, therefore, will need to be more qualitative and nuanced, to take into account several variables spread over social, cultural and economic categories.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The assumption of the internet, as an open and accessible, therefore neutral space, has also been questioned time and again, with the latest debates around net neutrality being illustrative of this conflict. Though there is a growing interest in exploring and using the democratic potential that the internet offers, as demonstrated by several forms of online social activism and the growth of open access digital knowledge repositories and public archival spaces, there are also pertinent concerns about privacy, accessibility and the quality of online interaction and content. A large part of this uncertainty and the conflicts we see around access and regulation may be attributed to the fact that the nature of the internet, or the digital itself as concept, method or space has not been adequately explored or theorised. As a public sphere, it often reprises certain systemic forms of injustice and marginalisation seen offline, and conflates them with notions pertaining to the personal. As such, social, economic and linguistic barriers mediate the access we have to certain kinds and forms of discourse online, thereby making physical access the first step towards being part of the labyrinthian world that is the internet.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;div&gt;How can e-learning start, when the general access is very fragmented?&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;These conflicts are present in the classroom and other spaces and processes of learning as well, where traditionally there has been resistance to the use of technology, and particularly the internet as it is seen as a disturbance or a deterrent to learning. But technology has always been a part of the classroom, and now with the mobile phone becoming ubiquitous, it is indeed difficult to imagine that a student who has access to such a device would be disconnected from the internet, or not look toward other digital tools and methods to engage with, for educational or recreational purposes. However, indeed, how much of this engagement is effectively connected to learning is still a bone of contention, and is yet to be explored adequately.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;What are the changes in the learning environment that the advent of digital technologies has produced? What challenges do they pose for both teachers and students? And what are the possible solutions that these areas of research are opening up? A more integrated and inclusive approach in designing methods and tools for use in the classroom could be one way of making issues and conflicts in this space more transparent. Several efforts in education technology and experiments in digital learning have focused precisely on this aspect. The sheer visibility and vastness of the internet offers several possibilities in terms of access to materials, tools and resources online. Several large-scale efforts in digitisation made by both the state and public organisations are attempts to utilise this potential, and they speak of the growing interest in making material available online for both classroom teaching and research.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The growth of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is an example of the&amp;nbsp;fervour of&amp;nbsp;online platforms of learning, which provide students across the world with an access to teaching and course material from some of the best institutions. However, there have been, at least in their earlier versions, several critiques of these platforms, as well, precisely because they replicate a certain classroom teaching model that is not accessible to students everywhere. This urges us to revisit the premise of such structures.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The ‘digital turn’ in the last couple of decades has engendered several changes in the way knowledge is now produced, disseminated and consumed by people located in different areas. It has also created a need to constantly rethink existing systems of learning we have in place, to plug the gaps that develop between people, skills and resources. It is only through more attempts to problematise the notion of access qualitatively, and to better understand the role of digital technologies and the internet in terms of changes in learning environments, that we may be able to understand and utilise its potential to the best.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Habits of Living Thinkathon — Day 1 Live Blog: Introduction</title>

        &lt;b&gt;The Habits of Living Thinkathon (Thinking Marathon) is being hosted by the Centre for Internet and Society in Bengaluru from September 26 to 29, 2012.  The event brings together a range of multidisciplinary scholars and practitioners. The workshop hopes to generate dialogue on the notion of surrogate structures that have become the visible landmarks of contemporary life, and produce new conceptual frameworks to help us understand networks and the ways in which they inform our everyday practice and thought.&lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;a href="https://cis-india.org/raw/digital-humanities/blogs/habits-of-living/bangalore-thinkathon"&gt;The Habits of Living Thinkathon &lt;/a&gt;took off today with an introduction by Wendy Chun, who led us through a critical review of the relevant academic theory on networks and network analysis to help us understand how ubiquitous networks have become as a method of conceptualizing and understanding the world around us.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;But why networks?  What is the explanatory power of networks?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Networks enable us to map the unmappable, to trace the complex, unimaginably big structures that post-modernism left us with, and to be able to define our own unique existence. However, what becomes apparent is that we seem to be forever mapping, but we are no more able to realize our place within the capitalist society we live in, much less escape it. Rather than resolving them, mapping leads to the generation of more networks, and as we become more proficient at identifying and mapping networks, the more static they become. As Wendy Chun says, "We seem to be forever moving and never changing."&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Continuing on, Chun asks: why has the network become the end rather than the beginning of the answer? What drives the impetus to see un-seeable networks everywhere? Chun presents the Thinkathon's theme of &lt;i&gt;Habits of Living&lt;/i&gt; as an epistemological framework to grapple with these questions. For Chun, the 'habit' works as a particularly useful heuristic to unpack and deconstruct some of the central components of the network. A habit is something that is acquired through time and then forgotten about as it moves from voluntary to involuntary. In fact, a habit can start as something we do and become something we are. With this in mind, we are asked to think: how has the network become habitualised and what are the implications of this? What is the importance of time in the mapping and lived experiences of networks? In looking at networks from this meta-level, we can ask: why do we think networks make us forever moving but never changing?&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Chun's presentation is received well, but one concern gets noted early on. This discourse of the 'network' privileges a very particular Western subjectivity, one which may not be applicable to collectivist cultures where communities have &lt;i&gt;always&lt;/i&gt; existed with network structures. What becomes apparent is that we need to start collecting alternate discussions and input from a non-Western understanding of a network in order to truly understand what it is to live in a network society.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Following Wendy's talk, Nishant Shah continues the discussion on networks by contributing several other crucial epistemological interventions to begin our consideration of the &lt;i&gt;Habits of Living&lt;/i&gt;. Nishant begins by asserting that we — perhaps naively — want to believe that networks have the innate ability to generate change. The way we commonly view networks, especially in a post-Arab Spring world, is with the understanding that the network is the panacea for all of our social ills. However, the body of the network is the only problem that the network can solve. That is to say, the network can only produce an account of itself; it cannot be used to create understandings of things outside of its own boundaries.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Nishant briefly reviews the recent "Northeast Exodus" from the global tech city of Bengaluru, in which the dissemination of SMS messages within various networks caused a panic. The knowledge that moved through the networks terrified people before real information on the events could be consumed. Nishant shows how events like these cause people to claim that something has &lt;i&gt;gone wrong&lt;/i&gt; with the network, which is particularly worrying for the state, as how can they fix an issue in a network that they cannot see? Further unpacking this scenario, Nishant shows how the minute the network becomes visible, it is a crisis.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Participants expressed concern about the use of 'network' in this discourse. What actually does the 'network' describe — can it stand as a heuristic for so many different relations? Additionally, what is the truth that the network seeks to expose or reveal? Is there an actual truth that can be unearthed through the network?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Nishant responded that many of these questions will hopefully be answered over the next four days of the Thinkathon — and we are definitely looking forwards to it!&lt;/p&gt;

        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Wendy Chun&lt;/b&gt; talked to us today about what it means to be a friend. She began with a brief overview of network theory, with a focus on the dilemmas of the constant mapping. Moving on, she asked us to think about how networks are related to habits, as habits focus us on the duration of events. This is important for the understanding of networks, as networks require the constant generation of associated events that seem stable. Wendy then asked us to think about the difference between communities and networks, and helped us to think about the extent that networks are imagined (in Benedict Anderson’s sense of the imagined). Throughout this discussion, she continues to come back to the theme of “you,” the idea that networks enable us not only to see ourselves and our place in relation to other nodes in the network, but that simultaneous access of a network, a moment of “we,” will actually cause the network to fall into crisis,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Using this “you” framework, Wendy moves onto a discussion of the internet and how it has moved from being seen as a anonymous free space to a semi-private space where freedom stems from private authentication by others in your network. It is at this point that she asks us how we understand the idea of “friend”; are friendships mutual bonds created for support in times of crisis, or are they sometimes one-way affections where the act of requesting friendship creates the connection? How much has friendship become about broadcasting our connections—our place in the network?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Cyber friendship, especially in the Facebook understanding of “friend,” becomes a method that we can use to understand our strange relationship with safety on online spaces—we desire security, and want to trust and authenticate our relationships with friends, but by pursuing this we can often put our friends into danger, or at least into realms that may not always be seen as “safe”, which now is often interpreted as “private.” For example, by “liking” a friend’s link on Facebook, we create tangible information for Facebook to collect and use about both our friends and ourselves. This method of capturing data only works when you are enmeshed in a network of friends. If our need for safety/privacy is what places in danger on the Internet, it is not security that tames networks by personalizing them that will help us; instead, we need to understand and accept that intimacy and danger in online spaces go hand-in-hand.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;As a finishing note, Wendy describes to us a phishing attack that she suffered. After clicking a link sent to her by a friend on Facebook, she sent phishing spam to all of her friends—all of the members of her network. This event created a moment of understanding for her, as she realized that her spam messages reminded her friends that they were part of her network, and that she liked them enough to put them at risk.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Participant discussion began with a focus on how theory becomes implicated into networks, and how networks can be used to give oversights of theory. Participants asked: what does theorizing networks do to the networks, and the members in the networks? Can Facebook be seen as theory, particularly in the ideas of the existence of events without witnesses and how friendships are created and understood?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Participants also pointed out that it is wrong to be suspicious of organizations like Facebook, because it is not Facebook that betrays you but your friends. This is the implicit agreement of Facebook friendship—the agreement to be friends implicates the transmission of secrecy/vulnerability. Machines cannot betray, but humans, friends, can and often do, even in ways that may be involuntary.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Further discussion focused on both how friendships and application suggestions give us the ability to understand how we are building and presenting ourselves. This two-way communication with technologies that implicate networks puts us into a state of permanent crisis where we must continue to be active to connect, as connecting becomes the main activity of becoming and staying networked. This moved into a discussion on the creation of traces of networks that are constantly in motion, and constantly on the verge of disappearing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Wendy’s discussion of friendship as an often one-way activity, particularly on Facebook where one member must request friendship with another, was a completely new way of thinking about the essence of friendship for me. How much does this cyber, “Facebook” method of creating friendship through the declaration of association cut into the real world? Are nonhuman agreements of friendship (i.e.: Facebook friends) reflections of significant real-world events, in the sense that they are often a nonhuman promise to pursue future friendship in the physical world that is made real through its broadcast on the network? What does this mean for real-world meetings that don’t cumulate in “friending”? What happens to the structure of real-world friendship if the promise of friendship that was broadcasted is never followed through? What does “defriending” mean? What does defriending do to networks?&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Habits of Living Thinkathon — Day 4 Live Blog: Namita A Malhotra on Amateur Pornography </title>

        &lt;b&gt;The Habits of Living Thinkathon (Thinking Marathon) is being hosted by the Centre for Internet and Society in Bangalore, India, from September 26 to 29, 2012. The event brings together a range of multi-disciplinary scholars and practitioners. The aim of the workshop is to generate a dialogue on the notion of surrogate structures that have become visible landmarks of contemporary life, and to produce new conceptual frameworks to help us understand networks and the ways in which they inform our everyday practice and thought. &lt;/b&gt;
        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;We found &lt;b&gt;Namita Malhotra&lt;/b&gt;’s presentation on amateur video porn to be particularly stimulating. However, she begins her discussion not with porn but with the Sumeet Mixie, the first mixie made for Indian food. At the time that the Sumeet Mixie had its heyday, it was largely inaccessible to most Indians, even those in the mid-level middle class. The mixie, Namita claimed, was a representation of a crisis of the middle class in India in the 1980s, a representation of the progress that was promised to them through Nehru’s development programs that was still largely out of reach for the average Indian. Namita draws parallels between a picture of her father, a young engineer, with Nehru and the famous picture of Nehru with the Santhali tribal girl, who, at some point after the famous shot of her inaugurating a dam, placed a garland around Nehru and was subsequently ostracized from her village on the grounds that she had become married to him. Namita’s father’s life was also heavily influenced by Nehru and his call for engineers, as he was pressured to become an engineer when he had little interest in doing so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Both the lives of her father and the Santhali girl were changed by the actions that they were asked to perform for the good of the country. Indians across the country were pushed to change their life, their dreams, and their habits in return for progress, for development, especially that of the Western kind. The reward was liberalization and a move towards consumerism, a duty that was placed upon the middle class as an activity of their earned progression but remained largely impossible. This struggle between the expectation to consume as a function of their hard-earned middle class status and their inability to do so was just one of many crises of the 1980s Indian middle class. Namita describes this period using two iconic phrases: “Life was hard and slow” and “a long afternoon of underdevelopment.”&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Moving on from discussions of Nehru and the middle class, Namita presents to us her work, jointly titled: Nehru’s Technologically Enabled Future or It Could Be Me. She enters into the discussion of amateur porn in India by showing us a 2-3 minutes video clip of the women’s section of a bus. The women are standing or sitting, and their activity barely changes over the period of the video. The eroticism, she suggests, could be in the suggestion of activities that could take place. It is the seemingly non-erotic images in India that have become some of the most defining features of amateur porn in India, both currently and in the past.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;In past decades, the consumption of porn largely took place in communal male spaces. However, the event of a somewhat non-erotic clip of a teenage couple negotiating the terms of oral sex being auctioned on a website led to what Namita calls a “moment of sexual eureka”: the realization that amateur clips could be shared online. This led to a flood of amateur porn being circulated and shared through online networks. This eventually prompted a response from the state, though the response was largely one of confusion towards who or what was really responsible—the individual, the network or the technology? The state, of course, is not afraid of the content of the clips but the networks and connections that they cannot see nor trace.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Namita then moves on to a discussion of content of much amateur Indian porn. Much of the media that is created and consumed on mobile phones is grainy and low resolution, and even higher-resolution image clips tend to be highly un-staged with little to no focus on performance. There is a creation of anonymity through the way many clips are filmed, with one participant holding the camera and focuses being placed on body parts instead of faces. Where, then, does the eroticism come from? Namita argues that the familiarity and ability to relate and be present as a viewer in these amateur videos creates its own eroticism. The same can be said about the realness of videos whose purpose is not performance of sexual acts by ideal bodies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;This creation of eroticism indicates possible discussion of surrogacy. Erotica stands in for sex, masturbation stands in for sex, etc. Surrogacy may be useful in completing this conversation about eroticism and Indian amateur porn.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Participants were unsure about the connection between Nehru’s paradigms and amateur porn, and felt that it needed a bit more fleshing out.  Discussion then moved towards ideas of transgressive epistemologies, and whether or not the culture and networks situated around amateur porn where sites of transgressive practices. There was debate around what the purpose of the transgression is—recovering ground in visual culture? Gaining control over one’s corporeality? Ultimately, Namita was wary of invoking a transgressive framework around these cultures, and put forth pleasure as a more interesting and useful frame, as there is always a sexual layer involved. She felt that a transfessive framework may be limiting in the exploration of these cultures.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Habits of Living Thinkathon — Day 3 Live Blog: Rijuta Mehta on Militant Hindu Nationalist Networks </title>

        &lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;&lt;b&gt;Rijuta Mehta&lt;/b&gt; talked to us today about networks of Hindu militant nationalism, which she has termed “Hindutva” networks. Through her back in cultural media studies, she has become interested in the creation and existence of non-citizens as well as the interaction between the state and the stateless person. Using the larger framework of non-citizenship and the media, Rijuta has been trying to make sense of the militant Hindutva movements that are abound in India.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Rijuta argues that a good way of understanding these movements is by using a network framework, particularly one that recognizes the integral part that is played by interaction between the various networks and that these networks are characterized by the politics of non-citizenship—that is, those that are excluded from the Hindutva networks are non-citizens. Mehta asks us: What is the form of these networks, and what do they have to do with the persecution of non-citizens in India? To what extent does Hindutva make the form of the network visible in political society and political violence? How do networks of dispossession and externalism give and take form? What is the form of the Hindutva network(s)?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;To help answer some of these questions, Mehta walks us through a brief history of the growth of Hindutva groups in India, and describes to us how their characterization has changed over time. Hindutva has moved from being a collection of networks of those who identify as Hindu to a multilevel movement known for its violence against Muslims and those it views as non-citizens. The Hindutva organization is characterized by many branches of networks, which has allowed for the expression of many different beliefs and ideologies within the overarching framework of Hindutva. However, though the networks may appear to be decentralized, the groups are still dependent on a hierarchal stratification of central nodes of power. This complex structure of authority allows for niches for petty/local sovereigns.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Mehta points out at this point that the public often sees networks as being emancipatory, but in the example of the Hindutva, this has to be questioned. We should expect to see networks being created in instances of mediated rule and patron-clientalism, both of which lead to the structure of civil society being characterized by the creation of multiple networks centralized around middlemen. Networked associations such as these tend to enable higher incidences of violence, and can even lead to long-term entrenched violence. Consequently, networks should not be seen as being ultimately emancipatory, as they can be the cause of more established structures of oppression.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Participants were quick to discuss the use of the word “Hindutva” when describing these networks. It was pointed out that in a Supreme Court of India ruling, Hindutva was defined as “the way of life of the Indian people and the Indian culture or ethos,” and that Hindutva could encompass any type of Hinduism. Discussion arose over whether or not there are non-problematic Hindutva networks. Many participants argued that though Hindutva is now associated with the militant right-wing, it may still be incorrect to called the violent or aggressive Hindu nationalist movement Hindutva because the borders between the militant Hindutva networks and various other non-militant or even non-nationalistic Hindu networks are not clear.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;Bringing it back to habits and living, discussions were brought up about the similarities between Hinduism as a lifestyle, as being part or a guiding structure to habits and living, and Christianity as a lifestyle. In many places in the USA, many people who are not orthodoxly religious still perform religious activities simply because it is part of their habit and lifestyles, and those practices are so deeply engrained into the culture and everyday life of those Americans. This is where the term Hindutva becomes problematic as simply a term to describe militant nationalist networks, as Hindutva can also be seen as a structure of everyday life for many Indians.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: justify; "&gt;I thought the discussion about the use of the term Hindutva was very important, as the use of an all-encompassing term with unclear boundaries can vilify groups or individuals who do not identify with the popular understanding of Hindutva as a militant nationalist group. I also thought that the point about mediated rule and patron-clientalism is a highly interesting avenue for the research of networks and how network structures interact with the state and the political sphere, as they can influence both the development of a legitimate political regime as well as the creation of citizen and non-citizen identities.&lt;/p&gt;
